And rightly so...
But I'm not hearing a call for balance.
What I'm hearing is a call for a one-dimensional music genre.
I'm striving for balance.
Striving for the inclusion of artists with more positive images.[/quote:c66e019e07]
Then. . . .. . . . . all of us could start with becoming the change WE want to see.
network, network, network with everybody everywhere all the time. let the lines in the dirt blur more.
invite hardcore artists to share the same bill, do collaborations, shop and sell beats, buy and rhyme over beats. all locally, of course.
nationally, I already see signs that if not the labels, at least the artists are reaching out to bridge this canyon between the two, in fact, artists of all genres are doing more collaborating.
some of this is a backlash against the homogenized Radio Control and some is just good business sense. Artists realize, THE PEOPLE, if taxed or stressed by the politics of music too much, will take their tiny available cash and go bowl, fish, scrapbook, or something less stressful. After all, to the public, its entertainment first. and is more likely the results without the politics and fighting.[/quote:c66e019e07]
The idea of networking and blending all styles is of course a very good idea, but it has to be done correctly. Every style or even every artist doesnt necessarily compliment one another. And most importantly, where I think the topic really stems from is some people are so single minded that they refuse to even appreciate other aspects of Hip Hop. Every one is different, that's what makes the music great, but to me its a problem when every thing on the radio is all the same. That is in no way the true form of the art. There is one formula the industry has and wants, and will not stray from. So its not just backpackers, its for all artist that are narrow minded. There's some gems out there that dont do it like you do!!! feel me

It seems to me that there are a lot of educated and talented people in the area, and by the discussion this forum grew into there are a lot right here. A few of you probably know each other, heard of each other, and maybe have worked with a few of the artist on this forum before, but how close is the underground scene in KC, Lawrence, Topeka, or any of the surrounding areas? Nobody has to like every artist they come in contact with, and it would be foolish to think so, but I believe most independent/underground artist should have a mutual respect for one another and stop backstabbing each other. Im originally from Michigan and the underground scene in the Ann Arbor/Detroit area is more inclusive of artist of all types. True it may be about who you know or who you cool with, but if you doing it, outside like me selling cd's in the damn winter, you get respect for that, cause its hard fa sho.
I cant really say I have a battle plan to lay out or a strategy to attack the music scene in the surrounding areas, but I do think there are enough artist involved here to start changing things if they wanted. For instance mixed shows, by that I mean different type of artist performing, yep break up the CLICK attitude. Not just open mic nights, but organized shows that expose the fans of our music to multiple individuals. Build a core of individuals that are looking to expose everybody cause there are by far too many people going unheard. Think of all the cross marketing and promoting everyone would benefit from. Time to make the scene as a whole blow!!!! Another suggestion put together mixtapes of artist in the area and put it on the streets. Of course all that wish to be involved would have to contribute to the cost of manufacturing it....then give it to the streets free. One to three free disc with a gang of artist on it will let the people know who's out there doing what, and who to look for. How many people on here actually record tracks? Get every artist to put in $10, pick the best track from each artist......Underground Mixtape Vol 1-??? Would be done in no time at all, pressed up and ready to go.
I may be optimistic about a unified music scene, but it would do more good than harm for all artist as a whole. Im not saying open your doors and arms blindly to any and everybody, cause there are some strange acting cats out there that cant be trusted. I just want to see more shows where nobody gets shot, hear more music from good local artist that are on the grind, and make moves for the Midwest. I got a ton more thoughts about the whole idea that would bore some of you to death, so I’m going to end it here.
You got ideas? Post that. I want to know what other artist think and since we all not in a room together (which also should happen one day) put your ideas in writing here.

I'd like all these scenes to be closer, I know that artists from these cities post here. I'd be open to suggestion for how the site mightconnect and represent our sister cities from colorado kansas border to missouri illinois border. anybody with insights could talk about it the Building a Network Thread.

I agree with you on that, but it ain't me that is challenged by the exsistence of another artist. the one thing I feel for sure tho is Big Me even BIGGER US mind set would go further to make this whole region jump out the center of the country. Not just missouri and kansas artists but the entire region blowin on it own terms makes the future more secure for those who are ready to blow with it. hell even make it better for several generations of artists to come if we work it right. yes I have thoughts on that too!
Im originally from Michigan and the underground scene in the Ann Arbor/Detroit area is more inclusive of artist of all types. First off, Welcome to KC RIP. Second, sounds like in michigan artists have been able to move their consciouness to a larger more encompassing vision. I haven't seen that as often around here until lately.
for a great feel of what it has been like read "A Rose" article for the back story. I feel if this area doesn't move towards a unifed effort, it could miss the boat again in terms of how this region is perceived by everyone outside of it. the fits and start, piecemeal approach has not work for us yet. Frankly I think everyone outside the midwest is like damn, the got their shit together yet?

Hell you know me if there's something I always got is at least a skeleton battle plan rumbling around in my beedy brain. Problem for me is I'm not an artists in terms of any of the elements ( which is currently how i am defining Being Hiphop, so I hesitate to pontificate (yeah right) but I'm one hellava supporter and a vocal one at that.

this has happened and I think is and will be happening more. Partly because there is starting to be that group of folks who unbeknown to each other becoming bridges and connectors into many of the clicks that exsist in the kansas missouri scene. I am a fan of cross pollunation myself.
[quote:8036388fa2] Build a core of individuals that are looking to expose everybody cause there are by far too many people going unheard. Think of all the cross marketing and promoting everyone would benefit from. Time to make the scene as a whole blow!!!! [/quote:8036388fa2]

as I mentioned before I see signs of this beginning, what is not so clear is whether these "early adapters" of this Big Me even BIGGER US idea are all talking to each other, want to talk to, need to talk to each other and mostly if that matters right now. most important is that lots more folks are aware of each other.

Join the optimistic club. What keeps coming up for me is one word "TIMING". historically, changes of the group consciousness kind are amazing to watch and difficult to predict. Read the book "Tipping Point " for some on the real shit about group change. I have such a hope for so much from this area (kansas and missouri) stl is not missouri there is so much more to hear from just as lawrence is not kansas there is so much more to hear. of course, I have some notions about how but thats what they are notions and I am sure there are others out there with notions as well. Time will be the bearer of change. this is not the first time there has been such a pool to amazing talent in this area, witness that time was the factor in those instances as it is now.

I agree with that to. Maybe first we should have a meeting of the hiphop artist and see if we can bring shit together ourselves first. If we can schedule a second meeting then we should open it to any independent artist regardless of genre. I myself need to collab with a rock band, so its all good with me.

I'm starting to think this is overly idealistic.
This notion of being unified.
Too many egos and attitudes at the table.
Belief dictates behavior so...
Until we can change the way people think we can't change the way they act.
Many of us are for a unified front.
Some of us could care less.
You know what side I stand on.
We've had this discussion a number of times.
Trying to unify at times can be taxing.

There's nothing wrong with wanting a unified scene.
It's just at times it feels like asking for world peace.
I think many of us have it at heart. And are working in our own quiet ways to make it happen. Whether or not it will remains to be seen.

Not to speak for NRG, but I'm pretty sure she believes we need a unified MUSIC scene (all genres included) as well.
I remember talking with her about that too...
- Apr 4, 2006 07:26pm by phism
i think part of unity is allowing things to diversify. part of the problem with hip-hop i think is the reluctance to split genres. we had backpackers trying to do it a few years ago, now we've got crunk, and we kind of have to face the fact that most hip-hop these days isn't really actually hip-hop, if you compare it to what hip-hop was for the first 10 or 15 years (the majority) of it's existence.
i don't know if anyone's paid attention, but i think i've mentioned on here before that i'm trying to start an all ages non-profit venue, which would 1) get young people involved, which i think is a major problem with the hip-hop scene here.. 2) have a lot of mixed genre shows so all the hip-hop heads, punks, skinheads, rudies, hardcore kids, and whoever can get to know each other...

The scene is truly nothing more than a mirror image of our community.
We don't really commune as regular everyday people.
So much of what needs to be fixed exists on a higher plane than just the music. We gotta start there.
Kansas City, as a whole, can be quite segregated and divided.
Sure, I think Hip Hop can hold the key for the community at large, but we need to address the big picture in the process of organizing.

Until the majority of thought realizes/accepts that although KC is a small pond, there's enough for everyone to share. Reach can have just as much access to the fanbase of "Get Up Kids as Get up Kids" have to "Tech N9ne's." Once we move past "It's mine, not yours: The City Divided by North, South, East, West, Suburb/Hood/Block, Mo/Ks, Genre, and Race." It could be a beautiful thing. if it has to start with musicians, so be it. But it has to start somewhere.
Remember what OutKast asked, "Is everybody with dreds for the cause?"
Meaning, just because you're a member of HHKC doesn't make you less wolf in sheep's clothing.

As a whole its the ME ME ME, ALL MINE attitude that prevents rappers or any other arrogant artist from seeing past their own world. To be a good artist you have to be a little arrogant, we all have moments when we declare ourselves the best in the world, I know I do. I agree with an ealier statement above, if a change has to start with musicians/artist then thats where it should start.

been kinda out of it today so just read this thread and I wanna speak for myself by saying, I love music, I am HipHop, You ( hiphop) are the community I choose to invest my love, care and concern in, I believe that hiphop culture is a culture that offers the best hope right now for a World community and the beginings of peace.
here is the trick though:
We have to live hiphop everyday everywhere we go. I believe that if we are willing to continuously put our best efforts into self expression through the elements and whatever imaginative explorations of the elements as we experiment and grow, We will be leading by example what it means to have hope for the future of, self love (not egotisical selfishness) and others, (community meaning our family, friends fellow hiphoppas).
Currently, I feel that other genres in the city have a head start on the hiphop community in that they are better networked and work togther move, but we are more of international community in the making because of hiphop being founded on excellence of self expression and the use of this self expression as a form of communicating beyond any limitations.
if we can just begin to release the need to LABLE things real hiphop or not down, and in its place talk more about what each individual feels is real, I think all of us may find, that there are some foundational ideas that are hiphop no matter how they are being expressed.
if we can rally around these foundational ideas instead of labels, hiphop might become the best example of comiing together currently available.
as to all the ills of our society and needing to take them on, yes we must WAKE UP to these things and at the same time of beginning to address them, we must continue our most excellent self expression, include commentary if it feels appropriate, but not allow these societal ills to over take our hopeful vision.
stop resisting your happiness, be glad to be with, encourage, and aide each other while at the same time sharing hiphop culture and yourself freely with those not in the culture but who are curious about it. don't be a secret about your enjoyment.

Here's A Dope Quote I Found That A Feel Relates To Some Stuff Said In This Discussion
"In my own case, I Have constantly been asked whether I am British, or Indian. The formulation "Indian-born British writer" has been invented to explain me. But, as I said last night, my new book deals with Pakistan. So what now? "British-resident Indo-Pakistani writer"? You see the folly of trying to contain writers inside passports." - Salmon Rushidie
I think the same can go as putting rappers in sub-genres, Why can't it just be Hip-Hop???

to phism, unity does not mean comformity, that's the old school way of seeing unity "melting pot" vs the more diversity driven image of " a garden with many different species of flowers coexsisting" of course
the garden= hiphop culture and many different species= diversity of sound, words, images, etc in hiphop culture.
Personally, I believe hiphop culture is capable of handling everything creatively, expressively, we can throw at it.
hiphop is stronger smarter and broader than any culture before it. Hiphop actually asks for less comformity than any culture before it

The only way to teach someone a new appreciation for a new style of art is to expose them to it. However, uncomfortable, and unsatisfied they are with it. Constant exposure to certain things will lead to one of two things... Appreciation... or tolerance... Both of which is why mainstream media can get away with playing the same songs over and over again.
Being an outsider I know very little about KC's scene and the way that it functions, so I simply state Iowa experiences, and hope there is some relevance.
In order for change to occure, the fear of failure must be destroyed. Because if you realy desire that change, failure is not an option. A lot of artists in town here are scared to meld styles, genres etc for shows because of how it would reflect on their reputation. someone will have to be the martyr in order for this type of change to take place.
My opinions.. if they mean anything... I don't have any real answers... just offereing another perspective.

Just got back from what turned out to be a very fruitful discussion. For those that did not make it for whatever reason you missed out on an open forum discussion for change and how to bring about that change.
As a whole I feel that the ideas that were discussed are key to the ground work that needs to be done in order for all of us to be successful. One key topic "GOOD MUSIC" as being relative, which it clearly is. You all as an 'artist' know what is good music regardless if it is something you genereally do, speak, or live. That term good music would apply to all genres and not just the genre of hip hop that we all say we love. My problem with individuals is the CRAB mentality that seems to be dominant in this area. As I stated before I am originally from Michigan, and was part of an underground scene in the Ann Arbor/Detroit area that was by far more open and more inclusive of any hiphop artist that was out on the streets grinding, trying to make moves, trying to make things happen. Its seems to me the Topeka area has quite a few artist that dont want to see anyone make it period,...this crab mentality is detrimental to the art and it will kill the independent music scene as a whole. I got from the meeting today that there are artist out there that are willing to look past their all mighty EGO and build something that could eventually feed you, your family, your friends, and your generations to come. My only problem was that I didnt see them there today. I am stilll looking forward to meeting some of you artist and hopefully we will get to do this again soon.
There may be a battle plan that is in the works to help the Midwest finally reach its dominant position in the music game. I myself would love to be a part of that movement. So as long as moves are being made RIP will be there and put in the work thats needed.

Yeah, it was a good discussion. I'd like to see it more organized in terms of content. The main subject at hand was "how to pull power from major labels and put it back where it belongs, into the artist". I don't think talking is really gonna do much, if we really wanna make a difference we need to get out and about locally and start organizing here. The key to a strong base is gonna be a strong network where everyone communicates and participates. It's easy to talk loud and say nothing, it's fullfilling to watch your efforts actually grow.

I second both RIP and JDFLOW it was a good discussion. I too am anxious for action and doing something about community relations locally.
There was some discussion about trading shows along I-70 for the purpose of getting in touch with all the heads and artists from western kansas to st. louis.
I hear folk mention all the time contacts they know throughout these two states but alas what has been missing is a plan of ACTION to actual organize even these contact into a operating movement.
I would be glad to gather this information and help with setting up shows for artists who want to trade shows and build stateswide.
as far as I can see, the hesitation is sharing the contacts, making the phone calls and putting that in writing so many people at the same time can get ready to DO the PLAN.
on another note it was great to meet up with RIP face to face and hear his story and meet his protege` Brail. We all wanted there to more folks there than the four of us, but we are confident more will come will we get organized with a plan of ACTION.
this reminds me that we are in the "show me state" and that most skeptics are waiting to see what happens before they decide whether they will become involved. it is what it is in this regard.
I hope that if you have a contact, venue, radio, record store, you will share the info so we can begin to get this vision into an action plan.
peace
