Topic: How to Approach a Dj About Spins
- Mar 21, 2006 09:11pm by DjShad
Hello Everyone,
I just wanted to talk about this subject because I feel it needs to be discussed. Many artists wonder about getting played in the club and how to go about it. I’m just going to inform you that running up on us during the prime time of the night saying i'm the hottest rapper is not going to get you play. If you come to me saying that and your breath is hot, then the immediate reaction would be hell no. Put yourself in my situation, your spitting a hot 16 in the studio and your feeling it and I run up to you saying you dog check this mix out. You have just ruined the session, the engineer would be pissed and you are going be pissed because that is blown money for the studio session. The best time to approach a dj is either at the beginning of the night or at the end. An even better approach is catching us out in the streets and giving us the product. Don't be offended if we say, let me take it home and listen to it. If a dj takes the time to listen to it and find a way to work it in the mix that it’s a wonderful thing. If not, we can work with you and find a way you can fit in the program, it might be something as little as mastering or maybe cutting a 6-minute song with everyone and their mother and cousin from the Southside to a tighter 3-minute song. If you think about it, we have to format out music for the clientele that we are working with in the club. If you have the hottest street record and we are dealing with a crossover demo, then the song probably will not work and if it clears the floor then maybe, its time for another song. I will speak on it more later
Peace

Sounds fair....I know I wouldn't run up to someone in the middle of their set and say....play this shit man, it's hot. That's kind of silly, but I'm sure it happens fairly often.

You have no idea....
Especially on the more gangster side of the hiphop spectrum.
Whats even worse is when you are in the middle of a set and this happens and the dude and his crew get all insulted b/c you don't drop his shit in your set and then trys to start a fight with you after you are done. Thats REAL fun.
Seriously though...what the fuck kinda dj is just going to play some shit they have never heard before from an artist they have never heard of? Thats just idiotic. Unless its Pharrell or someone I'm not playing it until I get to listen to it outside the club.

Yah, I've dealt with that too, people getting mad because I wont play it and threaten me. Ive told them like this beat me up and you'll never make it in the industry, you don't know who i know and its more than just kansas city. Ive seen it happen when an artist threaten a dj, the dj's boys usually take the guy out back and handle him. I've experienced it the worst in this market. Its sad when various artists go to other markets, i've seen them get treated bad because they think they can get away with things here and it would fly in other markers. I'm like this, ive played in clubs with producers and artists who have sold alot of records and i dont mean double wood and they don't rush the dj's to play their stuff. Let the truth be told, they(artists and producers) establish relationships outside of the club setting like hanging out with the dj's and networking with them. Its more to life than getting played in the club.
Some of the classic sayings include,
"I'm the hottest rapper in Kc" yadda yadda yadda there is a world outside of kc, maybe you should explore it
"You ain't Dj _____ he plays my stuff," well I don't care if he did, you still dont have a record deal
"The streets are feeling me" come on dog, just because your block is feeling it which most of the block are your boys, that doesnt mean anything.
"My cd is at _________(aka your favorite store)," well do you have a barcode
"I have a mixtape."everyone and their mother has a mixtape now
"let me freestyle in your ear" i got a wife and i don't go that way pimpin
"cuz, you don't know who I am." no and i have people in the streets who tell me whats hot.
"Come on, by my cd and play it"I havent had to buy a cd(unless I like the artist or to show support), and you want me to pay for it and play it. If you can give your boys a copy then i can get one.
I will speak more later..
comments questions. feel free to post them

The main problem with that is the old bossman. Most people don't want to hear local artists.....they want to hear the same old crap that plays over and over again on the radio, or at least a remix of that. People interested in local talent can see it live.....I can understand why most club owners would steer clear of that.

radio hip hop=money
clubs=money
im willing to participate in a local listening section, but the hard part its getting the various club dj's to support the artists because different dj's have different agenda to play locals. im willing to work with cats and give them advice about projects all people have to do is reach out to me. im one of the easiest cats to reach sometimes......

I couldn't have said all of this better Shad. I literally get about 5-8 cds per week. People randomly popping up saying...track 3 and track 5 are heat!!! We got a deal with such and such label so you better build with us now before we blow up nationwide. blah blah blah.

idea: is there a little place somewhere between downtown and 75th st that someone could build a monthly new talent set. like hype it as a dj listening party spin the music and the artist are there handing out the music just played to dj's that want it I mean all hiphop and all dj's too
maybe a bag of music from the set played.
y'all would have to spend money tho erbody would need to share snacks buy drinks something to make it work for the club to. ain't nuthin free no more.
so artist pay to get in cover (so yeah pay for the chance to be heard and dj's socialize with artists and each other in a chilled professional manner for a change. none of this STALKING SH*T wouldn't make me wanna play music smile
I know its hard to get heard and getting hard by the minute by all the sings I see.
maybe its time to make new paths, methods, connections since the OLD WAY IS RAPIDLY DYIN
anybody that feel this kind of movement like relaxed industry style
reason I said small is so its primarily about dj's and artists, a club being able to increase their income on a day that is normally slow or not profitable.
would ya do dj's?
would ya do artists?
or
suggest what you are willing to do to take the stalker out of the local hometown artists?
peace
nrg
ps nobody likes to be run up on that goes for me too, but in a scarcity situation ( nobody will play my shit) its gotta be straight street sometimes

another thing just came to me about this set.
the dj's attending need to be sincere in their intent to support the scene's growth by committing to play local music. Remember, until recently there was NO RADio Play so dj's maybe had the only available way to be heard outside performance and direct sales at performances. in this way, I think local artists are being held hostage by area dj's too hence the stalking
for this attitude to become real in our scene, I think it should be invitational for dj's. the ones who are commited to using the music in their sets ( not just collecting discs of local music, shit cost money$$) are the ones who are working to promote the growth of the scene. they don't pay to get in cuz they are guest of the artists so to speak. they artist pay to get in, so the club gets paid. its like the artists renting a space and hosting the event.
there could be a guest dj (local) each month there to spin local music and a special set of this music mixed for listening and fun hope this would keep it from being boring to the guest dj. and provide a showcase opportunity for them.

No, This local set would be for the Mc's and such who are trying to get their music more attention. I won't know what tracks to play so the artist would need to come up and say play track whatever. it won't be a party scene to expect because the hours would be in the late afternoon so that if an entertainment attorney would be around to talk about read before you sighn subjects or somebody might be looking for a better producer
or studio or have beats for sale or looking to build a new group of MC's.
So I should say it would be an industry workshop for local artist.
Hows that ?
