Anybody hear that Ray Barretto died. He was one of my fav's. I don't think I've played a set w/out dropping one of his tracks in a long time.
Ritmo Sombrosso and Soul Drummer are my two personal favorites. If I have my facts straight I believe that he was a gang lord in New York then went to jail for a bit. After he got out he went clean and turned around to become a musical king in my humble opinion.

Barretto Family Moves to Help Musicians
Feb 23 8:10 AM US/Eastern Email this story
NEW YORK
The family of Ray Barretto, the Grammy-winning Latin jazz percussionist who died last week at age 76, has started a foundation to help musicians without medical or life insurance.
Family, friends and fans gathered Wednesday at a wake for Barretto, who grew up in New York City and recorded with such musicians as Cannonball Adderley and Dizzy Gillespie. He also played in Tito Puente's band in the late 1950s.
Barretto's "El Watusi" was a hit single in 1963.
"My life ran parallel to his music," said one devotee, Hernan Zuniga, 74.
Barretto won a Grammy for best Tropical Latin performance in 1989 for the song "Ritmo en el Corazon" with Celia Cruz.
One of his sons, Ray Barretto Jr., said his father's ashes would be divided, and sprinkled partly in Puerto Rico and New York City.
The elder Barretto's body was expected to be flown to San Juan, Puerto Rico, Thursday for a public viewing on Friday.
