Thanks. Yeah, I started this project almost a year ago, but had to focus on some other things for a while. But now, this site is my main focus and I sincerely thank everyone who has given feedback thus far and has helped me during this final push to make the site public.
Sharpness and ease of navigation were among the top priorities, so I'm glad those were among your first impressions.

Thanks. It seemed to me that given the large size of the metro area of KC, the music scene seemed a little small in comparison, which might be because things are so spread out? I don't really know for sure, but we sure as hell know the hip hop scene isn't very big. I think that if things were cross-pollinated more, that if we reached out beyond all these niche sites for different genres, that more people would take an interest in local music.
I personally have always been extremely frustrated in looking for shows around here. It's like you have to go the pitch.com, maybe lawrence.com, hiphopkc, syde-show, then off to the venues websites like, therecordbar.com, riot room, etc. After about 10 different sites, I'm usually pretty over it.
That's why I'm going to try the one-stop shop approach =)
You will be able to:
-find all events going on in any genre
-look at all events listed at any venue you want without having to go to every venue's website
-keep updated on anything you want easily through newsletters, rss feeds, calendar, twitter, etc.

Here's an example of what your events look like when you post them:
(Black Clover Beerfest this weekend)
http://www.kcmusicscene.com/calendar/events/index.php?com=detail&eID=171&month=09&year=2009
When you submit your shows, the site will promote the shit out of them through our newsletters, twitter, eventful, rss feeds, etc. And the venue information is already preloaded, along with google maps, and easy links for adding to your google calendar and iCalendar, as well as other popular services people use.......And all of this is automatically done for you!
(Basically, people won't have too many excuses for not getting the necessary information about your show)

hey dublow is your site live now? if so, how goes the posting? if no, how long before it is? looking forward to watching it take off. good work man
let's hope folks flock to it
ps have you read what JD flow was saying about how cool kc's entire arts scene is and that it has a need for a communications tool? what are the chances you could expand your site to include gallery openings, theatrical
plays, performance art ie burlesque and such + any other broader catagories that might cover the whole arts scene?
i'm just sayin I think that would be amazing if you could

Sure is. The site is 100% LIVE and ready to be consumed.
If you have events coming up....POST EM!!!:

I hope folks flock to it as well. I put in well, let's just say a "few" hours into it, and I would sure hate to see it sit there and not get used. Especially since I think it offers more features than just about any other local independent site in town.
As for the visual and performing arts, I wouldn't have a problem with integrating. I'm starting by focusing on music now because it's the biggest art scene in town, and what I'm most passionate about. If it proves to be successful, I would definitely be down to expand into those areas, or at least a completely dedicated site for them.

I would still love for more feedback. Like seriously, critique the hell out of it. I would love to answer anyone's questions, or get any new ideas. So far I've been able to implement just about every person's feature request that's made one.
I'm very curious to know people's likes/dislikes about it. Post them here, or privately. You can post them on the dedicated thread in the forum too:
http://kcmusicscene.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=11
In feedback I'm more concerned with functionality than aesthetics right now. Aesthetics is an easy change, and I think that will be constantly evolving and updating. But regardless, I want to hear it all. Really lemme know what you think!

how are you drivng folks to your site? I saw your request to list kcscene on folks networking pages. how's that going?
hopefully you have some money you can put towards stickers, something tangible, that was one of the problems I had and still have no money for those things
so hiphopkc has become known by word of mouth and mentions on others sites
I believe that happened becuz it offered a place where hiphop events and info could be found during that time, now time will tell what's next which is why I asked what your marketing approach beyond social networks is

As for online marketing, the big social networks are obviously a must. I'm building those now.
For promotional materials, I have plenty of funds tucked away in the sock drawer for all flyers and stickers and what not. I'm probably going to hold off on bombarding people/venues with those until the site gets a little more traffic. Doesn't make much sense to spend money to drive people to a site where a half a dozen events and people are using it right? But then again, you have to walk the line of how are people going to use it if they don't hear about it too right? I'm always open to suggestions.
Word of mouth will obviously play a huge role. I'm very proud that the site offers all the features of a larger corporate site, but it's 100% local and independent....there is no corporate media company overlooking its content, how it's ran, who's events get posted and who's don't. It is all grassroots, owned and operated by the people of kansas city. Everything is there that people here need, I guess it's ultimately up to them if they want to use it.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to better market the site, or anything they'd like to see in the marketing dept., my ears are always open for business.

ah the sock account hehehehehe good deal and of course you are welcome to continue to use hiphopkc.com as a way to promote and grow your site. when you're ready, I can send out a email blast promoting it. yes I agree that investing in local, being locally owned and operated, and supporting local music in a grassroot diy style are all pluses. being a Free listing site may help also. it can sometimes be tricky indenitifying why people use what, but free is good. if you think you will need income from the site, look at third party marketing for generating income.
