Topic: Lots to do on Thursday nights now (discuss!)

Ace said in another thread that he thinks hip hop is starting to take hold in kc. And I've heard before that a lot of bar/club owners outside P&L are starting to host hip hop nights simply due to the fact that P&L doesn't. I think this is starting to make a lot of sense to me now - When Ataxic begins his hip hop night at the peanut on thursdays, you will have FOUR - yes FOUR - hip hop weeklies that take place all on THURSDAY nights in KC. 1. Ataxic at the Peanut downtown. 2. Beatbroker at Darkhorse Tavern in Westport, 3. DJ Shad at Karma in Westport (within walking distance from Darkhorse) 4. eMC at The Newsroom in Midtown. This night inparticular is pretty cool, IMO. They're doing a lot of weird hip hop mashups and regular hip hop songs, but they play old school stuff and stay current at the same time. I heard a track off the new Evidence EP while I was there last Thurs. and "Swagger Like Us," which was a crowd favorite. See you there(s)!

it also just occurred to me that there's three dope events going on this saturday also - middleground bboy battle, reach's bday bash, and Black Milk. Basically - Get the ufck out of your house! PEACE

I was just gonna post about this..I think it is stupid!!!! All Eggs in ONE basket..... Why are all these similar styled nights on Thursday?? 6 other days possible!!! KC Hip Hop destined to fail.....?? Please find another night people!!! Might as well hunt for a spot myself since the week is open. I can button push with the best of them HAHAHA I forgot about all the shows on the 21st.... seems like the Emcees vs B-Boys........do I sense a divide? lack of respect for each other? I never see us together at shows anymore. Pretty lame in my opinion. Communication is key. competition is good but sometimes it is just self-defeating. ish talked about above comes to mind What It IZ???

Nobody's competing for business on Thurs. here. Darkhorse is invested in me for the long haul either way and I'm in no way attempting to draw a strictly hiphop crowd. Come if you want, don't otherwise. I'm just doing what i want to do. I'm not vying specifically for the attention of the HHKC crowd though I'm happy to see any you walk through the door. I think I can say the same for Shad. If any of you would ever come out of your homes on Mon-Wed. believe me I'd be filling those nights up with activities. So far (for over 5 years) I've been let down whenever I try. Hell, Sundays don't even work anymore, though we're examining new late-night venues for that as well. (Dream Twinkies anyone?) For the record. I've been advertising the 21st publicly for Blackmilk WAY longer than the other said events. I never schedule shows on a conflicting night for such a tiny demographic if I know the other event is going on. I do agree that communication is key when it comes to successful one-off events and this Saturday could suffer on all sides as a result of the lack thereof. I can only hope that those in attendance at Reach's show will make the trek over to Record Bar afterwards. If not, Im probably going to lose my ass which could equal no Guilty Simpson or Elzhi shows. ...fingers crossed.

man drew, i agree with you. All of us have different sounds and really we are all not trying to compete with each other. Honestly u can hear all spectrums of hip hop in one night. This is not an overnight sensation because of the p&l. I've been grinding hip hop hard in westport for the past 2 years on saturday nights @ karma and on thursday nights for the past 6 months. I understand its a recession, but if u want to explore all avenues from commercial,to underground to funk and soul and experimentation i welcome you out. Finally, because of all of these different nights, the hip hop listener can bar hop and hear all forums on thursday. this city has never really had options on one night to go bar hopping. I've seen it work in other major cities and it can be successful here. If I didn't have to be at my spot early I would check out beatbroker, attaxic, and the newsroom. If u want to do something on other nights, you are more than welcome to do it. The weekend works best for me because I work a 9 to 5, then after that come home and work on radio mixes for 5 different radio stations, working on consulting artists and placing producers on major label projects so its no rest for the weary.

i had been trying to get a thursday night thing for myself but i just got my days off changed to friday and saturday, thank crap, so we'll see what happens. and i don't ever have to get up early so i drink too much anywhere.

from an "out of towner" perspective it makes it more convenient for me to an extent. instead of trying to decide which events are worth my gas tank, i can hit multiple spots ona Thursday and build with everybody. then the next week i can hit Nara and Firefly ona Friday. who's to say all these events will stay afloat for the long run anyway. there's been plenty of events that have fizzled or outgrown themselves over time. i think everybodys looking for it to be like the 'old days' at The Peanut every Sunday. those days are over.

*Walks in with a blue cup of Kool-Aid in hand* I think having diversity on those nights can be both good and bad. Time will tell which. Or if such an assessment is even necessary. And for the record, since it came up... My birthday bash was booked at Mike's prior to it ever being posted here at HipHopKC. I had no foreknowledge of the BM show. NONE. It was brought to my attention after the fact... And I scrambled to mitigate the damage it could cause almost immediately after I got off the phone with Milkdrop. I wanted to reschedule the date, but that would've all but wiped away the "theme" of the night and it would also have meant the loss of sponsorship dollars I had previously secured. I wasn't out to step on anyone's toes. Truth be told, if anyone stands to lose...it's me. I did though, consciously, move the show up 3 hours so that it wouldn't have to compete with the Black Milk show. I've advertised it as such from the outset. I didn't want to make it seem like I was undercutting another promoter. Not my style.

[quote:c8b4fa52ba="Les...Izmore"]I was just gonna post about this..I think it is stupid!!!! All Eggs in ONE basket..... i feel u on this...although i wouldnt say stupid i would say overkill. i can only offer what i think a reason for sum of these may be...thurs is in itself almost like a fri in the sense that u only got one day b4 the weekend. so i think not jus the hiphop spots but alot of clubs go for sum sort of special music, drinks etc on thurs. Why are all these similar styled nights on Thursday?? 6 other days possible!!! i'm workin right now on a possible tues/wed hiphop nite i guess you'll be one of the first thru the door... KC Hip Hop destined to fail.....?? not for nothin but thats a wack ass statement/question 🙄 🙄 ...u answered it in another post...how can it be destined to fail when there 4 hiphop or sumwhat hiphop nites in one 😯 😯 ?? , not to mention all the things /shows before. Please find another night people!!! like i said i'll can count on seeing u in the coming weeks on a tues/wed 😉 Might as well hunt for a spot myself since the week is open. this is EMC on Seph's account I started the night originally as just a going away party for the bartender at Newsroom, and it began to grow as more people liked what we played. Women danced, breakers would come up and get down and emcees wanted to spit. So I kept doin the shit cause there was not any HIP-HOP outlets around for a while. I started this six months ago and Only cats I really see there are the heads that mostly want to hear New, old, local, underground, main, and in between music. It is strange how everyone started doing Thursdays, but no offense to the man Beatbroker. I know the drill with Darkhorse, but my night is just an outlet for fun again to kill the mundane spirit that lurks around these parts to bore people. I'm not the sickest DJ but I spin what I and other people like to bump. So come and kick it competition is none. The Dayshift single release is March 2nd at riot room Sephiroth's album release is May 22nd Gemini Drinking Party at riot room The official Dayshift album should be out sometime before summer Vert and Seph should have a EP out pretty soon 09 is the year for Sleepy Brothel -EMC

Not to mention, birthdays aren't able to be re-scheduled. I'm just a little worried now about my investment. I'm bringing shows through town not just because I want to, but also because I have to make a living It was my uneasiness speaking in the last post. With such a small pool of people in such uncertain financial times I can't help but think about these things. If I can't fill rooms, I simply can't afford to do this. I appreciate you shifting the times around and I'm certain it will help. I just know how some people feel about paying for 2 events in one night. I hope all goes well for all of us this Sat. I never want to do anything that adversely affects fellow promoters. That's why I did everything I could to mitigate the damage. I also made it a point to cross-promote the BM show. I want nothing but for this to be a wildly successful show for you. I honestly wish I had known... I would never have intentionally booked the show on the same night. I think though if patrons are going to make an investment into a Hip Hop show on Saturday night... More than likely it will be the Black Milk show at The Record Bar. The other shows will be LUCKY to halve the Record Bar turnout (mind you, there's yet another live performance -- Freddie Grimes -- scheduled at the Mission Lounge if memory serves). Hopefully though everyone will walk away happy about how things shook out. Good luck, I hope the turnout far exceeds your expectation.
