Toon, Sike, Reach and I want to thank everyone who was involved and everyone who showed up for the battle. This will be a night to remember. Info Gates wins the emcee battle and Lenny D wins the beat battle. Awesome evening people! Who has video? Post it up here! Versus 3 next January. The prize money will be insane next time! Thank you all! BTW, who would like to see a DJ battle in June? -Vrt

Dude, the turn out was crazy! Honestly, the first round was the best. I was rolling on the floor for the EMC/Sco matchup. Fucking hysterical. The night did not go any way that I could have predicted though. I was pretty surprised for a lot of it.

I still think i was underestimated. I only say that because of the feedback I was getting when it was all said and done. Since we love bring Turntables to a Beat battle, I'm going to bring my laptop to a DJ battle. Ableton will get all up in that ass. I'll throw up my Beat repeater, flangers, and pan fx and have my whole 4 hour mix already to go. Is that cool? Work smarter, not harder, is the lesson I learned. And Yes not only was the emcee battle last year longer but the beats were more emcee friendlier and known, and the Wit and ryhme was alot more clever. The whole battle last year, was almost like the battle between, emc and scoes battle. That shit was the funniest. I might post the video after I edit it. Or you can get it for $3.00

It was horrible! So painful to watch. I don't doubt the beats were better, and you had a good time. But objectively, this year was a huge step up. I think this set up next year to be something real sick. As the jackpot grows, so will the event.

Congratulations to Info for taking this with such a tough field of emcees. He was steely and focused the entire night. Shouts to my dude for winning it all. I DEFINITELY wanna see the DJ Battle go down. Vert I'm down to help put that together. I've got some ideas for it even...

I do think you got sold short though ace. I was more impressed at your live freaking abilities than watching the other guys hit play. Same went for headfella last year. (where i believe your were among us hitting play.) [quote:1eb5620b1b="AceFadal"] And Yes not only was the emcee battle last year longer but the beats were more emcee friendlier and known, and the Wit and ryhme was alot more clever.[/quote:1eb5620b1b] What beats would have made it better Ace? Would you have liked to have heard "Tried By 12" 6 times? Or perhaps the whole Premier library? A few more Alchemist Beats? That stuff is played out in battles. And by emcee friendly, what you're trying to say is easy to rap and sound good to. That's not the point. Heaters aren't for battles. Stripped down boom bap beats that focus on the skill of the emcees at hand are what matter and are what were selected. That said, there wasn't one that i played that wasn't super well known. You're lucky they stayed in 4/4. I'd agree with Grassnasty that it seemed short, as I only got through a tiny fraction of what i hoped to use, but chalk that up to half of the rappers in the building choosing not to sign up. emcees that did sign up came a lot harder than last year though.

[/quote:363f23edd6] Nothing at all against you, B.Broker, I didn't look at it that way. I mean to say that emcees didn't seem prepared for "unfamiliar" beats. It is true, most battles get the same songs played. I was just saying that it seemed harder for emcees to focus or get it moving. I will agree that emcees came harder this year, just less wit.... No witty unpredictable (opinion), just like I've seen some of the emcees who got beat do better. I mean, I knew what (certain) emcees were going to say, especially if I've heard their craft before. Info won because he kept it original, suspicious, and unique. When I tell people who he beat, they are like "really?" It could also be that the battle last year was twice as long, so it seemed funnier. Guess you had to be there. Hopefully next year will come full circle. my opinion INFO....He was the Witty Unpredictable Talented all Natural Genius. PEACE! edit*** Thanks for the props Drew, thats all that I really wanted! Props from someone doing it! There is too much pride at home. It showed last night. Might have been a battle fo fun, but some true feelings came out in some versus....... no doubt. haha! The winner had the truest heart and showed the truest respect for the art of battling, shaking hands and acknowledging the others courage to try to step to him, this was all after he served them. I know little of [b:363f23edd6]Info[/b:363f23edd6], but I can say he kept the battle, true to the art. RESPECT!

yo props to info all day he earned his shit fair and square but lets all face it and some of u might agree and some of you may not but i have to say this but i don't think that mac should have told the crowd to boo the emcees because first off i seen the competition and it was fierce it was already pressure to have to go against one of the best rap crews in the city, one of the most gifted emcees(stik figa)and some of the most elite freestyle emcees(lucid, ben grim, info, acetone) and the last year's winner swayz, and for 500 dollars you have no friends because everyone i just named i consider a true friend that i can call on for anything, but when there's money on the line its fucking kill or be killed,so with that being said mac giving the crowd more power than they deserved was down right fucking outrageous, now don't get me wrong i love mac to death he is one of the city's best has to offer but when i thought he lost his damn mind when he said that the crowd can boo us,if we come off wack, say "faggot" or any other shit like that and i feel like honestly it was wrong because the crowd isn't in our shoes and a crowd is suppose to laugh,or cheer if they heard something that appealed and could relate to that would make us get more hyped and let us know that we had the crowd's support, but muthafuckas was booing at stupid shit, now i admit there were some shit that i would even boo at that nite but i still didn't now i did laugh my ass off when i heard the battles but i would never boo and thats not because they are my friends but that's just fucking wrong in so many ways, and as dope of an emcee as info is, if ben grim wasn't booed during his turn he would have probably ripped info a new one because i've seen what that dude can do when thrown into the lion's den and trust me it's not pretty he will tear your child's head off then serve it to your for dinner;now once again don't get me wrong info killed it all day but if we weren't getting booed on some stupid shit when instead of now we have to worry about not only going against our opponent right in front of us but now we have to not slip up and stumble and fumble a rhyme, which lets face it all of us have done because you are trying to say something witty, that rhymes, and also takes the other guy's fucking head off,but sometimes along the lines we will slip up and our words will spill right out of our heads because if we are that good that every round is crisp clear and on point without fucking up then that would clearly be a written verse, and thats some wack shit, now i'm not one for normally bitching about a loss but i honestly think this shit was unfair from jump because u don't limit an emcee right before he says what he has to,and you fa damn sure don't give the fucking crowd the right to boo you, because muthafuckas in the crowd don't do what we do,point blank period, the majority of the crowd was people that were fans of the art or just simply told by word of mouth or hell maybe only cuz they found out mac lethal was hosting either way,if u were in that crowd and you did boo me or any other emcees that nite, then i honestly feel sorry for you, because you alone didn't let us do our fucking jobs as we could have and you threw the whole genuine foundation of what a battle is right out a 40 story fucking building,so thank you, because of you i don't even wanna fucking participate next year...................

i think that Mac gave the crowd specific instructions bc alot of the heads in the crowd probably haven't seen a battle before or for awhile. So they wouldn't of known when to boo or not to boo. also, bc he wanted to challenge the emcees. he of all people around here knows what the expectations for a battle are from the crowd and the emcees. i equate it to playing in a big basketball game on the road, if you airball the crowd is gonna scream "aiiirrrrballll" on that shot and if they're a good crowd everytime you touch the ball after that. good shooters hit the next 4 shots and glare back at the crowd. the battles over, lets make some dope music now.
  21. Jan 25, 2009 04:21pm by Lucidialect
Dutch, I feel you. Mac was just setting the tone he's used to. We should be able to perform under scrutiny. We want to be recognized as professionals, gotta play the part. That said, I didn't enjoy getting booed myself. But in a battle our feelings aren't really what's important. I thought Grimm should have won his battle against Info. I thought Godemis damn near won against Info. But Info performed the best in that environment. In the end, he most deserved the win.
  22. Jan 25, 2009 07:44pm by dirge
Toon and I agree with a lot of what Dutch has to say. Emcees should be able to say whatever they want to. Faggot or your mama jokes included. At one point, a guy says "faggot" and get's booed and the next emcee says "you're gay" and doesn't get booed. Reach and I talked about this during the battle and we both felt like it should have not been left to interpretation. It won't be that way next year though. The booing is finished at this point (unless the emcee is so horrible that you can't help it..Retarded anyone). It was so bad at one point (I don't want to take anything away from Info's win with this) that I had to go up to people who were booing anyone that Info battled the moment that they started. It didn't matter what they said, they just started booing. Mac Lethal was the host and we let him run it like he wanted to so we support his decision. This is only the second year. Next year will be bigger and better. -Vrt

Do you think we can make the beat battle head to head like the emcee battle. And have second and third round elemination. Like first loser, of first battle, battles second loser of second battle. So on and so on.... And no more crowd votes for battles....I bet most of those people, like Dutch said, probably never seen a battle let alone a producer battle, some people didn't even know what I was doing, and had know Idea thats how beats are sometimes made...They also listen to the radio or Pop Hop. What do the "people" know about production? I want peers or emcees judging. Not someone who proly went outside and started bumping T-Pain, in the whip after the show. All of my friends said the beat battle, seemed more like a popularity contest. The winner was decided by who brought the most friends, and thought that nobody really listened, or kept track, after the first round. If you are already established as one of the best producers in the city, what else do you have to prove? Let the little people play. I also think that the winning producers beat should be played for the final emcee battle. If its good enough to win, it should stand up to vocals, right? Beat battles come far too few, so when they do it needs to be right. Battles should be based on creativity, originality, dopeness and style. In that aspect Barberic Merits shoulda won. Sky's the limit next year for both the producers and the emcees. I hope that everyone who was involved had a great time. Ace, I only had a chance to see the first round of the Beat Battle and I thought everyone brought it. Skill is not the question or else you wouldn't have been up there. Good job homie! The judging criteria will alter a bit by the next go round. Head to head is a good idea, time willing. We will see. We all did forget to say that Stik killed it! He had me cracking up! Once again, thank you to everyone who participated. It was a lovely evening. Lots of ups and downs, upsets and dopeness from (mostly) everybody. We appreciate your comments and will take them all into consideration when we start planning for next year. Here's what I would like to see; I'd like to see people take these ideas and put together events that would be compatible with Versus. All weekend people were asking for us to do it every six months. We're gonna stay at once a year but that doesn't mean that any of you can't put together your own events. I'd be willing to help. personally i liked the fact that the crowd was encouraged to boo if it was lame. suck my dick and faggot jokes aren't funny enough to win and it's always the kind of humor people fall back on when they can't think of something really clever. of course i understand how you feel dutch because there is no way i would be able to get up there and do that with or without booing, but i really do think the crowd should be more active and selective with what they hear. the crowd or fans shouldn't have to listen to everyone who wants to rap. accountability. don't be lame and you won't get boo'd. i do totally understand that it makes it more difficult for the artists, but it seemed to me that the booing and cheering were pretty equal. whatever it was fun, everyone did great! dutch, your energy was crazy..."IM A MONSTER" haha!

We both had a really good time, got to flex a little, and most importantly build our fan base up to about 43 now. Frankly, Lenny deserved the title cause he's like the Abbott of the beats and that second one he dropped would murder about anything out there......anywhere. Thanks to everyone who put the event together and dropping us the invite to get after it. Stay tuned for some footage, we were experiencing some technical difficulties earlier today but should have a little something something up to view very quick like.

I think a song battle would be dope. Emcees, djs, producers, all about the groups and the music they make. I don't know exactly how the format would work, but something like a battle of the bands, only hip hop. My $.02.

the booing fucked shit up a lil, but as an MC you should be able to cope. Now i am totally against limiting what an mc can or cannot say, thats just stupid. Everyone should get off their high horse... this was a battle, not an event to end the social ills of the world. The whole concept is about destroying your opponent anyway possible through words. Check the dopest battles you can think of... there are hints of biggotry, racism, homophobia etc... Its a battle and to be expected, it does not mean that the mc truly subscribes to those ideals. InfO served, please dont take away from his victory. He came the hardest...leave it at that. and for the record.. dutch, i booed you all night son!!

I actually had a sample of a shot gun cock in one of my songs. I practiced putting in one of the songs and was going to cock my thang and then and the end bust a shot at each producer. I felt it was inappropriate, not the sample, just the fact that I was going to do it with my middle finger. Some raw shit..... Some things should not happen. and Toon next time I see you Ima make sure I have some stick matches for them locks. ih8choo Now I don't know which to do first. I'm a little disappointed by the sour grapes being thrown about in this thread. Winning and losing gracefully is, in my view, very important to maintaining the integrity of events like these. I thought the battle itself was one of the most impressive since the Mic Miechanics battles of yesteryear. I did disagree with the battle being censored. Battles, by their very nature, trade insults. Furthermore, the culture that it sprung out of is as politically incorrect as anything in popular culture. It comprises, in part, some of the most graphic imagery and explosive language in our entire culture. Hip Hop CAN BE a hard pill to swallow, but take it as it is. I think the audience often took liberties with their right to boo and began to skew the original purpose for which it was bestowed upon them. Too much was left open to interpretation. I made the aforementioned observation about the discrepancy in the audience's discretion. I watched the audience boo one emcee for using the word "faggot". In the very same battle the other emcee smacked back with a charge of his opponent being "gay". In the latter instance the audience was suspiciously quiet. I think that's the problem that giving the audience license to boo creates. That's water under the bridge at this point, but I thought I'd share my opinion since we're on the subject. It's hard for me to expect artists to overcome that. Especially since that rule wasn't previously disclosed (that I'm aware) to the contestants. That said, Mac had his reasons and I respect them. I just happen to disagree. Shouts to Info for being so focused and unshaken throughout the battle. Shouts to Stik for an effortless performance for most of the battle. Shouts to last minute entrants (Sco & Milk, that I know of) who signed up to flesh out the field with no advance notice. I'm proud that Vert and Toon asked me to participate. I look forward to more of the "Versus" franchise going forward.

I didn't censor the word "faggot" to protect to social ills of the world. If I have to sit through one more exhausting ass battle full of cliche homophobic references I am going to slit my wrists the long way and bleed out all of my hateful, tasteless blood. And as expected, it lost steam and got very gay towards the end. Not gay in a bad way, just cats weren't saying a whole lot other than how deep they were in each other's asses. Besides Stik, who said "You worked at Shoney's which closed and shit." Best line EVER.
