from: http://p076.ezboard.com/fpoliticalpalacefrm70.showMessage?topicID=109.topic The Difference Between an MC and a RAPPER By Life Exist Back in the summer of the year 1978, my block had its first block party. It took place in Brooklyn, on Park Place between Franklyn & Bedford Avenue. I was 11 years old. The block party was the hottest event of the year. We had events like rely races, dance contest, etc. Most if not all of the people on the block brought out food and barbequed all day, it was fun. This was the first time that I saw a DJ up close. At the time all I did was race up and down the street with my friends on my bike. As we came close to the end of the block party event and the day turned dark, there was this guy speaking on the mic. His name was MC Stewy B¨. The DJ put on a record called 'Love is the Message', and from that point on, Stewy B¨ started saying rhymes on the mic over the music. At the age of 11, I had really no idea what was going on, but one thing I did notice is that both Stewy B¨ and the DJ had everyone's attention. They even had the attention of each and every girl I had a crush on - on the block. Stewy sound real magical on the mic because the DJ put a slight echo reverb behind Stewy's voice. The rhymes came over love is the message like 'Yes Yes Ya'll-Ya'll, You Don't Stop-Stop, Keep on-on, To-To, The break of Dawn-Dawn.' This was the first baddest thing I had ever heard. The next day, all you heard was Stewy tore shyt up, Stewy is a fly MC. Brooklyn was never the same to me after that. The Difference Between an MC and a RAPPER: 1.The MC-Master of Ceremony, or how Rakim put it 'Move the Crowd'. *An MC can verbally turn the show or party out whether or not they have a little or a lot of rhymes to say. *A true MC benefits and manifest his or her own creative MC styles not only from Hip Hop, but from other multiple music and non music creative forms, for example ¡V Jazz, Rock & Roll, Bee Bop, Rock, Heavy metal, R&B, Classic R&B, Comedy, TV Shows, etc. *A true MC never bites. *A true MC would never publicly beneath his or herself to no one; For example, an MC would never say ¡V I¡¦m not as good as so & so, but I come close. MCs give props, and that's it. *An MC has respect for the old school-The real old school. *An MC doesn't have to get too personal to win a battle. *A true MC is politically and consciously aware, and can or will put it in a rhyme. * An MC is very diverse in style-originality and flow-versatility. *An MC doesn't need a lot of promotional and marketing propaganda hype to be admired. *An MC can drop rhymes over multiple beats without pause. *An MC never runs out of ideas. *An MC can pass the Mic to others in an MC verse. *A true MC cannot be defined or put under any category but DOPE. 2. The RAPPER -The weakest form of an MC: *A Rapper often bites from others. *A Rapper has very little love or respect for the old school-The real old school. *A Rapper is only about getting paid no matter what the cost financially or morally. *A Rapper is often politically unaware and is very unconscious of the effects of their ignorant lyrics. *True Rappers say things in their rhymes to mislead others from getting into the music business. Rappers have fear of the competition, that's why they mislead you. Example-'I sold drugs to get to get in'. This helps no one but the cops and our government. *Rappers only can rap about the same thing other Rappers are rapping about. Same story just flipped a different way. *Rappers only lyrically benefit off rap music, that's why creativity is very low. *Most Rappers have no show or performance skill at all. Rappers often grab their balls and walk left and right across the stage shouting and pointing into the crowed 95% of the duration of the show. *Rappers need a lot of marketing/Video hype to be recognized and admired. *Rappers are categorized ¡V Hard Core, Gangster, commercial, underground, etc. *A Rapper can't battle without getting real personal. *A Rapper has no love or respect for the game or his or her own people. NOT anyone can be an MC, but anyone can be a Rapper. It's no longer Hip Hop, it's @#%$ Pop. Rappers just pop @#%$ and because of the marketing/Video hype, almost everyone buys it. I know what you're saying, he's a hater, I'm not hating I just miss good rhymes and shows. Now a days, only an MC would know what I am talking about. If you call me a hater, you must be a rapper or a supporter of a Rapper. The truth is 'all Rappers are limited and they often know that they are WACK!! Big up to MCS: Cold Crush, Crash Crew, Furious 5, Jazzy 5, Jimmy Spicer, Fantastic 5, Spoonie Gee, LL Cool J, Slick Rick, Busta Rhymes, Doug E Fresh, Grand Puba, Rakim, KRS 1, Method Man, Chubb Rock, Q Tip, Lauren Hill, Big Daddy Kane, OL¡¦ Dirty Bastard, Biggie Smalls, LiL Kim, Chuck D, Antoinette, Special Ed, etc. Any inquiries, hit me at: [email protected]

Someone could MC a banquet, award show, or just announce the next performance. Perhaps MC shouldn't be confused with hip hop at all. According to the book "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" the American hip hop MC and DJ took shape in Jamaica in the 50's or 60's. Kool Herc too was Jamaican. Could we just refer to MCs as people in front of a live audience, rather than in a studio?

That sounds like a bunch of self-righteous conservative nonsense. Hip-hop has no rules and could never be confined by such guidelines. This article is more akin to a ten commandments for hip-hop. It’s the totality of the activity of the individuals who comprise hip-hop that make it what it is and because you find within it a myriad of contrasting ideas and individuals, it can never be reined in by such limiting prescriptions. [b:e24363bc03]These folks need to stop mythologizing hip-hop and accept it on its own terms. [/b:e24363bc03] Hip-hop [i:e24363bc03]is[/i:e24363bc03] a spontaneous and autonomous culture that grew out of definite material conditions. No one sat down at the roundtable and pulled it out of their ass. As hip-hop developed more folks have attempted to define it, but no one can [i:e24363bc03]ever [/i:e24363bc03]turn an autonomous culture into a religious doctrine; not KRS-One, not Afrika Bambaataa, and not this author. And even if they succeed, it will not stop the spontaneous activity of the culture itself. Any and every time someone endeavors to say what hip-hop is and is not, you will find another to contradict them and say and do the exact opposite. Hip-hop is ugly, racist, sexist, homophobic, violent, and materialistic, but it is also revolutionary, multiracial, progressive, beautiful, and proud. If you can’t accept that, [b:e24363bc03]then it is your problem[/b:e24363bc03], not any so-called biting rapper. Sorry to come off like a smart ass. [/b]

Couldn't have said it better myself KB. Rap began with a bunch of overly macho braggerts who ranted about "solid gold cars", money and women (if you can believe that). If anything, it's come full circle. I personally feel as though my music should be substantive, but I don't hold everyone to that standard. I hate the fact that people can be so divisive about Hip-Hop culture.

Well I'm glad I'm in good company. This is a prominent tendency; this hip-hop republicanism, and it has to be struggled against. People have to be able to change with hip-hop. All the above really shows is that they are out of touch with hip-hop and not the other way around. With every new shift brings new possibilities and no matter how hard we try we cannot roll back the wheel of history. Reach, you should check out a new piece I wrote. It might be a little heavy, but give it a shot. If it turns out to be too much, I have another version where I tone down the language a lot.
