Since then, this up and coming artist has been bouncing back and forth working along side B.K. in Cali and back to kickin’ it in his hometown of Kansas City keeping things real performing at local venues in the area. During his most recent visit back home for the holidays, Wakil dropped his I’m So Cool Mixtape: The Transformation concluding the year of 2008. The joint is packed with 22 tracks comprised of his classics such as “KC Stand Up” and “I’m So Cool”, remixes [Rhianna’s “Disturbia”, “Love In This Club” Usher ft. Young Jeezy], and several freestyles. Along with a new song, “24/7”, Mansa also gives us a teaser creating anticipation for his yet to be released song, “Air.” Since there are so many dope tracks on this release, I’ll touch a bit more on a few of my personal favorites. First off, “Lookin’ Boy” shows off his roasting skills. This song somewhat reminds me of my first impression of Wakil. I had heard “I’m So Cool”, “KC Stand Up,” and “Swagger” from the MySpace link Craig Smith threw my way, but before I saw him perform on stage, I heard him freestyle during the goofy shenanigans of a Saturday night at Greg Enemy’s pad. Honestly, I was nearly on the floor laughing my ass off. He certainly keeps the fun in all he does. Barely in his early twenties like myself, Wakil’s references to Saved by the Bell, classic Nickelodeon shows, Flava Flav, and Bernie Mac really hit the nail on the head for my generation. I had to learn the words right away! “Cheaper To Keep Her” would be included in my top favorites as well. I dig the content. His witty rhymes over a catchy beat give only more reason to bump this in your ride around the city, yet it has so much….class. “What You Lookin’ 4” is a joint that allows listeners to witness Wakil strutting his stuff while inspiring you to get your groove on. I can see this as a great stage piece to work the crowd. One of the catchiest tracks has to be “Google Me.” It seems to be a description of the process he has been through getting his music to the ears of the masses and changes of the relationships he may have had with people before he became Chief Wakil. I can’t get that hook out of my head once it’s there, most definitely his plan all along. I’m sure of it! “Google Me” also illustrates where our generation gets their music and other useful (as well as not so useful) information from: The World Wide Web. I do admit, for new artists, it’s an immense asset for distribution. If you are a KC Native, “Take You There” should hit your senses quite well as Chief Wakil references hot spots around town from shopping centers to clubs, familiar highways to 18th in Vine, and shout outs to fellow hip hop artists in the Metro. Although in California half the time, Wakil is constantly voicing his Kansas City pride throughout the whole mixtape. I do not like to categorize or compare rap artists if it is unnecessary, but for those who may not know Wakil’s music, he has somewhat of a Kanye West feel; some new and old influence. He may feel similar since a track on the I’m So Cool Mixtape is to the introduction of Kanye’s new album 808s & Heartbreak, “Say You Will.” Overall, this is a must download. It’s free, so just check it anyways or I’ll pop you upside the head. That’s right, it’s a threat. On a serious note, take a look at what cats are doing outside the box for Kansas City. There is always something valuable under the surface. http://www.myspace.com/chiefwakil MIXTAPE DOWNLOAD http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=56bbd5bb29e69beb91b20cc0d07ba4d21f9a7dee712aee64
