Topic: Just wanted to start some sh*t

This is a post from my blog (craigsmithrocks.blogspot.com) and I just wanted to share it... My take on 808's & Heartbreak At first, I didn't really care to hear any of this new material... It was just not on my list... Then, I heard all of Love Lockdown and I really didn't like the song (still don't). After a week or so, I heard Heartless and was completely blown away... I really liked the vibe of it and even though I was not too fond of the first single, I liked that neither of these songs had a typical subject matter. Fast forward to the albums release. I have heard the worst things imaginable about this album and I couldn't believe it.. NO ONE LIKED IT! I, being me, casually played the friend role and went along with the comments. NOW... My thoughts on this new venture: Kanye West has changed. College Dropout saw backpack, soul-sampled, really cool outta college Kanye. Late Registration showed a man that was getting adjusted to fame and telling his story in the limelight. Graduation, in my opinion, had a more GRADUATED feel to it. It was music for the man that was evolving... Ladies and gentlemen... He's evolved. I think that you will only like 808's and Heartbreak if you get it. You have to understand that this collection of music, done in this fashion, is Kanye West EVOLVING and trying new things. We, especially me, cry and beg for something new and groundbreaking. We always want "outside the box" but can't really take in the informal because it IS outside the box. I think autotune is, "eh... whatever," like everyone else. The thing that I think makes it acceptable in this case is that KANYE ISN'T A WONDERFUL SINGER but he sounds okay, in my opinion, with this tool. I say the album is dope. It takes balls to put this out. This isn't hip hop and definitely isn't Chi-town's finest back in 04. Give it a shot... It's something new. Welcome to 09!

That's the narrative I've continued to hear about the album. Problem is, auto tune isn't groundbreaking. And honestly it doesn't require much ingenuity. I'd be impressed if he'd boarded the bandwagon a year or two ago. At this point it just isn't all that impressive to me. I wanna hear Hip Hop from Kanye, not House.

Well that, in my opinion is the problem. The auto tune isn't the focal point. The music is. If we were so conservative as to say that the auto tune ruines the art, then we become those people that said hip hop was gonna go out of style in the late 80s... The autotune is a tool... like an MPC or hell, ProTools. I take it that 808s and Heartbreak is meant to sound like that because of the entire feel of the music. I dont think that the auto tune was a ploy for people to buy the album. He just found a new tool. Plus, the way music is, it doesn't take all that much ingenuity anymore to even make a RAP SONG! Ya know? lol That's how you've got to look at it to appreciate it. If not, then he's just on the bandwagon. Consider this... He found a new way to paint and ran with it. He likes it... He thought you would. If I found a new way to make music... Even if everyone had done it... I wouldn't let that stop me. If I liked it. Also, in my opinion, I think it's good that a mainstream artist is stretching out. Music isn't JUST hip hop... Hip Hop isn't even JUST hip hop.

I think you'd be alot disingenuous to suggest that his recent musical exploits aren't House-inspired. Hell, he's from Chicago.

[quote:a451ebc92c="CraigSmith"]Well that, in my opinion is the problem. The auto tune isn't the focal point.[/quote:a451ebc92c] It's completely unprecedented for a Rap artist to have done an entire album utilizing Antares' audio processor. That, in my mind, makes it a focal point of the album. He made it a focal point in his promotion of the project. [quote:a451ebc92c]The autotune is a tool... like an MPC or hell, ProTools.[/quote:a451ebc92c] I think it's quite a bit different. [quote:a451ebc92c]Consider this... Hip Hop isn't even JUST hip hop.[/quote:a451ebc92c] I just think with how saturated Top 40 radio is currently with AutoTune-manipulated vocals in songs it's hard to call that "stretching out". In my mind it's just more of the same. That's why I was always such a big fan of Kanye's because he WASN'T hopping on the latest trends to sweep the industry.

    1. I hate AutoTune 2. It should die. 3. House is dope 4. Kanye's new album sounds nothing like House - nope. 5. If we, especially artists, are able to transcend our guards and accept this you'd see the beauty in it. Now, there is no bigger critic of AutoTune than I. It is an epidemic. As an artist, I attempt to make timeless music - AT in my opinion won't encourage that. However, let me put it like this. Everyone can buy a paintbrush and attempt to paint a picture. It's under the auspices of the artist to use the brush create a Mona Lisa. I think we're giving AutoTune way too much credit. There are exceptions to EVERYTHING. Isn't that why we do what we do?

Maybe he didn't see it, yeah? Respect an opinion, not "blabber"...that sounds somewhat negative in my opinion. I believe he created the thread to discuss the opposing angel as well. He's not saying you have to agree. Peace. 😀 As far as Kayne? Compared to his previous work, it's not so great. I'd prefer older works from this Sir. I understand. Maybe he just put himself in someone else's shoes to deal with some shit? Hell, I don't really know what goes on inside his head. Something he wanted out of his system. There are also a couple angels to review that really create debate on this. Technicals..autotune, compare/contrast, creativity, voice quality...etc..or simply viewing him as an "Average Joe" perhaps. Maybe he just took a different approach outside his norm to get over this mainstream stuff. For all my artists of every kind, do you ever just do something just to see the process of how you end up doing it? 😕

The timing on his Autotune excursion could have been better but it's HIS new way to paint. The fact that it's unprecidented makes it something worth the listen. For Kanye to basically SING the whole album (autotune or not) makes him more than a rapper. It makes him a well rounded artist. The comparison to the Akai MPC is just a general statement. They both are productional products that we, as artists, use. Alot of people didn't even like T Pain when he came out. Me being one. But once you step away from the "Music should be like this" way of approaching it, you weed out the good concepts from bad. And I know Pain isn't popular in these parts of the net but I wonder why??? In my opinion, the different avenues of making music, including the use of Autotune, should be encouraged. Where would we be if live musicians would have told us AND CONVINCED us that using computers is a bad idea? Still making the same ol same and most of us wouldnt be in business. But enough of my blabber... lol Oh, and I didn't read the other Kanye post.... sorry for taking up infinite web space.

[quote:42063e361d="CraigSmith"]The timing on his Autotune excursion could have been better but it's HIS new way to paint.[/quote:42063e361d] I doubt seriously that Kanye will deploy AutoTune ever again. Largely because by the time his next album is released the trend will be passe. He's capitalizing off of the popularity of AT-manipulated vocals. I'm not particularly mad at that, in itself. My problem is he's never been one to follow trends. He's always been ahead of the curve. [quote:42063e361d]The fact that it's unprecidented makes it something worth the listen.[/quote:42063e361d] It's only unprecedented in its degree. Other rappers have run processed vocals. And don't get me wrong... I'm not the kind of fan that suggests that music has to be completely original and new. I just disagree with the idea that he's done something groundbreaking by hopping on a trend that's been in motion for more than 2 years now. [quote:42063e361d]Alot of people didn't even like T Pain when he came out. Me being one. But once you step away from the "Music should be like this" way of approaching it, you weed out the good concepts from bad.[/quote:42063e361d] I'm not suggesting that music should have any particular boundaries. My point, rather, is that the music itself is formulaic and likely won't stand the test of time. Because it's following the trend suit of the industry. I hate having to make concessions to accept music for what it is. I'm spoiled on good music I grew up with and continue to consume to this day. It's hard for me to dumb my musical tastes down to accept the efforts of T-Pain when I own Jazmine Sullivan's album. [quote:42063e361d]Where would we be if live musicians would have told us AND CONVINCED us that using computers is a bad idea?[/quote:42063e361d] The ushering in of the digital age is something that will be much longer-standing than the usage of AutoTune in its current incarnation. It hasn't gone away. If this trend can have the kind of longevity and impact that computers have had...you'll have an argument. But, I think that's a lot different.

miss me with that shit T-Pain writes and produces so many hits for others and himself, and no one wants to give him his props cause he wears tall tees. Kanye writes some teenagers version of heart break, dresses like Pee Wee Herman and stops combing his hair, and hes a genius! elitist bullshit lol the record is just bad, but the marketing is brilliant, thats why were even havin this conversation. i know if T-Pain would have made this same record, everyone would crucify the dude, and that would be that, curtain closed. shits funny

Neither does attire factor into my appreciation of Kanye West. I'm only looking at their individual artistic merit. Kanye has career-defining, timeless music under his belt. In my opinion, T-Pain does not. The two of them could swap wardrobes and it would make no difference in how I view the two of them as artists.

I think both of these artist are brilliant in their own right. Cant take away from the fact that both of these guys have filled a void in the industry, both did something that no one else was doing at the time of their arrival. (this is not to be confused with original) After that, its simply a matter of taste.. Very few people see things for what they are without putting in their own lil twist, but then again thats the beauty in discussions like this. All the different variables that have been taken into consideration during this discussion is craaaazy...production tools, groundbreaking, creativity..hell even been broken down to attire!! Personally...it took quite a bit for me to open up to T-Pain after; a) hearing numerous joints about strippers, b) hearing him perform withOUT the voice-over---yeeeesh!! c) Not hearing anything commercially that intrigued me enough to dig for more. After Smoov convinced me to let my guard down & listen to Thr33 Ring Circus, must admit, its not that bad, not good enough for me to break bread on, but not bad. Personally believe he should have stuck to rapping cus he's actually pretty clever when he spits... When I 1st heard "Love Lockdown" I was VEEEEEERRY impressed with Kanye..(fine print..the first time I heard it was him doing it live on MTV, yeah...no AT) While he's no Luther, I believe the instrumentation, the live band, & his performance made up for what he lacked vocally..but I dug the song none the less. Then I heard it when he released it to radio....ZOINKS...I hated it!! I am NOT a fan of AT and it ruined what I think could have been one hellva single...woulda preferred he just used his natural voice. Thats really my problem with his entire album because musically & subject wise I dig it..
