same thing about Eminem, DMX, and Jay-Z (fall off artist)

Im not sure I ever liked ye's personality but his music was dope up until this point. All his other CD's are dope production and lyrically (in my opinion). I usually just take music for what it is, but this mug is like one big cliche.
Autotune, 808's, love songs, and Lil Wayne are all good stuff but when you make a whole cd around it and it's REAL old.
I think his next cd should be dope if he sticks to rapping. He just had to get all the corny rap cliches out of his system.
The best Autotune song out there still has to be this....

no i.d. did the heartless track and i think the sh-- is dope. it took a while for me to appreciate the new cd. He wasn't trying to be on some super lyrical stuff with the cd. If you break down the melodies, most of them are based on the abc's. If you check out the cord progressions in most of the tracks it is based that way and i was reading an interview where he discussed as one of the basis of the cd. He wanted people to learn the music and the words. if I can find the article, i will post it
thanks again for those who came out last night to hh&hot wings. It was refreshing playing some quality hip hop joints

thread jack...but i'm sick of hearing this shit. t-pain, kanye and ron browz are all making this shit pop in the vein of zapp & roger. the technology is not new. and folks are just mad they didn't take advantage of a piece of gear that's been around for ages. hip hop can be fun and interesting without your typical jazz/funk/krautrock samples and uninspired wannabe inspiring rhymes. nothing wrong with good old fashioned hip-hop...but hip-hop does not need to revolve around it.
and t-pain...dude is RIDICULOUSLY talented. so what he can't really sing? it's pretty much pimp game when you can run the industry singing catchy hooks on countless tunes when you can't sing a fucking lick. but on the songwriting tip, production and overall fun vibes he brings to everything he does...i hope he he's here to stay. and just so you and everyone else knows (or at least sees someone say it and mean it)...t-pain can RIP on the mic. anyone even remotely interested in hearing some shit...send me a pm. thr33 ringz pretty much sucks the dillz though. could've made a serious mark on his story if he would've really come with the whole package.

on a side note t-pain can actually sing. When he came to Kandi, he didn't have no effects or vocoder and he was hitting every note to perfection. I was hating on him at first, but him and his camp was humble and he gives a good performance. Let the truth be told, the original t-pain single I'm sprung was originally a demo track for akon, but they ran with it as a joke and it caught on.

I'm guessing you're about as sick of my spiel as I am of T-Pain being compared to Roger Troutman. It's arguably the worst comparison of two artists in the music world that I've ever heard.
Primarily because it utilizes two completely different kinds of technology.
Secondarily, because Troutman was 10 times the musician. He was a gifted songwriter and composer (something T-Pain cannot be credited with).
Let me take that a step further...
AutoTune, at its core, is used best sparingly and was only ever intended to pitch-correct.

My expectations were so low for this new album Kanye could only go up.
Only time will unveil the fate of this album (not to mention Kanye's career.) With that said, 808's and Heartbreak was a "good" album. Kanye uses AutoTune throughout, and one can easily tell, but he doesn't use it as ridiculously as Lil Wayne. Kanye actually TRIES to hit the correct note (and he can, in fact, carry a tune.)
Hate it or love it, this album was the best thing I've heard of the contemporary lift of AutoTune. It was done incredibly tastefully.
Kanye typically rhymes through a generic mesh of witty punch lines with a n interesting mix of seemingly third person urban issues with aspirations of grandeur. This go, Kanye took an even more ambiguous approach mixing pure emotion with contemporary electronic (hate it or love it) styles.
Kanye, has what a lot of emcee's lack - the ability to remain relevant by mutating stylistically. When you're a classic emcee, however, you don't need to.
I'd strive for the latter.

T-Pain cannot rap. He can make insanely dope songs ("Church" anyone?) But no. The dude is wack as fuck as a rapper. He also makes insanely wack songs. I don't really follow the guy enough to care. I like a few of his songs that have found their way to my ears, but I don't proactively seek him out. "Church" is one of the dopest songs of 2007 in my opinion. He DESTROYS that shit.
As for being upset about "autotune ruining music", you have to be kidding.
If you listen to the radio, and let it judge your perception of music, then yeah-- you are probably sick of hearing autotune. But um, if you pick your own musical intake, you have literally hundreds of thousands of albums to listen to that don't go near autotune.
Ok, so Kanye did a trendy ass, fashionista album with autotune and lame ass song concepts. Don't listen to it. Since when is Kanye the end all/be all of music? He jacked RZA's style of production, flipped it a bit, and made a bunch of contemporary hip-hop songs that a lot of people raved about. He can do whatever he wants on this new album.
I won't listen to it, and I feel absolutely no emotion when saying that. I don't like the way that type of shit sounds.
Music is not to be picked on. The absolute best music of all time is being made right now. You have to decide if you receive it with an open-mind and can see the talent in it, or if you are gonna bicker about it not providing you with the feeling music gave you when you were innocent and young.
It's your fault though, if you pick the latter. Shut your mind off and enjoy the shit that appeals to you.

For the record, this is a message board that's open to such discussions.
I'm not mad at Kanye for what he did with his latest album. Disappointed, yes, but only because he's one of my favorite Rap acts.
Is AutoTune staving off brilliant musical works being created all over the world? Absolutely not. But it is having a profound effect on the industry. Hell, it's having one hell of an impact on artists who work FICA jobs. I was just in a recording studio last night that has it's own assortment of AutoTuned vocals. Vocals contributed by artists who don't belong to the Universal's and Atlantic's of the world.
AutoTune has so saturated the industry that it's forced artists who are otherwise talented enough not to need it to begin manipulating their vocals. It's staving off creativity and forcing out mainstream artists who don't dance to the beat of that audio-processed drum. That's a bad thing in my view.
The Radio will never be my barometer for good music. It hasn't been a reliable source for good music in decades. I rarely ever listen. But certainly I still realize the effect this trend has had on the music business.
I'm all for passing on the albums that don't appeal to you.
I'm not gonna boycott the Def Jam offices for "808's..." It ain't that deep.
But for a Monday afternoon conversation I have no problem with throwing my two cents in. It's fun to talk about.

One thing I just LOVE about this site is how when people on here aren't into an artist their talent is dismissed. This even goes with whole genres of music with people on here..... It truly is amazing to me and it really speaks VOLUMES about why the KC hiphop scene is the way it is.
FOR EXAMPLE, I am by no means a fan of country music but I have an immense amount of respect for the talent those artists have. Same goes with most bluegrass, i'm not gonna drive around listening to it, but the talent is not only there it can be mindblowing.
Really...ruining music with autotune? REALLY 🙄 🙄 🙄
I mean come on Reach, wow so T Pain found a way to make Autotune do weird things to a voice that it wasn't originally intended to do....do you have any idea how many musical innovations were made by making an instrument/piece of hardware/software do something it wasn't originally intended to do?!? Step outside of your own taste for a minute.
For someone not wanting to be a stuffy hardass you sure are doing a good job at it.
PS...the Kanye album is okay, few good tracks, few blah tracks, couple really lame ones.

I love love love the Old Flavor Flav. I would've killed any body for that nigga back in the day.
If you said something negative about P.E., I was on you.
Now the sight of Flav (on the Television wylin) just makes me hang my head.
People change, and sometimes its just for the worst.
When you sell your soul, to keep making hits. I have no more respect for you.
Larry Johnson, is nobody in my eyes. I don't respect his skillz, because he spit in a girls face. He can still run the ball 2,000,000 yards, but I will never give him props. I seen him at the mall, my cousins got there hats signed, he asked me if I wanted a sig. I mumbled, I don't want shit from you and turnt around and walked away, all bich like. Im sure he felt my coldness.
I didnt wanna get punched anyway.
Kanye is theoretically spitting in the face of Hip Hop.

i feel you on some of that, Ben.
Probably every genre of dance music and hip hop was founded on somebody pushing the wrong button on a piece of equipment by accident, accidentally touching a record while on it's turntable (what people now know as "scratching"), or curiously speeding up the pitch of a playing record or slowing it down on a turntable (drum and bass anyone? chopped and screwed music anyone?). Anyone who doesn't know this stuff already needs to buy the book "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life," and read it at least 2 times.
Random thoughts:
The other day on XM radio, one of the hosts said that T-Pain had a new song out where he's dissing other hip hop artists for biting his style (but in the song he pardons Kanye and Weezy)...
and,
Will T-Pain stick around?...
Ben, check your PM, though.

I can quickly name a dozen artists whose material I have zero interest in that I believe are uber-talented. I make a very clear distinction between the artist and their requisite talents. I have no problem with that.
[quote:0251926b90]This even goes with whole genres of music with people on here..... It truly is amazing to me and it really speaks VOLUMES about why the KC hiphop scene is the way it is.[/quote:0251926b90]
The fact that people have critical music tastes has no bearing on the music culture here in Kansas City. It's not like we're the only town or scene in the country with certain ideas about music. Come on.
[quote:0251926b90]Really...ruining music with autotune? REALLY 🙄 🙄[/quote:0251926b90]
I suppose that depends on your definition of the word "ruin".
I believe that any trend that sweeps the industry to the degree in which it causes otherwise vocally talented artists to begin manipulating their voices is bad, bad, bad. From that perspective, I believe it's ruining the music world.
[quote:0251926b90]I mean come on Reach, wow so T Pain found a way to make Autotune do weird things to a voice that it wasn't originally intended to do....[/quote:0251926b90]
AutoTune was released in 1997. T-Pain can't be credited for its discovery.
It's recent popularity, to be sure, but it had been around for quite some time. Long before anyone ever knew who he was.
[quote:0251926b90]do you have any idea how many musical innovations were made by making an instrument/piece of hardware/software do something it wasn't originally intended to do?!? Step outside of your own taste for a minute.[/quote:0251926b90]
Step outside my own tastes in music? Why would I do that?
That'd be like me asking you to compromise what YOU LIKE for the sake of identifying with my position. I know full well that there is value in music I don't particularly care for. I'm not going to compromise my own standards though to see T-Pain as some musical genius. He's not. His entire career is based on the artificial manipulation of his voice. There's nothing genius about that.
I'm sorry... I grew up on Stevie Wonder.
I'm a Tony Royster, Jr. junkie. THAT is musical genius.
T-Pain just found a way to pimp the game. More power to him.
And for the record, I realize that dozens of musical innovations came as a result of utilizing tools in ways that were unintended. Many of those innovations became integral parts of the music world though. AutoTune, in its current form, will not. This is a trend that will fizzle out in due time.
It's not like the advent of the electric guitar. I've heard that argument 100 times and it doesn't hold.
AutoTune will continue to be used, sparingly, to correct pitch, but the T-Pain AT setting has an expiration date on it.

Hello!
- Dec 5, 2008 10:09pm by Ben_Fuller
The funny thing is I'm not even a huge T Pain fan, I play his big hits in the club a lot but he is definitely not one of my favorite artists, but I do respect him. Music genius? Mmmmmm that might be an exaggeration. A very talented individual with an excellent grasp on both pop music and the music industry itself? Absolutely.
I can honestly, from the bottom of my heart and having been a musician since i was 3 years old say that if you really think T Pain is completely devoid of talent then I just can't really take anything you say seriously, b/c it just shows you are too caught up in your own bitterness towards a trend he started to see anything else. I'm sorry but it is impossible to reach the level he, or any artist has reached without some level of talent, even corny ass manufactured pop groups have talent, in their own way.
I understand this little peanut gallery on here doesn't direct the music scene in KC, I am saying the attitudes expressed on here give insight (at least to me) on many of the massive deficiencies in the music scene you are a part of. Come on...
I agree the autotune everything trend sucks, is it ruining music? Of course not, trends come and go. I would have thought you would have a better understanding of the music industry than to claim any one trend is ruining music. Diluting creativity...definitely, but thats been happening in pop music SINCE THE BEGINNING.
Why step outside your own taste? To grow as a person and an artist thats why. Otherwise you keep operating in your comfort zone and you keep making the same boring shit...almost like T PAIN.

I've already conceded that he has quantifiable musical talent.
He obviously has a sense of what translates well to Corporate Radio.
I make no bones about his ability to write popular songs.
My problem, again, is the fact that his entire career is based around a preset on a pitch-corrective software program.
[quote:87b3b3c2ea]I understand this little peanut gallery on here doesn't direct the music scene in KC, I am saying the attitudes expressed on here give insight (at least to me) on many of the massive deficiencies in the music scene you are a part of. Come on...[/quote:87b3b3c2ea]
Critical musical tastes are not handicapping the local music scene.
That's ridiculous. That assumes that everyone here or at least an acting majority shares my views of popular music.
There's no correlation.
Kansas City has an immensely diverse music culture.
I can name local musicians in more than a dozen different genres.
And even within those music genres there's a wide range of sub-genres.
This town has as broad a spectrum, musically, as any town I've ever set foot in.
[quote:87b3b3c2ea]I agree the autotune everything trend sucks, is it ruining music? Of course not, trends come and go. Let's keep this above the belt.
Don't challenge my understanding of the music industry.
I explained TO YOU that it was, in fact, a trend and couldn't be reconciled with major musical innovations like the electric guitar. I realize that it's going to die out. That's part of the reason why I've indicted the practice of gratuituous pitch-correction. It's a gimmick. One that involves little ingenuity on the part of the artist. It's being overused and it's over-saturating the music business. To the degree that artists who don't stand in need of it are following suit. It's stripping the artistic element away and discouraging a vocalist from being good at their craft. The hell with 20 takes if you can artificially enhance a vocal to achieve perfect pitch.
[quote:87b3b3c2ea]Why step outside your own taste? To grow as a person and an artist thats why. Otherwise you keep operating in your comfort zone and you keep making the same boring shit...almost like T PAIN.[/quote:87b3b3c2ea]
You have no idea what my personal musical tastes are.
My commentary, alone, should make it painfully apparent that I'm an avid lover of music. The fact that I don't see the artistic merit of a, one, T-Pain has no bearing on my personal growth as a human being or as an artist. That's ridiculous.
I think my love of Gospel, R&B/Contemporary Soul, Jazz, Classical, Reggae, Blues, Rap, and Rock serves me well. I'm about as an eclectic a music fan as you will find. Tastes don't get a whole lot broader than that.
