Hometown Hip-Hop Heroes Get The Documentary Treatment By Your Humble Publisher ⋅ October 15, 2008 ⋅ Print This Post Print This Post ⋅ Post a comment To those in the know, DVS Mindz is synonymous with homegrown Topeka hip-hop and rap. Formed in 1993, DVS Mindz reached local legend status by having the best live shows and better delivery on the the mic then FedEx has on its best day with packages. Sadly, after close to a decade, the group broke apart several years ago and now the former members are working on solo projects. However, if your ears and eyes are nostalgic for DVS Mindz or you want to learn what all the hype is about, then the you need to be first in line for a copy of Center of Attention. NFact Films, headed by DJ 2NEN of Miami, Florida, is responsible for the DVD’s production. The documentary, Center of Attention, covers 1993 through 2005. Center of Attention is being released on DVD. The DVD features interviews, live performances, candid off-stage footage and bonus features, such as STR8JAKKETT’s 2005 single from his debut solo album Mood Swings, “This is It.” “Jeff Harkness filmed most of the footage. Jeff used to write for The Pitch back in the days when it still supported Topeka. Jeff was down with DVS, and over the years he filmed hours and hours of footage of DVS MINDZ, on and off stage. Fast-forward to 2005 after DVS Mindz had broken up. At the time, I was with my record label, 11Third Records (made up of former DVS members Killa The Hun and Pedro Heppacuz), in Miami. We were there to sign a deal with with Nathanial Hall aka Baby B.A.M., one of the original Jungle Brothers and a certified hip-hop legend. 11Third Records was also meeting with B.A.M.’s partner, DJ 2NEN. While talking about various other things, the subject of DVS Mindz came up. I was also in Miami to shoot a video for This Is It, the first single from Mood Swings. I started telling 2NEN about all of the footage Jeff had shot. After 2NEN saw the footage, we came up with the idea of doing the documentary,” said STR8JAKKETT in an exclusive interview with Topcity Magazine. According to STR8JAKKETT, the documentary is finalized and the last step before retail is signing a deal with a distributor. “We’re currently speaking with two distributors. One is a new, independent outfit. The other is a more well-known, established name. While in my heart I prefer to work with independent companies, a decision won’t be made until we get final proposals. Once that’s cleared up, the distributor will press the DVDs and get them to retailers. I received my copy of the finished product, and while my opinion might be biased, I still think it’s a superlative offering,” said STR8JAKKETT. www.myspace.com/str8jakkettdvsmindz check out some of the video clip's to get a sneak peek peace....
