To all of the illuminated minds and illmatic perpetrators,
Almost two months have passed since the Seattle edition of the Red Bull
Music Academy closed its doors. It was with a touch of melancholy that we
packed up the piles of books in the window, which had disguised the
Academy as a bookstore, including old tomes on cooking in aspic and a gem
called “How to Zig in a Zagging Worldâ€. Zigga what?
We re-filled cartons with synthesizers and microphones, and rolled up
enough miles of cables to make Medusa blush (and no doubt call her
hairdresser for an appointment).
There were plenty of incidents and inventive incentives to take home in the
mental piggy bank, though, Who could forget seeing South African MC Maliq
drop flawless one-take rhymes in the studio over beats by fellow
participant K-Murdoch, in a session that had us gasping for breath. Then
there were the unforgettable (despite many liquid tributes and Washington
State shticky) dancefloor moments, like when Larry Heard kept us jacking
right up to the climax of a Martin Luther King speech layered with
“Brothers Gonna Work it Out†by Willie Hutch. And of course there was the
ArRange event where Deodato, Clare Fischer, Oh No, Todd Simon, Kirk
Degiorgio, Dave Matthews and Galaxy 2 Galaxy/Los Hermanos interpreted,
elevated and conducted each other’s compositions with the Northwest
Sinfonia in a concert that not only joined the dots but coloured in
between the lines, re-arranged the letters and traced threads to new
worlds.
As we wait for the official announcement of the when, where and how of the
2006 Academy, we hope you’ll make use of the tunes and spoken views
contained on the website www.redbullmusicacademy.com
RBMA Radio is up & live, with new shows weekly from a heavy selection of
producers, DJs and members of the Academy fam around the world: from Dixon
(Sonar Kollektiv) to Osunlade (Yoruba) and Alexander Robotnick’s ‘Tribute
to New Wave’ performance.
We’ll also put the spotlight on crucial Seattle sessions from February 3rd,
with hyperlink-filled type, and filmed footage of lectures from people
like Danny Krivit and Kool DJ Red Alert. It’s the hype.
Until next time: adieu, auf Wiedersehen, and all the best in musical
malarkey.
Your Academy Team
