I'm not DJing to impress people. I never have.
I play music for people. I love the music i play. In some cases I've never heard it before, but I love the experience of playing it in the midst of the environment, sonically, visually, emotionally, and culturally, just to see what happens next... 🙂
Playing a song is not my attempt to pick up a mate. I'm a married young man with a solid mental foundation who wants to experience life for all it can be, while still doing my life's work of navigating untruths for the goal of obtaining greater clarity for all whom I may interact with.
I just realized something I wanted to share with myself and with you.
Often my greatest point of frustration while DJing is watching the patrons look unsure of themselves while I aim to help expand their emotional state. In my public exploration of music I love to create new feelings, spirits, possibilities. But...
Most people in clubs / bars are there to attract other people. Therefore they request songs that are familiar to them so they feel more empowered to display themselves in all their glory (however that looks to them) to potential mates. (keep in mind this has nothing to do with genre or tempo). Granted they are single, so they are often less comfortable that those who are comforted by companions.
As someone who is currently comfortable with myself, the attempt to impress others socially is contrary to my reason for playing music. I play music to help people enjoy themselves 1st, and their friends and companions 2nd. Its an expansion of understanding of self.
Some friends of mine have mentioned to me over the years, in many ways I aim to create musical church; free from convention and expectation. I let go so you can too. But I must take time to re-center myself. I don't mean to be overly dramatic with this, but the fact is that...
At this point, I've been doing The Sauce for 14 months... that's ~60 times. As with Feel Sexy which I held for 16 months straight, I've grown too comfortable with the event. I'm deciding to take a hiatus from The Sauce to rediscover my music. I'll turn my focus to recording new music, and in my spare time, enjoying my record collection in a way I haven't been able to due since beginning my long string of constant events. Time at home to once again re-focus and create the new events and recordings that will create the future of my involvement with music as an art form and social medium. I thank all of you who have been a part of my developments through the years in their many forms;
