I'd like to see the chop shop again, or at least a version of it.
(A beatsociety type thing. )
I go to shows sometimes, just to hear new beats. I love hearing beat CDs and would love to see people do their thing live. There are tons of beat makers in the area and I'd love to hear and see them all.

Tight shit. I'd love to see a chop shop go down. I missed a couple, waiting tables at the time and always on-duty when they'd be going down. Now I'm a sedentary nine-to-fiver and would love to come listen to instrumentals. I wish more beat CD's and instrumental albums came out of here. We have some notably sick producers in this city and it'd be great for them to be show-cased more.

Don't y'all know I reads the boards? Shiat!!
First, I just want to say that I don't hold the patent rights to a beat night. If anybody wants to organize and hold a producer's showcase - go for it.
As far as the Chop Shop is concerned, yeah, it's been a while. I've been hella busy with too many projects to get into, but it's about time to get down to business. I would be down to involve more people this next time than usual (4 producers, 1 dj and 1 instrumentalist) so that everyone who is interested can get in on it. I have some core people in mind already.
I can find a venue - that's no problem, but if anybody has a suggestion, feel free to post. Also, how would y'all feel about a private party (maybe 100 heads or so) at a warehouse or something? It might be better to throw a dope show in a unique environment than doing another event at a bar.
Next - let me say that I feel that we need to step up our game some. When I play with my production team (www.myspace.com/hymnlayas) we
play beats at the same time and beat match with each other. We even have the ability to mix and fade between 2 or 3 beats solo. This is important because it keeps the pace moving, and provides a musical experience for the listeners more like listening to a DJ. Also, it's important to be able to mute certain sounds in your beat and play along with other producers, or to be able to let the instrumentalist substitute a bass line or harmony part. For these reasons, participating producers must bring the equipment they make the beats on. Bringing CDs is just not good enough.
Ok, what do you think? Let's get it crackin!

All Producers interested in doing this...
I have the perfect place to hold a Producers Conference.
jus to hold a Meeting on what is possible and what is impossible for a something never done before type of show........
lets get together and mash ideas.......
things ta talk about like............
set up a Tempo Grid...........
Therefore....
say.. 88 BPM's...
make A drum Beat for 88bpm;'s...
also a Melodic sequence minus the drums....
so then ..we can Mix Match drums with someone elses melody
and vice versa....
Jus a quick thought........
it def would work if we Midi up ....
.and of course... ta keep it moving ... get MC's involved that wanna spit over the creations........
another thing tho.. Not so Planned out ...is... I always wanted to see Beatmakers Make a beat.... i know making a beat on stage has to be Pressure....but if you Have your samples Ready and Mapped out....it should be a breeze......
Hmmmm..im jus spitting out idea's... but..how bout like... ok...
teams of 2 producers ..
on the spot...
1 makes the drum beat.
2 makes the melodic ...
as long as they have the same tempo.... and midi up machines... it will work....
even if you make your beats on a Computer....
there is a Slave / Master Option...
......................................................................................................
AS Well as... like ... every producer involved..... make a Beat CD to be played, with 5 or so beats at 1 ta 2 min lenth... to be played Before the main event of collab starts...
Jus a few ideas.....
I like the idea of the Hurricane as a Spot...
but Cover can be a bitch... and when money comes in the pic... shit never goes as planned....Unless. of course.. we can Bypass the cover...not so much worried bout the age thing tho...21 and over is no problemo...
......
therefore...Im feeling the Private Party angle.....A sorta Invite Only event. But then we gotta worry bout Sound System ETC.....!!!
talk to me Guys!!!!!

SG, I am pretty open to whatever venue or format that is decided upon, as long as we all can meet before hand, and we are all on the same page.Although I am not totally up on the whole "midi up" portion of your comment, I do use an mpd16, however it is hardly the main thing I use to compose beats, I use it as more of an add in/finishing touch sorta thing, but we could work all this out in a meeting.
I am still waiting to hear who all is going to be participating.

When my production team beat matches, we all are using pcs, but it would work with any sampler/sequencer with a bpm meter. All you have to do is set your bpm to the same speed and then use a little finnesse to start playing the beginning of the your beat at the beggining of the beat that's currently playing - or at least in time with it. If you're trying to beatmatch with a turntable or some older technology that doesn't have a bpm display, you can use a digital metronome with a tap-in feature to get a pretty close estimate of the bpm while listening to the beat before you join in. Plus, if you blend the beat you are introducing by only playing one solo instrument at a time, it won't sound so bad if you aren't perfectly on beat - as you work it out. If you use a dj mixer, you can cue it up in the headphones. So, if your computer has enough ram, you can open up like 3 copies of acid and play them all at the same time, and blend them and compose and remix - the next level.
To change tempos, all you have to do is communicate with the next dude that you are going to slow down or if he wants you to slow it down. Then drag the tempo slide bar on the acid program down or up to slow down or speed up. Don't let go of the mouse button until the beat repeats "on the one beat". Until you let the mouse button go, the tempo change will not go into effect. So, you can step it down 1 to 2 bpms every 4 bar sequence and no one will really notice the change. the result - a gradual tempo slow down that sounds pro.
Playing original beats is great, but if you can adapt and switch it up live on the spot, the you can react to what the crowd is feelin.
Playing mixed up drum beats and melodies is what the "chop" is in Chop Shop. I've been trying to get people to cue in to this concept ever since I introduced the idea. I love S's suggestion of teams of producers playing just drums or just melodies etc. - for at least one certain point in the event. Plus, we could develop different combinations of sequences and tempos and samples that can allow us to interject random samples and sounds on the fly - samples plucked out of sample libraries - not even in the beat you're playing. Plus, of course upen mics and performances by artists (who the featured producers at the Chop Shop made beats for).
This is how we lay it down - peep the HYMNLAYAS
