http://popwreckoning.wordpress.com/2008/08/18/hollapalooza-copaken-stage-kansas-city/ [quote:4ec1d161fb]I arrived at the Kansas City Repertory Theatre’s Copaken Stage not really knowing what to expect and consequently I was really pleasantly surprised by all the cool things happening at Hollapalooza. The purpose of the showcase was to promote a new hip hop musical Clay and to represent the four aspects of hip hop: graffiti, djing, b-boying and emceeing. Hollapalooza pulled this off in an inventive way that kept the audience involved. This wasn’t your usual concert because you didn’t just get to listen to hip hop, but you truly experienced it. The audience was completely immersed in hip hop.[/quote:4ec1d161fb]

Saturday was amazing and thanks to everyone who contributed. I'm forever grateful for all the heads that came through. That event was bigger than some people realize.

in my opinion, its important for our community to enlighten other communites about OUR CULTURE. I have been offering a class hiphop101 through communiversity for this reason. anything any of "US" can do to dispell misrepresentation of the rich cultural depth of hiphop can only help those of US who perform, represent, live lives, raise families, participate in any way in our culture. its time to support all aspects of our culture by sharing your unique perspective with as many as possible. multiply or die. to this end please respond to this positive opportunity to enlighten and share OUR CULTURE WITH A LARGER, BROADER AUDIENCE present magazine was very present at the Hollapaloosa Saturday. they had a photographer there ALL DAY! last night I received this email Hey there, PresentMagazine.com sent photographer Phil Peterson to snap some shots of Hollapalooza, the hip hop summit, last weekend. He got some good shots that we plan to run this week as a photo essay that visually depicts some of the hip hop action - b-boys, rappers, live painting, turntablists, etc. Here's how I hope you can help with this feature. I'd like to offer more context about hip hop that can give our readers a better sense of what the culture is about, what these guys at Hollapalooza are trying to express through words, clothing, style, dance moves, etc. First-person remarks from you would be more dead on than me trying to distill and describe what's going on in KC's hip hop community with a bunch of 5-cent adjectives. Besides those people involved in Hollapalooza, I am tapping people in the KC hip hop community to get as many responses as possible. So, if you're up for it, mind answering a few questions? I'd like to get answers by Thursday, August 21 or sooner, if possible. What's your name and connection to hip hop - music, dance, art, fashion? Any web sites that we can link to? Hip Hop is a cultural term with a deep history that embodies music, clothing, dance, etc. What does hip hop signify to you, personally and culturally? What messages and sense of identity do you want to communicate based on your connection to hip hop? There is plenty of misunderstanding about hip hop and what people think it is. What are some of those false associations? From my perspective, the essence of hip hop isn't just a performance, slogans or slang easily spit out, or provocative ideas attacking from the status quo. It seems that for those people truly into hip hop as a personal form of expression and way of life, it's not a mere posture or look. It's something that is part of daily life no matter what your zip code is, and that ideas and words that spring from daily experience filter into the mainstream through the various expressions of hip hop (music, fashion, graffiti, etc.) and other cultural dialects. Do you agree? What are your thoughts? Can you share any examples of how encounters and experiences from daily life inform your outlook in relation to hip hop? I hope that getting some responses from a range of people involved with this event, and KC hip hop in general, will be informative for our readers. Any input you can share is welcome. Feel free to send this to other people you know in KC's hip hop community that might want to speak out. Drop me a line. Pete Dulin Editor, PresentMagazine.com [email protected] Local Food, Music, Arts, and Culture. 816.914.1184 PLEASE RESPOND TO PETER. I find his motives to be respectful and his intent above reproach. this, like the opportunity to perform on that beautiful state of the art stage saturday, is just the beginning for local hiphop if WE raise to meet it. DON'T SLEEP or Hate on advancement opportunities just because it's never been done before or you don't know if "they" are "keepin it real or down with it" let's rise and never stop challenging ourselves to grow out into this little place we call home. I know yall get tired of me saying shit like this and you think I'm trippin but hey somebody's got say this shit sometime. peace nrg

They asked me about you being a panelist for one of their future events involved with the Hip Hop musical Clay. I told them you'd be perfect for their panel.

First, thanks to NRG for posting my query about hip hop. Definitely, my intentions are to get your voices and viewpoints down in your words...what hip hop is about and means. I want to elevate discussion and increase exposure of local hip hop artists and the scene itself. Music reviews are one approach. I'm going for something more in-depth that kickstarts a conversation or simply puts information in front of KC en masse that isn't privy to the local hip hop community. Who better to speak on it than the people most directly involved? That said, I will repost my request below. Please drop me a line directly at [email protected]. Thanks.
