Topic: Give us your honest feedback on the radio show.

Whatz the deal
For thoese that have listen to the "Show Me Mix Show" I would really like to get some honest feedback on the show. Good or bad or in between. We would like to know what should be worked on and what should be dropped. It doesn't mater i just want to hear from the people that matter the most, which is you!
With out you there is no us, so let them fly, don't be scared, no one is going to bite you by any means. But all i ask is that we keep this on a professional level, we are all adults here. with that said let the words flow!
Thanks

I have to say that i don't catch the Show-me-mix-show very often but i did happen to turn it on the other night and see what was up.
I have to say i was very disappointed in the hosting ablities of the male host:
Lonnie Luv
What's this dude's deal? Who is he?
I've sat through plenty of radio banter in my time and just played it off but this last show actually made me and the three others i was with at the time cringe.
There is a point where "jester" like humor ceases to be funny and becomes abnoxious. Lonnie Luv has crossed the line. I didn't hear one word of helpful / insightful / even compreshensive speech from his mouth. Is he supposed to be Mz. Shai's comic releif or what? Stupid remarks and lame phone interviews don't add up to good radio hosting unless they are funny.
This is painful. Maybe i am missing the joke, but i don't think i am alone in thinking this dude is a waste of valuable air time.
The show is what Kansas City needs and i feel that Mz. Shai has done a good job with what she has done with the show, the formating the music etc. The majority of the show is dope and should be something for the community to rally behind and support.
However.....it's hard to take any show serious with someone dumbing down the show. Maybe i could Mr. Luv on a really bad night...and i hope that is the case.
I just want to see this show succeed and surpass the old fame of Massive Mondays and i think that it's should be a professional as any commercial radio station. I think that Mr. Luv's lack of talent would turn off potential listeners and supporters such as myself.

I like the music, but the content of conversation and the hosts struck me as very unprofessional. I can see what sike meant by "cringe."
Good tunes tho

I actually agree with the other two to an extent. I think Mz. Shea does her job very well. On the air she is a good conversationalist, descriptive and well enough spoken. I have no personal bias against Lonnie Luv, but the dialogue was uninteresting to me. It sounded arbitrary. What the show could really use, easier said, is a real radio personality. You know, no inside jokes, just speaking to the listeners about the music, interested in what's going on in the area and conveying that to our hiphop scene. And I'm not talking about somebody from any click, or somebody representing any one style of hiphop/rap, but somebody who is interested cross/genre and in hiphop in general. Kiz, I kind of wish I heard you more on there. As a dj I know you have knowledge about cuts and artists that I would be really interested to hear. I wouldn't want anybody cut from the show, just to have it more structured. More substance. Otherwise, keep it up. For the most part I'm hype about it, and I think its a great gift you give to our underground artists by doing the show. Peace.

I lik ethe show and agree that it is important.
POSITIVES:
that you all ask the listeners/winners to repeat what station they are listening to, not many in the hip hop community know about kkfi and this reafirms its presence and create greater awareness.
that kiz actually mixes records
that Mz shai (sp?) is a positive, good personality
that it is on a weekend night
the music is diverse and shows all of hip hop
NEGATIVES:
the music in the dj mixes do have to be relevant to what people want to hear, its important to take them on a trip through the varieties of hip hop but scratching routines and beat juggling can draw listeners away, same goes for just breaks... that is unless it is pointed out as a demonstration of drum breaks. It may be hard to get all the newest hip hop/rap 12"s but I'd like to liosten to the show for the newest of the new music.
I agree the on air banter can be better, but its not that bad at all now. Although the contest "cupid" part of the leats show did seem to go on a bit long and the hosts didnt seem to know how it woulf be revealed, etc.
Could be on later, the 8-10 is a hard slot for radio, its more tv time.
It should take a position as the alternative to 103.3 which at this time has ZERO relevance to the hip hop music community of kansas city. This would provide the show with a platform to stand on and shout about. And people need to relealize what is going on with that: 103's lack of community support outside of "on location" car dealership satellites and such.
BUT OVERALL i love it and look forward to catching it again.

I would like to thank everyone that has given feedback on The Show-Me Mix Show. This will continue to be a work in progress and it will only get better as long as we have a s much feedback as possible. When I developed the show, I wanted to make sure the local artists had a media outlet and the listening audience could here some real Hip-Hop. We will continue to work out the kinks and make changes where necessary. Please continue to listen and spread the word about the show so that KC can get the recognition we deserve. Peace!

How should I begin....Where Should I begin. Well, First Off i'm proud of you. You seem to be venturing into an area that many have tried and failed at, but i'm sure that with your positive up beat, straight forward, professional attitude you're the perfect person to overcome the obstacles that others have failed at. Just Stay strong, focused and Keep up the good work.
Secondly.. and I know that i'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, but it seems that the main music genre that is being played seems to be leaning towards "eastcoast-hiphop style" mainly catering to the denial of needing "East Coast-West Coast Validation". What's this all about? Is this Just the D.J's personal taste in music? Question for the D.J? Since this show is to represent KC. Why not include more local artist in your mixes...??? (Maybe you do? I couldn't tell though)
Oh, by the way I can't believe that JoeGood lost to Godson. (I think it was a set up!!)

Whatz the deal Doc G
I just wanted to reply to your comments about playing a lot more local kats in the mixes and most of the joints are leaning toward east cost artist.
Well to be honest, I really don't play a lot of east coast artist. Most of the music that is played are from all over the country, but i guess that they have more of a east coast feel, as in lyrical content and not club type of joints i guess that could be the case.
I try not to play stuff that could be heard on other radio stations and tend to play the joints that you need to check for. The problem with trying to play other music such as gangsta and what not is that finding them with good content and radio playable material, and on wax since that is what i use on the show, so you will hear fcuk up's and records skip'n and what not.
I believe that is what makes the show what it is, an orange amongst apples. When you listen to the show you come to expect something different which is what we are after. We are not trying to be the krunkest show in kansas city, but a differnt show, that offers a view from the unsung. I am not totaly aginst krunk, gangsta hypey, etc... It's just finding good material.
Mz Shai mos def handels the local groups that will send in a clean radio version because that is what the show is about supporting the local area as much as possible, but she will have standards as to what she will play.
So Doc G by all means please send in something, enter the battle, or maybe try to set up an interview to be on the show. Your from KC so as far as i'm concerned your la famila, lets make it happen.

Hey Doc G!
Thanks for checkin' out the show and your feedback is much appreciated.
Yes, I have your music and should be playing it very soon. I generally like to give the whole group a chance to check out the music that's submitted. Although the show is my responsibility, I try to see to it that everyone has some input on what is played on the show.
As far as Kiz's choice in music, I strongly feel that he keeps plenty of variety in the mix. Variety not only in style but era. Kiz does the old school thing and he can flip it to the current hip-hop. Because of his vast knowledge of hip-hop and overall hands-on expertise, I tend to make sure Kiz has room to be creative, therefore, completely trusting his judgement.
Our goal with regard to local talent is to not only show love to the independent, unsigned local artist as a whole but to give artists a platform that would not otherwise be available...as far as radio airplay is concerned. Particularly focusing on those artists that actually have lyrical content with substance. Hip-Hop has lost focused in that area. God forbid a rapper actually have something thought provoking to say.
None the less, we are always making adjustments and improvements where we can. Keep providing music and feedback. Being on once a week with 2 hours puts a real time crunch on how much we can do. But we do what we can with what we have and strive for other opportunities.
Take care and keep in touch.

I might have just missed it, but it seems like the songs and artists being played weren't usually identified before or after the playing of their music. At least not that I heard. I think it's important to make sure that people know exactly what they're hearing or else there's no point in playing it.

Yeah i know i'm a super critic...but only cuz i wanna see this show last...
There seems to be a llotta talking about nothing...(actually it was all about C_HORN this last show maybe that's because KIZ was out)
i think that the chatter can be reconstructed into sections..
for instance...
A hip-hop news segment....like what happended this week in hip-hop past and present might be interesting for listeners to hear.
A show report...where are ppl performing and when....you don't have to say the costs or a ton of info...just let ppl know what's going on around town so they can participate in the scene.
Maybe a review of shows...albums etc.... that type of thing...short sweet to the point and then play the track...
The most important thing is always the music....keep it pumpin'!
thanks SHOW ME MIX SHOW>>

regarding the talking about nothing or making what you say count
2 hours of air time is really a good bit of time to convey informative, quality, useful information to the public's ears. focusing on your intent and structure can usually insure that important stuff gets across
makes me think of a marketing/presentation thought based on how to get people to hear you that goes:
tell them what you're gonna tell them THE PREPARING OF A PLACE
tell them what you have to tell them THE FILLING OF THE PLACE
tell them what you told them THE RECAP OF WHAT IS IN THE PLACE
most folks require at a minimum of 10 chances of hearing an idea before it registers.
probably the most annoying thing that happens on a lot of radio shows and during in person conversations is that most everyone is talking at the same time and I can't really hear anything, anyone or retain any information.
I love miles davis for many reasons, one was his understanding of what it really takes to hear and feel (digest) the notes and their meaning.

I think the show is a nice foundation for "local" artists. I may be the wrong person to speak on it, but the show has definitely helped the Soul Servers get our name out further and quicker (around the area) than we had been able to in the past. It's also provided an outlet for our music to actually be heard on air. We've been sending KPRS music for years with no response other than "We're not here to break artists" or "That's not selling enough units for us to consider playing it." At least now there is the forum for us as a hip-hop community to decide for ourselves what we do and don't want to hear. I applaud the fact that Shai, Kiz, and Lonnie have bucked the system. The show's not perfect, but it's definitely viable.

AM and online both sound good to me. I only listen to 90.1KKFI on FM (plug here: The Show Me Mix Show Saturdays 8p.m.- 10p.m.), and occasionally some 101KCFX (Classic Rock). Any other time, it's AM. But, I'm very intrigued by the thought of doing something worldwide. Let's take the city to them!

I honestly don't think a radio station of our own would do us any good. A radio station targeted at people who, as of now, generally don't listen to the radio, would not be effective in gaining new fans. The point of having your music on the radio is to gain new fans and sell records. If we have a radio station that plays mainly underground KC hiphop, the listeners will be us and the fans we already have. I think the direction we're headed in now is the right one. KKFI already has a diverse demographic and a lot of listeners.
Also, AM can only broadcast in Mono sound.

seems like getting heard is not the issue then (myspace, cdbaby, soundclick and others solved that ), getting played on fm (good sound) and the folks who hear what fm plays ie( soundscan, nielson, etc) + the public is
got it

Sorry i got to this kinda of late.
Work has been kick'n my A@# lately.
but i wnated to chime in on a few things.
Thanks for all the support for listening to the station, i trully believe that if there wasn't you there would be no us. I really like the feedback here man, i can not stress enough that it really builds the show up more as we want to be the best that we can.
After reading the thing about the radio station, i have to agree, as i would love to have a radio station 100 percent. As I was thinking about this every since i was a little kid. But the thing that turned me off was that in reality it would cause upwards of 1 million dollars just to get it started.
The real cost of it is just getting the ok from the FCC. there would have to be a lot of greesed palms to make it happen. Which is a long up hill battle, trust, i tried. I did a cost project on it when i was in school, i got my head out of the clouds real quick!! LOL LOL
As reach stated FM is locked up well, at least here in KC. You can't get in on here at all unless you are buying a station out, which would be hard as hell, because the way that clear channel , cunmmis(sp?) and one more big radio company are snatching up all the radio stations and turning the formats to all the same thing. That is why I believe that most heads are looking for something else( satalite, pod cast, community, internet ) are the wave of the future as in NOW!!!
I know that it is hard to get some joints on the radio, but it can happen. The best thing to do is to get your music encoded for BDS!
What BDS does is they encode your muisc with a small tone that you can not hear through the radio or even on CD. but what it does is that it send this tone to BDS machines and tracks how many times your song has been played on the air. the thing is to get your music encoded and played on stations the report BDS.
BDS is a tool for you to get more spins on different radio stations throught out the country. EX. You have your song played onKKFI and KPRS, and MIX95. Ok each channel is, say playing your song at least 3 times a week, whiich equals about 36 times a month. You can use your BDS report to start getting plays in other markets. Because now you have facts to support your claims that it's killing here in KC.
That is way sometimes you hear songs on KPRS that are crappy but the reason that they are playing the song is because they are getting crazy spins somewhere else. It's not becuase KPRS really like Laffy Taffy, It 's just that they are killing it somewhere else.
Radio is mos def about sale'n ad space, so if a song is hot and KPRS picks it up and adds it to rotation your more ap to listen to it so the more people that are listening to it the more they can sale ad space.
So please if your working an album are planing on releasing one soon, go get it encoded, it's free,.all you have to do is send it in. But it will cost you to read your stats. but the cost is well worth it. Becuase it will give you an idea of where your song is being played and what market is really feeling you, so that you can plan a tour around where your song or cd is doing great.
Ok it's getting late i want to get at least 6 hours sleep.
PEACE

I knew a guy that got his start, locally, in the sports talk arena by renting time from a radio station.
That may be a way to start.
He got local advertisers to pay his costs and later got his own spot on the AM dial. I'm not suggesting we do an AM format. This is just an example.
