*In his best David Alan Grier [i:cc072073a2]Men On Film[/i:cc072073a2] impression* Hated it! I'm (not) surprised that Hollywood is still typecasting Black actors. Let me see if I've got this straight... Hancock, the very Black superhero played by megastar Will Smith, just so happens to be a homeless, lazy, foul-mouthed, misogynistic, misanthropic, irreverent, anti-social alcoholic. Brilliant! If that weren't enough... Only the messianic Jason Bateman (who for all intents and purposes was a shabby PR guy according to the film) was capable of civilizing the savage beast known as John Hancock. And his redemption process, of course, began behind prison walls. Genius! Add in a phantom kiss that Smith (never) planted on his superhero wife (Theron) and the fact that he has to stay away from her to avoid the two of them becoming mortals... And I'm wondering if this script was adapted from some film in the 40's. And in case you think I'm just bumping my gums... Google "Mickey Mouse & The Boy Thursday". The film itself, racial undertones aside, is funny but aesthetically doesn't make a blip on the radar for the Superhero genre. It's something to do on a Saturday night, but nothing to write home about.

I didn't exactly catch this as being a film to propose a super-hero. If so, that's a sad debut. I was a skeptic at first and I must say that the ads were ambiguous, to say the least. But for what it was, the movie was great. I get that point though.
