So what about that Power & "White" district oops i mean that ... you know what I mean . I am so tired of hearing about another place blk folks cant go I mean there are the chosen few who can act out (everyone has a cousin that they dont like taking no place) but for the most part we like to hang out, crack jokes, I know a little bit about the "Hills" and they dont get harassed by the police while sitting in a public park. I know im not the only who sees this !@$! and im tired man.

The hills?......cause all white people are rich and on fake tv shows?
The thing about white people never getting harassed is a joke too...especially youngsters.
I grew up skateboarding and running from and dealing with the cops was an everyday thing. My generation didn't have all the skateparks you see today, but we helped get them and it wasn't by mentioning our skewed views of the cops, security guards, business owners, etc........
I have been harassed in more than one public park and it must be because life is so damn hard and the world is against me because I'm white.........
Good rule of thumb -don't judge another man until you've walked a day in their shoes

i cant go cause all my pants are too baggy and i dont buy new clothes...rather buy cigarettes and enough food to live off of...its a rich person thing, not a white person thing....most are white, ill give you that...but it doesnt help me get in any easier

thats all, I am not defending the Power & Light District, fuck em, most corporate driven entertainment districts are prejudiced / racist as far as I have heard, Westport, The Plaza, and now this area, so you say .
The world is fucked and unbalanced, I don't have any answers thats for sure, I just wondered what happened to you specifically so that I could form an informed opinion .

This is no race issue. It's fucking business. Places just don't want bum-ass mofos driving away their clientelle. They have an investment to secure. You want to go there, dress appropriately. You don't want to dress appropriately don't go there. I personally don't, so I don't.
The times I've been there, whites maybe were predominant, but not by a large margin. I've only been there a couple times, but I saw plenty of color, all well dressed and enjoying their damn selves.
I know racism is still an issue, but a lot of times it's a scapegoat for people who act crazy and want something to blame other than themselves.
And if I'm being insensitive, tnalverio, or reading it wrong, help me understand what exactly happened that they made you to feel black people are not welcome in the P&L District.
- Apr 3, 2008 05:33pm by phism
i do think there's underlying racism in it. but that's nothing new in kansas city. there's maybe half a dozen bars from waldo to the city market, between about troost and state line, that you can really forget you're not white in.
i'm more offended by just about any place that has a dress code. and maybe even by minorities who get all whited up so they can go try to bag sorority chicks or whatever. i don't get people.
so i don't plan to spend money there. maybe at the peach tree, but i'm mad at them for leaving the jazz district.

Nah Lucid speaks the truth.
The dress code applies to all races. What is this shit? Cats want to run prosperous businesses, that successfully generate profit. Remember what happened upstairs at The Peanut? Not saying that it was a race thing, but I guarantee a dress code, or a tighter knit security system could have prevented that melee from happening.
Since when are white people the only people who dress appropriately? Hell most of the fashion and nice dress styles of this generation come from black clothing designers/ fashionistas.
It's not a black or white thing. It's a don't bring your raggity, 2 bit no money having ass into my business and disrupt my customers thing. White, black, latino, whatever. If I run a business, you follow my rules of dress, and do not ruin the experience for my other customers.
Same reason that I think the smoking ban is bullshit. Motherfuckers act like these businesses are government funded places that everyone should be free to roam around in and not follow rules.
These businesses are owned by people like you and me. The smoking ban fucks their profit up, just like not being able to enforce a dress code fucks their profit up.
It's business.

It's crime they want to curb.
And that has nothing at all to do with apparel. The dress code was relaxed for the Big 12 Tournament. And there were no incidences.
Oddly, the standard dress for such tournaments includes many of the items they outlaw otherwise.
I'm wondering why that is...
And I find it interesting that many of the baggy pants-wearing bums they're trying to keep out are helping to finance this project, but aren't allowed to enjoy it.

[quote:56fe312c00]
Imagine a young man is stopped by a police officer on his way to work. What illegal act has he committed? Did he carelessly jaywalk? Was he walking with an open container?
No. Instead, the officer pulled the man aside because he was wearing baggy pants.
This could happen if Atlanta City Council members pass legislation that would penalize people who wear clothes that expose their underwear. Councilman C.T. Martin wrote the original legislation to ban baggy clothing last August with hopes of bringing the issue into public debate.
And the public has responded with strong conflicting viewpoints.
This baggy-pants debate has received considerable national media coverage. Dr. Phil himself recently addressed the issue on his daytime TV show. Twelve states, including Georgia, are in favor of banning such revealing clothing. Atlanta council members may vote on the legislation next month.
Talk of possible violations for such controversial clothing have included fines up to $100 and community service hours.
I am a conservative dresser myself and such legislation would not affect me. But as an informed citizen and a staunch believer in freedom of expression, I must voice how I feel about this clothing catastrophe.
Those of us who have chosen journalism as our calling in life know the First Amendment. I know that besides our freedom to exercise religion and our right to petition, Americans have freedom of speech, or freedom of expression.
In other words, we have the right to drive whatever type of car we choose or wear our hair any style we prefer. This freedom also allows us to express ourselves through the clothing we choose to wear each day.
Legislation that would penalize someone for wearing sagging pants is blatant assault on a person's freedom of expression. A person's choice of clothing - and how they wear that clothing - is a right with which every American is endowed. An attempt to restrict such expression would be like robbing the flag of its stars.
And where do Atlanta City Council members plan to draw the line?
On their crusade to establish a proper dress code for the citizens of Atlanta, will they next ban low-cut tops that reveal cleavage? Short shorts? Tight-fitting jeans? Once they choose to penalize people for certain attire, it's a slippery slope toward banning anything and everything that meets disapproval.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution quoted Martin in "How low? Atlantans get a saggy pants forum," (Jan. 15) on his disapproval of baggy pants that reveal boxer shorts and his belief this attire will "take you nowhere. It's not going to get you a 3.8 grade-point average. It's not going to get you a high-paying job ... It's a distraction. It's also disrespectful to older women."
Don't judge a book by its cover.
What we choose to wear to class each day is a reflection of our personality, our character. Or maybe you just throw on the only clean thing in your closet. Many times I have rolled out of bed in my pajamas and worn them to class. Did I perform worse on tests as a result? The answer is no.
Either way, the clothes individuals wear are no indication of their intelligence or promise as future professionals.
For those who choose to support such legislation, I ask you this: Would you feel comfortable if the government told you how to dress each day? Probably not.
The solution to the issue lies not in the legislation but in the respect we as human beings have for each other. It's your freedom to choose the type of clothing you wear each day, but it also is your responsibility to have respect for yourself and for others around you.[/quote:56fe312c00]

i agree totally... the tax payers have no dress code to pay taxes... i understand the whole business aspect of the dress code and respect it but there is a much bigger issue here.
most of the lofts and other housing in downtown comes with a 20 to 30 year tax abadement... meaning the people that are spending a mil on a loft dont have to pay property taxes on it for 30 years. Now that loft sells for a mil and drives up the surrounding property values and thus taxes of the mainly minority people that have been living there since the "white flight". that is fucked... also talk to some of the artists in the crossroads district who are being screwed by this same thing.
why are the people that can afford to pay taxes let off at the expense of the people that have inhabited the area for decades. i understand they are trying to "revitalize" the city etc and entice people to live downtown but at what cost??

the reason we most of us keep asking you if something happened to you is because of the way you wrote your first statement of this thread!
I was watching an independent lens last night about the show was centered around the numbers that black women are 10 times more likely to deliver prematurely that any other race in america. well needless to say, that got my attention.
I taped this show somewhat in disbelief and out of some desperate need for validation for the reality of racial discrimation's REAL IMPACT on black people in america
I know everybody feels "hated on" these day by the establishment so you will never find me trying to prove anything to anyone about systemic racism targeting african american people in america. whatever you think is fine with me. but here was a show that flat out stated that the stress of constant discrimination was the only different factor researchers found in premature birth numbers in all middle class woman in american culture.
having to bear this invisible (no longer acknowledged my words) systematic phemonenon creates a constant state of stress, the hormones from which equal " something equal to a state of fear" multiplying this by 20 years and well you get the gist. what I didn't know is that starting with the early stages of pregnancy, simuliar stress hormones start and grow as your pregnancy progresses until your delivery.
what the researchers are saying is that african american women are already producing stress hormones equal to the level of fear, then become pregnant and the body goes into normal stress mode and tada premature delivery waiting to happen. double the stress hormones
So they went further to prove this by tracking the new immigrant hispanics who when they arrive in this country, keep to their native habits and flourish and increase in their level of heatlth not seen by the family members they leave behind in mexico. but, after five years this starts to change why
discrimination that plain old feeling unwanted starts to erode away they family closeness that created the shield against fear, kids start to americanize, resist parents guidance, both parents must work 11/2 times the 8 hour a day to provide substandard living environment on and on until their protective habits are gone and they are face to face with being needed and unwanted at the same time and their health starts to decline
wow at 54 I am not crazy, racism does exsist and is slowly killing me
felt like it just couldn't explain that feeling and now a day everybody is just tired of this convo and want to move on does this change anything, not really, but I'm not crazy
funkadilics had a song called america eats its young it also eats its minorities whether "WE" want to talk about it any more or not. it especially eats women.
thanks for your time, we now return to our regularly scheduled programming

I think you're oversimplifying.
The Cordish dresscode sans the outlawed items still doesn't exactly spell out attire that gives the impression that the wearer is of the monied lot. Slimmer jeans and polos don't exactly give the impression that the person bearing them is affluent.
- Apr 4, 2008 07:51pm by Lucidialect
The generalizations adhered to by businesses when making making these rules are substantiated by the money they make. This ain't necessarily right or wrong, though it can be either.
But why be so shocked? This hints at a larger issue, but just the P&L District being what it is shouldn't be surprising to anyone. As an issue, it's a twig on a branch, far from the trunk.

i've saw on another site where alonzo washington is talking to the people about the dress code for the area. It might change soon, like everything else money is the driving factor.

Sorry, it was in context to Reach's response to me earlier. Didn't realize I'd be pioneering a new page.
Reach said:
[quote:6e0027e243]The Cordish dresscode sans the outlawed items still doesn't exactly spell out attire that gives the impression that the wearer is of the monied lot. Slimmer jeans and polos don't exactly give the impression that the person bearing them is affluent.

So I said:
[quote:6e0027e243]The generalizations adhered to by businesses when making making these rules are substantiated by the money they make.
[/quote:6e0027e243]
And my last statement,
[quote:6e0027e243]But why be so shocked? This hints at a larger issue, but just the P&L District being what it is shouldn't be surprising to anyone. As an issue, it's a twig on a branch, far from the trunk.[/quote:6e0027e243]
...was meaning that this isn't really about racism, though it's about a larger issue of inequality that has racism tied into it's history. The issue is about a business/district policy that is much more concerned with the appearance of class and financial status than race.
That's all.

Necia, people are inherently flawed, right?. Regardless of one's color, gender, or position in life, they suffer the same imperfections as everybody else.
Right or wrong, there's logic guiding these policies/actions. The same logic that formed these rules are of the same bloodline as those that bred racism. A twig on a branch that grew from a tree that another branch grew from. But it's a different branch.
My point; I see this as an issue of generalizations regarding investments, and marketing demographics based on economically determining iconography, such as clothes, watches and shoes.
But, how exactly is this about "racism"?
I think there's a bigger issue here, and categorizing it as "racism" is underestimating it. That's all.

A conversation on racism is fairly pointless because everybody has firm opinions on it that will not deviate in the matter of a discussion.
It takes an individual effort to eradicate it and some people who complain about it the loudest are the very same people who make no effort to look in a mirror and see that they are exacerbating the problem.
Making your point through intelligent statements is one thing. Making your point by generalizing policy-making establishment through a grand total of six photographs of white douchebags or mentioning "The Hills" is hypocritical.
Fighting the fire with fire doesn't work with this issue.
I'm sorry, I just don't seem to have a sense of humor anymore.

I haven't experienced the p&l district first hand yet, but from the convo what I'm gathering is that there's some seriously questionable bull$h!t going on. That's really depressing. I got a homie up here who's also from KC and we were talking about how dope it was gonna be to come back and see the sparks of developement downtown... you get the rest.

I believe it's only certain bars in the courtyard that have the dress code. Ya know what, 30-40 something people shouldn't be saggin when they go out to a nice place in my eyes. There is a time and a place for dressing casual or dressing "cool". Whatever these kids are calling it now a days 😉 Even tho i'm not there I think it's finally great that someone did something with that area. If they left it the way it was people would still be comlaining they are not doing anything for the community.. yadda yadda. If you don't like it don't go. I personally saw in the 2 days I went there all types of people eating and having a good time.
Meh...take what you will from it.
*edit to add*
There are so many hot clothing lines out there now, you don't need to wear baggys and your flyest kicks to look good.

Where I'm coming from.....
Don’t know if you call it a revelation or an epiphany, but it all came to me so
Clear. I was thinking about how so many people on the site were complaining about
Race and how "WE" are not allowed t o visit the Kansas City Power and light District,
As "ourselves". Baggy jeans and excessive jewelry id not accepted, this has in turn
Created diversities in my city. For some reason people who hang out with each other,
And tend to per-say "know" my culture are divided on this issue. Some feeling that
it is race or economic status, while some wash it off as mere business tactics to keep
their place of business somewhat "upscale" the facade of the whole matter is
Neither one of these cultures exist because the district resides in a city that is
Neither posh nor lush. everyone in Kansas city is fucking poor. I’ve heard people
From Raytown, diss people from Lees Summit, while people from Overland Park diss
people from Merriam, People from Wyandotte diss people from Parkville, People from Lenexa diss people from Missouri. People from Missouri diss Kansans. Peoole from Chicago diss Kansas City.
I don’t get you people. Why is there this competition?
Recently in Kansas City a district opened up that includes entertainment, food, sports, and concerts. They have a dress code that enforces anti-hood wear. Anything basically associated with Hip Hop culture. Not Black Culture or Reglar Hip Hop. But rugged Hip Hop, like Bling, Chains, Baggy jeans, or anything Hyphy. did I say violent? no? good.
This rule, Law, or, ordinance has created a huge b.s. discussion among the community. the sad thing is that nobody in this per-say community realize that they have began to tear each other apart, hence the issue. There have been no talks on how to organize protest for freedom of expression. or how this company came out of a city that don’t even have One professional sports team to call its own. No talks of how the Bar B que that is served there has a nasty ass sweet sauce that niggas don’t even love. And mind you when I say niggas I mean Black and White!
Another issue that needs to be addressed. Here is a foot note for yo ass. I got all kind of niggas. Let me peep you to a convo I know my man Blam won’t mind me sharing.
Dutch Newman and I were at the Koncrete Kids spot. We were having a discussion about the use of the word nigga, and if it was appropriate for Blam to use it. Blam is from Colombia. It explained to him that if it was us three in the car and we got pulled over and the cop said get out the car nigga, and he didn’t move he would’ve got shot. This was the whole explanation of the reason why he could say that word.
On the other hand, I have white friends that would have jumped out of the car before me. Defended me and whatever we might have done, and used their "white" powers to protect me. Not fucking around.
I’ve seen cops show up at parties once even twice and leave without even stepping a foot in the door or seeing the many minors inside the Johnson County huge ass house with underage, unprotected, cocaine, ecstasy, special-K, oh don’t forget the alcoholic, sex going on in the parents waterbed!
Nobody wants to talk about race? I will talk about status. Its poor people they don’t want in the Light district not black. they want to make it like Rich people hang out, uncle toms, conservative negroes, rich black folk are more than welcome. as long as you guffaw, guffaw and chuckle chuckle, chuckle, right along with them you’re goods. Stop playing yourself. real niggas (my people, rep Hip Hop, love my culture, have nothing to prove, don’t even worry about the color of their skin, many black friends, as well as White, Latino, maybe even African, Laotian, or Irish. (How come white people don’t call themselves European American)
? Just wondering. no I’m not, I’m an instigator.
Nobody gets it. They want us to be divided. They feed on it!
I will peep you to one last topic.
This past week was the first First Friday that was nice. Now First friay has been a huge event in Kansas City, Mo. for some time. Its a way to get the artsy people out in Kansas city. The point i am going to make, I will tell you now.
All of those artsy farsty people that visit the galleries and who patronize the art. Don’t give a fuck about the power and light district. They don’t go there because they don’t accept that crowd either. Think.
Artist...
Poor....
Punk...
Emo....
Goth...
They don’t want these people. They want the people coming Downtown, who have no clue about culture. That’s why when a certain group that was down there on this first Friday, got the crowd hype.
I have been trying to tell people for the longest time that First Fridays is a great exposure outlet. I was so Pissed at Breaking James when He finally went down there. I’ve been telling him to go for the last three years. It our time.
I wish I could’ve been there Friday. I heard Soul Providers turned it out. I wish I was there to tell you that I am a part of that community too. And that as long as your lyrical expression is family friendly, the ART District will always let you rock the mic. Nobody cares. I’ve done it down there many times.
We don’t need a District we have one. We just need to capitalize. We will take over the Light district in time. They can’t hold us back forever. Especially when they see the $$$$$$ we have.
You are not missing anything.
Do you think places like the Music Foundation was established because they couldn’t get enough stage time at Kelly’s?
We got our own thing.
They Like Tag Team and Rob Base. We Love UGK and Pete Rock and CL Smooth.
So why do you wanna kick it with them and listen to Kanye?
That’s mediocre, are you afraid of hanging out with "real" niggas, in real nigga clubs? (I know this i'snt the case)jk..... well then you need to check your culture, cause "you lookin real unfamiliar" gunn jakc
huh?
stop stressing
and again stfu
stop bitchin. enjoy life.
mostly, everybody here is my nigga!
Im just venting, yes im drunk. I just dont want anymore division, its been such agood year for "US" (KC). I just want to keep building. I’m shedding tears right ow, real talk...because of some stoopid shit that we don’t even need. and its creating division while "they" smile, point, laugh, and careless.

Ace for someone who was drunk you make a lot of sense 😀
Of course it's about how "rich" you are not the color..in some cases
don't get me wrong. But you just don't show up to the Bristol in torn
up jeans and a dirty sweatshirt. It's sloppy man.
The scene there has grown in the past 10 years, you have to do your
part to keep it movin no matter what or it's not going anywhere.
You have a whole group of artists, musicians, DJ's, you need to stick together and not worry about if you can get into a bar that is not going
to play the music you want to hear anyways 😆
The place is open to everyone I think people need to get it in their heads they are not stopping anyone from enjoying a nice time there, from Bowling to the Sprint Center. If you go in with an attitude just to cause trouble because you don't like what they have done, of course
you won't have a good time.

wHATS SO Fkin stoopid is that you've missed the intelligent dialog betweeen peers, and lumped the whole topic into one thread, being clouded and blinded by my "clowness" , my fodder for the site.

Cordish runs the risk of financial failure if they don't use perception-based security measures? Come on. The new smell of the Power & Light district alone makes it a lucrative venture for at least the next 6-12 months.
[quote:ef47da63a2]But why be so shocked?[/quote:ef47da63a2]
I'm never shocked by it. This is Kansas City.
There are still restrictive covenants on the books in some neighborhoods.
It's never surprising when discriminatory practices take place...
It's Tuesday.

Nah, Reach, you're right. They're in about as much in danger of losing money by not policing apparel as the U.S. was in danger of getting attacked by Iraqi's had we not gone over there to protect ourselves.
I know I play a lil devil's advocate, and for reason, but I don't want to confuse anyone into thinking I'm okay with all this. I just feel it's important to understand the mind of those that I consider in loose terms to be the enemy.

But, how exactly is this about "racism"?[/quote:3131659192]
Cordish will never, of their own volition, express any animus towards African American people. If that's the kind of substantiation claims of racism require we'll never make any progress.
Again, we know that one's fashionable expression has nothing at all to do with criminal intent. And I think it's safe to say who is being targeted by the outlawed items on Cordish's dress code. So if that's NOT what the dress code is seeking to stave off...what's left?

With all due respect have you been down there yet? Have you been in any of the restaurants for dinner or lunch with family? I mean If you haven't maybe you should, it should be a nice experience to go somewhere new for a change. KC was looking pretty desolate for years.
I saw plenty of people in there that were dressed casual with sports
gear and plenty of people of colour working as well.
I think people forget this is also is a great thing for jobs in KC.
If you are into that type of scene then it's for you.
@Reach, I completly agree with your opinions about the topic, for years I have seen what happens when new places open and they want a certain clientele.
You either agree with it or you don't. Nothing wrong about expressing your opinion and frustration about it. But people have to take what they will when posting on a message board, things can come across the wrong way.
We also have a voice there are plenty of outlets to discuss and protest the decision for what they are doing. It's all on the person. For me it's about being neutral with this, with the bad should be the good.
I have seen that area for over 20 years go downhill, it was time for someone to step in and rebuild. Now if they only can focus on Westport coz they need to take a broom and mop to that place, jeez it's a mess... 😆
**EDIT TO ADD** Luc, where in the P&L did you get turned away?
Form one of the clubs or the restaurants?

That we're all crazy conspiracy theorists seeking to gain something from touting these hair-brained ideas that racism STILL exists in a town where restrictive covenants are on the books to this day?
Are you serious?

In my most humble opinion.
No one is saying racism isn't alive and well in kansas city, I believe it is just a bit paranoid and at some point becomes a self fulfilling prophecy if you look for it at every turn.
Many of the things that aren't allowed are sports related attire, so during that big sports event, they were lenient so as to accommodate sports fans and the pride shown through wearing such attire.

Unfortunately I'm not afforded those opportunities to look the other way and take the day off. I'm reminded everyday. I envy anyone who can do that though. I WISH it wasn't there myself, but that's not the world we live in. There's nothing at all paranoid about Blacks being kept out of certain neighborhood in this town to this day. What tangible evidence have you given that suggests that this isn't coded language? The fallacy that a dress code curbs violence? The fallacy that someone's fashionable expression has anything to do with criminal intent? The fallacy that a patron sans the sweats, bandanas, baggy clothing and work boots gives the impression that they are affluent? You're not asking for tangible evidence. You want a statement from Cordish that expresses animus towards African American people. A statement Cordish will NEVER make.

What tangible evidence have you given that suggests that this isn't coded language? The fallacy that a dress code curbs violence? The fallacy that someone's fashionable expression has anything to do with criminal intent? The fallacy that outlawing sweats, bandanas, baggy clothing and work boots gives the impression that the wearer is affluent?
Sorry to jump in here, but the actual language (not the coded language)clearly states the intent of the dress code.
In other words why not listen to whats being said rather than looking for the code ?
Also, I cannot wear any of the above to work, and what about me getting told to leave SKYBOX, I dunno man, I have seen that I cannot wear the aforementioned to the aforementioned places, it all seems to lead me to believe that the dresscode is simply the dresscode.
Also, isnt it the store owners right to refuse service to anyone for any reason in Missouri, so why would they need to use the guise of a dress code to keep a certain race out ?

I can't take that at face value because I know full well that a patron in violation of the Cordish code still doesn't connote criminal intent.
[quote:4a7344002d]Also, I cannot wear any of the above to work[/quote:4a7344002d]
I can and I work a very corporate job.
That's beside the point though. There's quite a thick line that separates leisurely activities and your livelihood.
[quote:4a7344002d]and what about me getting told to leave SKYBOX, I dunno man, I have seen that I cannot wear the aforementioned to the aforementioned places, it all seems to lead me to believe that the dresscode is simply the dresscode.[/quote:4a7344002d]
What of it? That only suggests that the code doesn't have selective enforcement at that particular venue.
I'm confident the minority owners of Skybox weren't out to keep other minority patrons from setting foot inside their establishment.
[quote:4a7344002d]Also, isnt it the store owners right to refuse service to anyone for any reason in Missouri[/quote:4a7344002d]
Absolutely not. Kansas City taxpayers are responsible for $300 million of the downtown revitalization tab. That IS NOT private property.
[quote:4a7344002d]so why would they need to use the guise of a dress code to keep a certain race out ?[/quote:4a7344002d]
Because they can't say it plain terms. You and I both know that.

deal with that first then think what we all may want is to have our truth heard without having to fight about it.
there is no way a white person in america will ever understand what african americans have suffered I'm ok with that as long as white amercians don't try to justify this. Its' ok to be offended, repulsed, angry, tired of , ashamed bout it, confused whatever, but YOU cannot explain this fact away period. stop this
here is where it gets fun
I will never understand what white privlege feels like as long as I am me in my current package. I have empathy for whites who have been told of their entitlement to a certain life but are discriminated against by a class system that ensures they will always be too something to be considered for the REAL Prize.
poor, lower, middle and upper middle class.
I also think after years of whites being force fed RACE by all means possible, as a decider/separater it's not surprising to be denying racism while at the same time being and feeling like someone discriminated against and seen as undesirable. confusing huh? me too
why? cuz you are being discriminated against using the following sorters
age, education, income, politically orientation, gender, and more while at the same time enjoying privleges you are unaware of. the only way to become aware would be to admit the propaganda you have been subjected and overcome by

Don't take that for more than what it is, ya'll are always my peeps. I just hate feeling like, not only will I never understand, but you won't explain it to me. This is prolly for some one-on-one convo, so let's get up and I'll be all ears. Peaces.

I'm a million years late to this thread, but this is what I'd like to know:
Which city is getting cursed with the [i:746d52ab39]next [/i:746d52ab39]Cordish project? And do they have a large hip-hop contingent? Because there have been cookie-cutter Cordish projects springing up all over the US and everyone in each city gets all excited for the first ten minutes and then they realize that Cordish's predatory business practices are screwing local bar owners and the dress code is unfriendly to anyone who doesn't wear Brooks Brothers, and then they get all up in arms about it when it's TOO LATE.
Like us.
I'd like to find out who will get graced with Cordish's next beige block of craptasticness so we can inform that city's version of HipHopKC that they ought to oppose their tax increase with everything they have until they are assured that EVERYONE will be welcome to WhateverCityLive!
(As if.)

I am not a victim. Nor are you. Don't want you to get it twisted. upper middle class to poor white people just as duped by this system but in different ways. just cuz your cage is shiny bigger, special somehow doesn't make it any less a cage.
and lucid, thank you for your chat, it got me to this new place about these types of discussions especially on line.
I am happy you are so strong in your beliefs. Yes I walked away from our convo, cuz it was turning into a debate of opposing positions and I don't study war no more especially with friends. I want you to understand my life experience, but I will not debate my truth like its an intellectual discussion with proofs, theorums, and outlines. those approaches don't work for the heart
your latest comment sounded like you were feeling somehow victimized because no one will explain it to you. we have and I will again in person over a beverage without posturing and youthful arrogance lording over my truth ready to kill it like an enemy.
debate about race /gender/class/politics/sex in america = distractions from the real truth
real truth = we all playin a role to keep the status quo afloat ie all slaves in some aspect
as I said, I don't expect a white person to know shit about what its like to be black in america
what I do expect is respect for my truth whether you understand or not and if you really want to understand first step would be a question, followed by listening instead of some comment that say "nah you are wrong cuz that is thus and so NOT RACISM MAN" OR RACISM AND PROFILING IS NO LONGER PRACTICED IN AMERICA IE you are crazy it never happened so get over yourself
understand this I got no beef no where, just not gonna have people tell me my feeling any longer youth white inexperienced old hispanic you name it just no.
what I have lived is not some existinial exercize . I understand for me that will mean no more posting during these attempts at understanding via a forum.
I won't miss this at all.
willing to continue convos face to face anytime we can arrange it

Explaining would be an act of interpretation. You've debated, strung semantics the same as myself, but done nothing to really help me see eye to eye with you.
[quote:84cf10dcce]You had it set in your mind that this wasn't a racial issue from the outset.[/quote:84cf10dcce]
This was my first impression, just no one in this thread helped me see it differently.

I look forward to this, and I will check my arrogance at the door. I promise. Believe it or not, I can be a good listener. I wouldn't have intended the same tone I've had with others to be imposed on you, but it might well have happened. I get defensive, like the rest.
Sharing does a lot to help one understand another's perspective. Which is really what this is about, right? I had a good convo with Vert tonight. He helped me out a lot, simply by relating personal experiences he's had with racial discrimination, how they were similar to this, and painted me a heartfelt picture of what he's seen and why he believes what he does. I can see where Dirge is coming from. And that's the thing. From his perspective, experiences and such, I see why he feels the way he does. When I go back to my perspective I still see what I see. That's the spectrum of life I guess.
Next time, let's get up on some peace, love and understanding.
Good shit. Love you all, no lie, I'm out.

Just give it a thought weve all been hated on for one reason or another how did that feel all im sayin is Dont act like its not tru.
My grandmother is still timid and all fucked up behind the shit I dont wanna live in a world where Im scared to just be me what happened to freedom of expression, and the only way I can exercise that right is to be me, carmel skin and all. I noticed people walking away from the topic "For What" we need this type of energy it doesnt have to cause problems for us it just has to stir up enough ruckus for shit to change and I dont mean the P&L I still want places to go that are just for my kinda people. Damn im not tryin to make people mad but im tired of stayin in the house, scared to go to club cause I might get shot shit lol:)

I'm proud of the progress downtown is making. I will say, that for common folks, ESPECIALLY people UNDER 21, PLD is extremely uninviting; I hope not at the downfall of the effort. For God's sake, the bowling ally looks like a martini bar -- I think it IS.
Here's the answer to your question: Retail. It doesn't exist in the district. And as you may or may not know, alcohol can be expensive. Nobody wants to go to a bar everyday, unless they are 1) alcoholic or 2) have the means to support such an extravagant lifestyle. This can translate to some as "racism."...
Retail would solve this racism issue. Then, YOU of all people, would feel welcome to buy some clothes or whatever. I think this will be implemented soon -- they have no choice.
Also, BLAME the Cordish Groupwww.cordish.com. They're the head of everything and NO they are not from Kansas City. They are the developers.

I'm not sure if P&L can be called progressive if gentrification and the eradication of long-time tenants in the area is the result.

The presence of Retail won't change anything in the Power & Light District. If shops ever are ever incorporated into the area they'll be higher end retailers tailored to their ideal demographic.

I shouldn't have to own an establishment to complain about one.
Especially not since I'm a taxpayer who is helping to subsidize the cost of the Power & Light District.

Let's be real. There was nothing to be gentrified, bro. I mean, the area was almost abandoned. Now there are (and will be) thriving businesses. Now, obviously, people shouldn't be left behind. I'd be pissed as well, but gentrification in not a BAD thing, in all cases. UMKC bought ton's of houses on it's perimeter to expand. There was an uproar about that but good was created. The roots of that downtown area was decayed. Yes, a few people were probably booted, but I'm sorry some things must be taken away to reveal it's beauty.
My computer was stolen about 4 months ago. Yeah, I was pissed and upset, but man, has my inspiration never been so good. Now I have a fresh start.
Obviously the Cordish group didn't act alone but if you go to every city that the Cordish group is developing for, you will see the same imprint. It's a template, and to them, the template works. You're right, the high pinky cats right here in KC bent over for them. I'll recede my point there.
But, I disagree. Retail, when done right, is obviously fruitful. But there's ways for those who are opposed to the upper-class aura of the P&LD can act. Write a petition, protest on the steps of city hall, write a letter to the Mayor. If you're that compelled to speak against the development of it, be compelled to make it how you think is best. Our sense of urgency has been diminished by innate intimidations inspired by these mere typical business transactions.
Booker T. Washington was fed up with his people not having the right to read write and learn, and what did he do? Made small but profound steps to build his OWN vocational school. Now, everybody doesn't have to be a leader. But it takes a leader to follow. Booker T encouraged his students to go on actually, physically BUILD the school from the ground up.
You're right, you don't need an establishment to complain about one, but if you ever want a real change you need to act -- that's MY point. Complaints will be collected and extinguished with suave diction and maybe a coupon; a fist takes more effort to be stopped. It's time we quit putting a bandage over cancer and cut to the root of the issue.
One of my favorite quotes is "If you're going through hell, keep going." Why stop and merely observe the beating, complain and let it happen. Fight back. We need to stop the self-victimization and make real progress. Make something undeniable. Do it with passion. You do it all the time with good music.
And don't come at me with some canned authoritarian jabberwocky when all you were doing was trying to shut down MY input as well. If you're gunna dispute me, at least keep it real.
Peace & Progress-
PS: Much love.

Lol Nah actually. Someone bought it and it's supposed to be a "venue." You may know about that but I don't know how successful it is. I haven't been to a show there in a while. I had a show back in December of 07 and I went to one of Reach's shows there in like November, but from what I understand a group of guys throw college parties there often and it definitely fills up. I just wish they would step their sound game up a tad. It would be a nice spot.

Man, I do NOT want to re hash the same ol argument again, so first off I will say that I whole heartedly respect your opinion, you have every right to it.
And I realize that hip hop was born from predominately African American people,But I do take mild offense at the above statement simply because I was there when the global phenomenon saw its first sparks, I grew up with it, I was born in to it, IT IS MY CULTURE too, and I'm Caucasian.
No one questioned my participation, or adherence to the culture back when I was a kid on the block in 78 and 79.
No one should question it now.
I should also point out that the culture has also evolved.
The bulk of the consumers are non African American, so if if other races werent allowed to "participate" in the Culture it would eventually fail from lack of sales, I can find these statistics if you would like, but a little research and Google would yield you the same results as me.
Again, I mean no disrespect to you, I admire your passion, we can agree to disagree, Everyone can disagree with me about it being my culture, it wont change the fact that it is.

Gentrification effects more than the immediate areas surrounding the Power & Light District. People have absolutely been affected by the downtown revitalization project. I think residents (or former residents) of the Westside would attest to that.
[quote:08c531ca2a]Now there are (and will be) thriving businesses. Now, obviously, people shouldn't be left behind. I'd be pissed as well, but gentrification in not a BAD thing, in all cases. You can't draw a comparison between your computer and someone's home. And I'd imagine that if you had control over the situation you would never have chosen for that to happen. You just made the best of a bad situation. Which is what minorities and poor folks always do. That's beside the point though. The structures that contribute to these problems still must be examined.
[quote:08c531ca2a]But, I disagree. Retail, when done right, is obviously fruitful.[/quote:08c531ca2a]

[quote:08c531ca2a]You're right, you don't need an establishment to complain about one, but if you ever want a real change you need to act -- that's MY point.[/quote:08c531ca2a]
Real change starts in the heart.
Having an honest dialogue about the situation is much more valuable than you're willing to admit. Change doesn't always have to take on the form of public petition.
[quote:08c531ca2a]One of my favorite quotes is "If you're going through hell, keep going." Why stop and merely observe the beating, complain and let it happen. Fight back. I love the ideology that if I'm not standing outside of McFadden's with a picket sign in hand that I'm not qualified to speak on the matter. Honestly... I'm not interested in railing against corporate interests. I'm interested in stimulating minds and opening eyes. You won't find me protesting the P&L District publicly. Not my bag. No interest there.
I'm not a victim. I'm a tax-paying, law-abiding citizen of Kansas City, Missouri. Victim isn't an accurate word to describe who I am.
[quote:08c531ca2a]And don't come at me with some canned authoritarian jabberwocky when all you were doing was trying to shut down MY input as well. If you're gunna dispute me, at least keep it real.[/quote:08c531ca2a]
Canned authoritarian jabberwocky?
The nerve...
All I did from the outset was encouraged the open exchange of ideas from every poster interested in this conversation. If you'd just scroll back a bit you'll see that I delivered the very same message to Tnalverio. So you might wanna check that coat, fam. I'm not bent on the powers that have been bestowed upon me by Necia. But I do take that responsibility seriously and will absolutely speak up anytime it's necessary to protecting the house Necia built.
I have no interest in shutting anyone up...for any reason.
If that were my goal then all that would require is a rebuttal.
That's perfectly sufficient.
I'll say this again...
HipHopKC encourages open dialogue and the free exchange of ALL ideas irrespective of who brings them to the table. The free exchange of those ideas will be protected.

I understand your frustration, but we don't want this to become a one-sided conversation. You did create this thread, but it's still an open forum for all posters to post in.

I should also point out that the culture has also evolved.
The bulk of the consumers are non African American, so if if other races werent allowed to "participate" in the Culture it would eventually fail from lack of sales, I can find these statistics if you would like, but a little research and Google would yield you the same results as me.[/quote:da0b17d65a]
Hip Hop's longevity isn't dependent on record sales.
I'd venture to guess that you came to love the culture long before you knew what a Record Sale was...
I do have unique experiences that may be difficult to understand if you haven't lived them, but I do not believe the culture should be exclusive to any group of people. So I understand why that struck a nerve for you when T said it...BUT...At the same time... The culture doesn't need people to buy records to thrive.

The free exchange of those ideas will be protected.[/quote:dff6461e54]
Thanks for the props reach. As I have said as often as I can, This is the HOUSE WE BUILD TOGETHER! I mean this with all my heart.

Yesterday I read in the KC Star two articals about the P&L district and how they need to be more relaxed on the dress and how they have started recieving complaints from council members and other kansas city residents such as "me". In one artical the author says its like they turned on MTV and took note of what the rappers were wearing and said no no I wont have any of that. Thursday there was a city council meeting on the problem where a spokesperson danced around the issue never really addressing the problem so councilman Riley threatend not to back anymore of Cordish's plans for the future if this wasnt fixed.
The more I read the artical I am profoundly proud of the shit I started all it takes is one person and thanks to Mr Hendricks of the kansas city star everyone now knows downtown for being "The Power and White District"
Check the articals out . Im proud of us for talking shit cause now their listening and I aint done yet I gotta get the police out of Swope Park on Sundays and I dont even go there but they ass's gotta go (whoa wait a minute thats a whole new thread) Anyway thanks for reading, oh yeah almost forgot guys Im a girl

Don't really know if this means anything but I had some free time last saturday night and headed to the "Power & White" district to see what the hoopla was all about...
I really didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. They let me in with a tshirt and some jeans. My t-shirt said "I ate your soul" in a very noticeable graffiti style. I saw lots of "black people" in there grooving and drinking and having a good time. I ended up at Angels Rock Bar rocking out to some Deftones and shit.
I give the whole experience a 6 out of 10. Way too many people for me.
There you go. For what it's worth.

WOW! I haven't seen thread like this on here in a while..wish more people would have jumped in. Couple things, I disagree with dress codes, and feel they are inherently discriminitory. But it cannot be argued that in this countries worst school systems, dress codes(uniforms) have helped cut down on school violence and helped to raise overall gpa's in those districts. Granted this is not the purpose of the P&L'S dress code. Reach I agree with you that the tax payers who footed this massive redevelopment should be allowed in to any establishment wearing whatever they damn well please. These are the kinds of issues you run into when you have government (local, state, feds) funding private business's. Yes it is a private business, yet it was funded primarily with tax payer dollars, and at the sacrifice of many longtime local business'. But at what point are they subject to state and local laws concerning such matters as this, is it up to the business, the city council? These fucks get so many tax breaks and exemptions while pissing away money contributed by the public. That being said, wishing the P&L to fail is foolish, how else would the city get back the 300 mill invested into the project? That money is going to be needed in the years to come for the city to maintain itself, especially since federal money for state infastructure projects with start to disapear before too long. I just wanted to make a couple brief statements before I dip out for lunch..I will probably have more to add later as I process everybody's comments. I do think its very interesting to see some of yall's opinions are so different, even within our little community. Off to eat something deep fried. Back soon, keep posting.

Im gonna. the next time someone tells me to. Im gonna claim that its either my religion or I have a condition. I might even go as far as to say I just left Chemo, and tell them, "Now Im gonna commit suicide" Im about to take "victim" to a Whole nova level....
I've got a great disabled persons shtick, and you should see my deaf person impersonation.
Recently Ive just been saying, "Oh I see, you guys are afraid of the Hip Hop guys." or "Those damn gangsters always make it bad for regular black people." in my "ultra-white guy" voice, that gets people (clerks) irked. This one guy told me to leave, even after I took off my hoodie. He acted like he knew I didn't really talk that way.
I love messin with their heads. Its ridiculous. I walked into Royal liquor, and the security guard yelled as soon as I walked in, "Hood off! ...Hey take your hood off!" I wasn't even past the revolving gate yet and he was yelling. I gave him a dirty look and then looked at the cashier (who knows that I live in the neighborhood), she says, "Oh its you, take your hood down sweetie." I said okay and thank you for talking to me like a human being. The guard asked if I had a problem. the clerk said I was okay. but I could tell he still wanted beef.
I really wanted to flip him off when I was leaving. Toy Cop!
I said, "gee willikers, this is some awful shennigans!" on the way out, that made him threatin to call real police officer over, but I was in a b-line to the door, and turned and said and do what?
blah!

I don't have faith that the city's going to see a return on that investment anyway.
This was a political coup for KWB from the outset.
The city, in my humble opinion, never stood in danger of this project truly aiding it's infrastructure.

anyway, if this is over a dress code, just put a nice shirt on? I haven't been there and i don't know the underlying issues, but the old killem' with kindness shit usually works wonders, like everyone dress up and go up in there and if they still don't let you in then flip out? Nah, I agree. This was a very foolish investment to make. The entire project has taken it deeply in the ass in terms of profitable return.
Am I tripping, or is the project still unfinished and needed to basically be aborted because it was so high over budget?
Very, very idiotic move to fund this project.
However, I think you guys are beating this dress code thing up pretty hard. I don't really dig P&L, but only select bars/clubs enforce that dress code. Not even just the "hip-hop/rap" clubs. The frat boy clubs are just as bad. Several of those places don't even really enforce a dress code. And if they do, it's no different than the dress codes found anywhere else in the United States. I have been in P&L several times in jeans and a t-shirt, and the crowd I was with could easily be racially profiled.
I do agree that the dress codes have a racially motivated bent to them. But outside of that, there is no denying that dress codes serve a positive purpose. It weeds out undesirables (of any race) who aren't going to be doing anything more than pestering customers. (white/black/latin etc.) It also encourages people to bring manners and consideration to the establishment.
Cordish/P&L can go fuck themselves though. They would not let me play a concert there once they found out I was a hip-hop artist. They didn't want my crowd starting fights and robbing purses. 🙄

Which brings back up the question, as to why you would want to visit or entertain a place that is blind to their ignorance of a culture, and has no respect for you or what they think they know about you and your peeps?
It might not be [i:2624f4ad1d]just[/i:2624f4ad1d] racism, it could be just cultural bigotry. You don't have to give them your money. They are trying to put distance between themselves and us. They dont want to understand, or learn or hear. They just $ee $$$$nake$$$.

All of your money, in some way, shape or form is going to end up in the hands of people who have no respect or understanding for anything other than a deep, evil, corporate greed.
You live in America dude.
- Mar 11, 2009 12:21pm by dirge
Fuck that! Dress codes don't mean shit! Anyone over twenty one years of age who has paid taxes in Kansas City should be able to go downtown and be served in a bar. You paid for it!
Undesirables my ass. I can put on a nice shirt and still cause ruckus in a bar. That crap will never fly. Problems still happen. It has only (in my experience) been enforced by bar owners who deem their bars "too dark." Fuck that!
Where are all of the artists who lived downtown and kept it afloat before the corporate takeover?
Fuck five beans for a Bud Light. Fuck six for a Boulevard Wheat. The grocery store there is overpriced and understocked. Motherfuck the Power and Light District!

Good question Vert.
This shit is cyclical. Artists cluster in cheap, forgotten areas of a city. They develop work, display it, celebrate, birth culture, invite people from elsewhere to come partake, it swells, becomes popular, the city recognizes the popularity, decides to invest, in come the businesses, up goes the property value, out goes the artists.
And yeah, if I didn't say it a year ago and seven pages back, FUCK THE P&L!!

And yeah, if I didn't say it a year ago and seven pages back, FUCK THE P&L!![/quote:5a22aed66c]
Its happening all over he nation, its part of "The Plan".
American cities have gone through a massive wave of gentrification in the last few decades. To some people, it's not a natural ebb and flow of the real estate market, but a plot, by rich, mainly white people, to take over the neighborhoods of poor, mainly black people. This American Life producer Jon Jeter reports on how, in neighborhoods all over the country, the plot has a name, "The Plan," and most people you talk to know about it.

Im gonna. the next time someone tells me to.
Toy Cop!
I said, "gee willikers, this is some awful shennigans!" on the way out, that made him threatin to call real police officer over, but I was in a b-line to the door, and turned and said and do what?
blah![/quote:2cf21d6157]
The library one is ridiculous. I can see the liquor store though. Come the fuck on, you can't even wear a baseball hat into a bank in WA. Guess why? They get robbed... a lot.

I really wish it was as easy as saying "Just don't go."
But that fucking concentration camp of a bar takes up 95% of our city now. It's fucking HUGE, ugly, and fucks traffic up.

[i:07c4b6f0b7]Back on the 26th of February, DJ Shad co-hosted an event at Bice in the P&L district on the turntables with Shawn Edwards of Fox 4 News and Kolby Smith, a Chiefs running back. The place was packed with grown and sexys on two floors. But as you’ll read later, this isnt the first time that the black community has been invited with open arms to P&L. It was a great event, and really threw a wrench in the notion that the black community is simply not accepted in Power and Light. Throughout the night, Shad kept the music very safe, and as you’ll read later, that’s because he wants to be invited back to P&L to do similar hip hop and soul music events. Here’s what Shad had to say about the event.[/i:07c4b6f0b7]
[b:07c4b6f0b7]Demencha: What was the event for?[/b:07c4b6f0b7]
DJ Shad: The Event was a kick off for Sean Edwards of Fox 4’s 50 Greatest Black Sports Movies.
[b:07c4b6f0b7]Demencha: Who hosted the event[/b:07c4b6f0b7]?
DJ Shad: The Event was hosted by Sean Edwards, Kolby Smith of the KC Chiefs and Myself.
[b:07c4b6f0b7]Demencha: What was the racial makeup of the crowd?[/b:07c4b6f0b7]
DJ Shad: The crowd was very diverse, which I was impressed by the promotion to the different demographics.
[b:07c4b6f0b7]Demencha: To the best of your knowledge, was this the first kind of event in Kansas City’s Power and Light District that resembled such a racial makeup?[/b:07c4b6f0b7]
DJ Shad: I wouldn’t say it was the first, I have to give credit to people like DJ Sun Up Jones who used to play at Lucky Strike and DJ Fresh and Q45 formally of Bet Rap City who DJ’ed Mr. Smith’s Birthday Party a few months ago.
[b:07c4b6f0b7]Demencha: Were there higher ups from Cordish there? [/b:07c4b6f0b7]
DJ Shad: Yes, there were.
[b:07c4b6f0b7]Demencha: Do you want to be allowed back into Power and Light to DJ similar events? [/b:07c4b6f0b7]
DJ Shad: Yes, I feel that Hip Hop can be succcessful in the Power and Light if it is done right. People have to understand you just can’t go down there and crunk it out. You can have a balance, its all about style and presentation.
[b:07c4b6f0b7]Demencha: On the drive home from the event, what was your overall summary of how the event went? Did it go as you hoped it would? [/b:07c4b6f0b7]
DJ Shad: I think the event was excellent. People are still talking about it. I extended the invitation out to members of the Hip Hop community and a few did show up. It’s like fighting an uphill battle, people complain about nothing to do and when they are invited, they don’t show up. How can we break new ground if they are not motivated to try new things. I know there were issues in the past and we were trying to show that you can have a successful event with hip hop in the district. Three years ago people were making the same comment about Westport and now artists are trying to break in the market, I think its a cycle.

That's fine and well, but it should be noted that Shawn Edwards is represented by Phillips-West (the only Black-owned PR firm in Kansas City). Why is that important? Because they were retained by The Cordish Group shortly before their meeting with the City council and KC residents.
And not surprisingly Shawn Edwards was one of the people who spoke on behalf of Cordish.
So...
This amounts to little in my book.
