I just wanted to post this so you all know some history and that artists have been struggling way before 2008 to get some industry / National / International recognition...
Peep this first hand account from our friend / Hip Hop Advocate / DJ / Producer/ Promoter / Industry Door Opener / Rabblerouser Out on the BEst cOAST;
Lets set the story straight out the gate. undo your fingers cause he will not be the 1st Hip Hop artist from KC to put an album out on a major label.
Vell Bakardy released a record a record in 1996 on WILD WEST/AMERICAN Warner Brothers Distributed. American Records was RICK RUBIN which roster at the time included BLACK CROWES, JOHHNY CASH yes I said JOHNNY CASH, SIR MIX A LOT and also the hip hop side of things included CHINO XL, Qwest the MADD LADD, THE NONCE, VELL BAKARDY, THE MEXICANZ, SUPREME. I personally dropped Vell off at Warner Brothers to have marketing and promotions meeting. Bugs Bunny Money. Look on Vell's cd you'll see Warner Brothers name on there somewhere just Before Vell had a deal, Tech9, Vell's younger blood cousin, was signed to Perspective records under the name Nuthouze (You know the story). Ask ICEY ROCK, I was there I was at PERSPECTIVE offices with DYNO MAC and ICEY ROCK which was owned by JIMMY JAM and TERRY LEWIS. They were getting A&M money. word up. I was in PARAMOUNT STUDIOS during the recordings of that album. Sure they're album got shelved. but that was shelved on a major label A&M records.
check this they're was LO-KEY who got NUTHOUZE they're inside to get a deal and TECH going out the gate. They made R&B and Hip Hop listen to MO'MONEY Soundtrack. This is All major label stuff from cats making hip hop from out town. I have more. Cat by the name of LIVEO HARRIS in a group 4 SURE on RUFF HOUSE/COLUMBIA released an r&B Hip Hop new jack swing record around NEW EDITION BBD break. Livio and group were all from producers/singers/rappers from KC.
I have even more what no one really knows. I know cause I kick it with him all the time and he laugh's when I'm out on the grind. ACEYALONE was originally from KC. He grew up there when he was real young and moved to Cali as a child. His family still lives in KC.
Ain't nothing that hasn't already been done.
VELL also had a record on MACOLA records in 1987 with JOC MAX on the cut. I was in the group with them called The PROJECT ONE. We recorded that originally at studio out past royals stadium. in 87'. It is on wax and I own the original vinyl. MACOLA put out the 1st ICE T record they put out first KING T 12", EASY E records, NWA records all that early 80's westcoast hip hop.
All I'm saying is give credit where credit is due. And If I can write an article about the History of KANSAS CITY HIP HOP. We are known for are JAZZ but our Hip Hop artist are just like our historian Jazz ambassadors not respected for they're efforts. All these cats we named did it without myspace, no internet, no google, no radio I mean none until about 92 kkfi Joe Knekbone Call In-Sick Show, KPRS have since come and go with local play. We had heart and love of hip hop. Cat's don't realize what impact Gary DJ Fresh played since late 70's early 80's. HIP HOP people. Then there was DJ K-ROCK who was bringing all the HIP HOP shows here in the early 80's. Biz Markie was regularly in KC. Vell went to NY and recorded FIRST 5 DRINKS and 2 other songs with COOL V and Biz that were to be out on Cold Chillin' but Grand Daddy I.U. filled one of the last Cold Chillin' which also Biz and Cool V produced for, that's real talk. Alot people don't know Vell recorded at KURTIS BLOW studio back in 89' song called PROPHETS OF A NEW GENERATION.
I respect and honor all the effort of today's local talents and I encourage and support most each and every KC artist who I communicate regularly with and even if I don't know them.
Maybe all that has been mention above has flown under the radar. never went platinum so I can get why cats don't know these things. I wish much success to Legion, the LEGEND on his climb to the top. Maybe he could take the ranks by being the first platinum rapper from KC. I need to hear more original work if there is something available.
I have started Wilshire District my label to create a platform for artists especially that I know back home to support on the westcoast. I have recently supplied EMCEE REACH album CornerSpeech and he's sold out of Access Hip Hop San Diego 2x's plus adding FatBeats LA and Amoeba LA.
Lets build in 200great.
PEACE
