Topic: I think I lost all hope for this city

  1. Feb 12, 2008 09:55pm by Urban-Suburban Location: Kansas City, Kansas
I didnt lose hope in the artists. My city has got the talent. I lost hope in anyone being able to utilize that talent here. I travel alot and as Im sure alot of you know, as far as our music scene goes, we are just... different. Very different. Different in the sense that its very hard to describe. I know its unfair to compare KC to L.A. but everytime Im in California I see how they work and they move fast and get alot accomplished, with music, promotions and ultimately with money. Then I come back home and everythings at a stand still... but I cant figure out how and why :-/ Who knows, maybe its an unfair comparison. But a 4 hour trip to St. Louis would allow me to rest my case. but what do I know.. I do know its 2008 and we're in the same position we were in in 2000. Not being pessimistic, just being realistic.

i think most of it is about venues. this city hates venues that aren't like... irish bars. i think it's leftover from prohibition & jazz or something. you're going to have a hard time consistently booking anything, which is going to prevent artists from maturing in their live performances, confidence, and networking, and you're not going to sell much that way either. on the other hand, i don't really care that some other city is doing anything that's more financially viable. i hope people here aren't in it for the money.

This city will never have the kind of movement people fantasize about. It's just not realistic for 2 dozen rappers, in the metropolitan area, to have major label deals. It's unfair to compare Kansas City to cities 6 times its size. Certainly each individual artist can aspire to do more, but as I always say I can't define another man's hustle. My hustle is my concern. Im striving for greater things, certainly, as are many many others. I LOVE this city.

Over the years, local veteran hip-hop group Heet Mob has hosted the most colorful open-mic nights in Kansas City. The Mob's first open-mic night started at Club Mardi Gras in the jazz district in 1999 and later moved to the Hurricane in 2002, where the event held on until 2005. Now, Heet Mob has started a brand-new thing at the Embassy on Main. While the Mob's DJ Hylanda plays the hottest industry beats, a passionate base of seasoned and rookie MCs steps to the mic throughout the night to spit everything from deranged battle raps to hilarious rhyming improv. As Hylanda points out, most hip-hop clubs in KC cater to "just the mainstream guys or just the backpackers." At Mic-Check Mondays, all hip-hop heads are greeted with open arms. Heet Mob's open mics have provided a training ground for some of the area's best MCs. Here, the legacy continues. - The Pitch Weekly, October 2007 NOBODY does an open mic like heet mob. At Mic Check Mondays, there's a guy who comes on a regular basis and he gets up and spits some super revolutionary spoken word stuff. I heard that he opened up for Saul Williams last time he was here, and a bunch of other touring spoken word artists. There's a guy who comes in and plays the saxaphone, and gets people slow dancing on the floor, there's GREAT mcs who come on a regular basis that the peanut crowd doesn't know about, people like R.O.B. (Reflection of Brilliance), Young Fierce, Traffic and his crew, even comedians come through on occassion. And everyone is greeted with open arms. It really makes me scratch my head as to why more peanut-affiliated artists don't go to this event every Monday. Again, the Embassy Bar is on Main, right next to Harlings and the old Recycled Sounds. See you there

I haven't been in a while, but since I will be writing for a blog, I might have to start creepin back up thurrr. The reason that Pnut regs don't show is simple..... I hate to say this. Because the Truth hurts but Cliques Cliques in KC keeps people apart, keeps people from working together, keeps people from learning about each other, and keeps negative shit going! It is the reason Kansas City will never blow up! (and the reason I did) 🙁 Until you see a page where you can find out whats going on in Hip Hop all over Kansas City, we will stay in the dark. I'm not talking about a forum. Im talking all crews and leaders of each set, getting together and making it happen. Everyones on one page. There are crews that go to the peanut, but don't talk to other crews. I mean look at the "Grassnasty" show at the Record Bar. I know people got other things going on and it was a Monday. But I was expecting to see more familiar heads than out of towners, just the opposite. Forget it, again Hateration will always exist in Hip Hop! "I hear it time and time and time again. "Oh I don't mess with so and so, they down with this posse or that posse." Yeah what if Nas would have kept saying that about Jay-Z, would there be "Black-Republicans"? I works with err body. From Heet Mob, to people trying to get on like Machine. sorry if I stepped on your toes. I meant everything I said to come out in a loving older brother voice. dig? I love Hip Hop, I love Kansas City, but we have no unity, no direction, and we don't speak as one voice, and everybody is trying to talk all at once, speaking for themselve or their crew, instead of giving each other time and a platform, or support. Try bumpin someone whos dope from Kansas City, other than yourself for a minute, see where it gets us. PEACE!! AF

excuses aside, i think alot of us (emcees) haven't got up there mainly bc it's on a Monday more than any other conspiracy theory you can apply. weekdays are a tough turnaround for those of us that work or wake early. i can't speak for everyone but i know it has nothing to do w/ anybody i'm affiliated with in the 'scene'. that's never been a factor in me rocking anywhere in America. hell i still need to hit the open mic at Pearl's too, but i haven't made it out there either.

posses, cliques, crews, you name it you can nay say them but I choose to see this as a real plus for our scene working with people who inspire you is first and foremost then cross pollenation comes second sure its hard for those who are not aligned with a crew but not acknowledging that crews (heet mob is one of the longest, tightest machines in kc) do something valuable for local artists is like denying that everyone needs and seeks out their tribe. so moving on, lets try something different, lets stop crew bashing and start celebrating something that IS working for us and figure out how to move on to the next step. how about touring crews throughout the midwest, creating a circuit that all artists can use to get their art out to the people haha nuf said for now

The idea that crews will ever cease to exist here in Kansas City (or anywhere else) is about as likely as Nelly becoming a doper emcee than Jay-Z. Ain't gonna happen. Crews/sects/cliques are natural formations. People will always group themselves with folk who share their experiences. There's nothing wrong with that. Besides... The idea that there's this crew warfare going on in Kansas City is a joke. Am I cool with each and every member of the scene? Absolutely not, but to pretend that the Soul Providers are somehow funking with InnateSounds is flat silly. Hell, we're all collaborating with one another. There are rival crews, but that isn't as significant as some would have you to believe. I would venture to guess that Kansas City is a hell of a lot more cohesive than other metropolitan areas this size. We will never see a day when a herd of Rap cats stroll down Prospect hand-in-hand reciting the lines to "Self Destruction". That's unrealistic and unnecessary to achieving our goals. Certainly we can always improve upon the interaction with other artists, but to disassemble the "crew" is to do this town a disservice. A big one. How about Monday's are just a bad night for a lot of folk? HeetMob? Them my brothers FOR REAL. It's just hard to get out on that night. We gotta stop pointing fingers at folk when they can't get out to an event. It's not always a clandestine plot to flip certain crews or artists "the bird". Sometimes it's just a bad night. Sometime's it's bad timing.

KC's scene has way more love than STL. I have had great experiences with almost everyone I've connected with in KC. I also have the luxury of not living there though. So maybe I'm missing some shit. I've played 10 times as many shows in STL and the one show last monday I played at the record bar in KC blew em all away on almost every level. The talent was consistently fresh, and there was a decent amount of heads for a monday. I didn't see any crew beef either. I agree with reach on the size of cities point as well. I think for an indie hip-hop scene KC has stayed pretty consistently nice. If you wanna talk about major label shit then just move out of KC and get snuffed out by the oversaturation of "dope" emcees in huge cities. Throw your pennies in some wishing wells too. I think we have a lot of shit going for us in Kansas. Sorry I'm all over the place on this post but mostly we need to be positive. KC cats need to start touring. I made a post about a month ago about working together on contacts plenty of people looked at the post but nobody said a fucking thing. It really isn't that hard. Your not going to get rich in one week doing it though. I gotta go but I want to talk to people serious about touring. P.S. If you want to tour you need to start saving some money. I've heard people quote,"Heet Mob Mondays..This is the Anti-Peanut." that is the mentality I am speaking of. The simple fact that people post projects, info, news, or stories, and nobody even makes one comment, should be enough evidence that there is even a clique that exist within this site. I've heard more people give this excuse, as to why they don't post here. I thought it was the nonsense I do. Its bigger than me though. How come the Drop Kick Murphy's never have a show the same night as the Architects? You never see the Roman Numerals playing the same night as the Elders,a t two different spots. How come my friends are always going to see a different Rock or Punk show every night. And its usually never a problem trying to decide which band to go see? They also all know each other and go to the same parties. Just trying to make sense of all this. I've heard it at least three times this month how someone went to another city and they came home to see how KC is stuck. peas AF

My whole little temper tantrum is over the fact that, I know what it would've looked like if every one, was reppin everyone. Big people for the little people. Plus the fact that groups already "established" could've gained more fans. (or at least pass fliers) Unless everyone has enough fans. Thats the only logic I seen to why there were't more "old school" family there. If I was an outsider in the crowd, I would've been like. I don't see no KC Hip Hop "celebs" here, these dudes must be whack! No merch, no promos, no? I've seen more promotion at a b.s. HHHWings night, when the bar closed at 11:45pm. Luckily they judged for themselves that night, but they are still sit in the dark when it comes to KC HipHop. That night they heard nothing of SP, IN, HMob, KKFI, or HHKC.com. Where were their soldiers? The represntation was non-existant! why? im asking for other people..I already know. LUV! af

i've seen plenty of nights where people have to decide which show to go to in whatever genre. it's especially a problem for somebody like me who wants to go to two different shows of different genres on the same night... again, i still think having a solid venue helps a lot of that... because for the most part, people are going to always have a home base to gravitate to. right now, it's the peanut, but i would never advocate getting anchored to a bar. but we've had the all ages discussion too many times here.

all i know is that we should have more shows together it should be a sp/team/swassblasty/soul servers show i mean we all respectfully have enough fans from every aspect of the city and some fans love more than one or all of the crews so why not have a massive ass gig somewhere untapped

you guys care too much. i don't even really know what this thread is about. you know every medium-sized city, especially in the midwest, probably deals with this dumb fairweather pride issue. i don't care how the "scene" is, whichever it may be, i'm more concerned with who i let into my life as people. it's never really about "the music"... not to me, anyway. all i know is, i will never willfully live in any other city in the united states. but, you know, the internet is serious business.
