Ring the alarm, another year is passing. Whoa, aye.
Seriously, good riddance 2005, and don’t you come back no more. 2006 is going to be fresh! H&M, the store for us ballers-on-a-budget, might be the hottest addition to Village West, the new Roots album is on its way, D’Angelo and Maxwell are supposed to make comebacks, the Fugees are trying to gear up for world domination and, my very guilty pleasure, “Instant Star,†is back for a new season on the N.
Maybe Dave Chappelle will actually finish Season 3 of “Chappelle’s Show.†I mean they are showing the few filmed episodes regardless, so just come back, Dave. You can dance without shuffling, baby. (A girl can wish, you know.)
Here are some more reasons to celebrate the 0-6.
? The Rap Attack: On Saturday, Jan. 28, Sike Steez is spinning up one sick show at the Record Bar, 1020 Westport Road, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Hosted by Reach and Vert, the show will feature some of KC’s finest, including CES, Approach, the Soul Servers and other rhymesayers. For more information, e-mail [email protected] . And on Friday, Jan. 27, SoundsGood is serving soul by the pound at the Jackpot Saloon, 943 Mass. St. in Lawrence. For more details, visit www.yourfavoritegroup.com .
? Homegrown Hip-Hop: Anti-Crew, one of KC’s younger hip-hop duos, hustled a spot as an opening act for national artists in the ’06. They will be opening for Mobb Deep in New York, Fat Joe in Virginia and a roster of other artists. Approach is finally releasing his new work, and if “Currency†is a teaser of what’s to come, heads better recognize. Mac Lethal’s “11:11†will finally be unleashed. And word has it that Nezbeat and Joe Good are in the lab making mad music while Miles Bonny and CES Cru are cooking up a special delivery. Who knows, maybe that Human Cropcircles Lucid Project will finally emerge.
? Gotta Stay Fly: There’s a new go-to boutique for accessories and diva purses — KoKo Boudreaux, in Town Center Plaza. From fancy soaps that even Oprah loves, to handmade scarves, gloves and shrugs to edgy belts and sexy bags — when you want to get right for the club, KoKo will have your back for the new year. Be on the lookout for monthly fashion shows and chic events coming out of this store. Now, if only B Blaze would throw a block party fashion show. It could be sweet.
? One Wish: It is my right to have pink, healthy lungs. Kansas City, please, follow our friendly neighbors in Lawrence and ditch the butts. I’d like to go out and kick it on the weekend without my hair, clothes and lungs being abused by nicotine. Cigarettes really aren’t necessary to have fun, and Lawrence night life is hot, hot, hot without cancer sticks. Smoke-free, it’s the way to be.
? OK, Maybe Two: Downtown, what can I say? You want us young folk to move downtown, then we do, and for what? When the streetlights go out, it takes forever for them to come back on. We get snowed in — I can’t even begin to explain the horror of driving downtown in the snow. And if you want to eat late-night, the choices are slim. We’re still waiting on that grocery store. A soul lounge wouldn’t hurt, you know. Get Joc Max and Miles Bonny to spin. Maybe you need a focus group. We’ve got our fingers crossed that you’ll get it right.
