It was complete nonsense. Blood. Vomiting. Broken equipment. Crying. Fear. Hate. All because someone can't wait their turn to freestyle. Not really what anyone anticipated going down. At least not me. Thanks to everyone who came to enjoy what the night was created for, a positive, creative and peaceful environment that nurtures KC Hip Hop. I'm sorry that it all took place, and I hated seeing so many upset and disappointed people. And thanks to Blam especially for being a champ helping guard our gear. Thankfully we only lost some cables and no one was seriously injured. What a bummer.

Bummer to hear about that. Sad to be the one to inform, but the peanut is still a bar and bars serve alcohol which can help some people get extra crazy. That's not an excuse for anything that happened there, but it is the reality.

I wish my eyes could have recorded this all for you and played it back in HD quality slow motion. Really you all would be as pissed as i was if you are a Peanut regular or just a fan of a dope place to chill.
This was a classic high school brawl and could have got a lot worse and i am thankful no one walked away with a manslaughter or assault charge.
The main perpetrator in fracas was a guy whom i've seen at the Peanut before. Some might categorize him in the "new-comers" catalog since he doesn't respect the house rules. (like no haggling at the merch table or punching emcees) His friends were new to the scene there and didn't help much when their boy went berzerker just cuz he couldn't wait his turn in line. This is a classic case of big man small nuts.
What are we 5 years old and throwing tantrums again...
I have never been this agitated at the Peanut and saw and ugly side of myself that i care not to share with people. I didn't throw any punches or get stuck but i was cheer on the people i thought were stomping out the dude that started it. I am not the one to cheer on the fight but this one was personal for me. I felt like this dude walked in my house and broke my xbox...hahaha...
seriously... i stopped going to the Peanut because i needed a break and the last thing i thought would happen was this. What a return!
i know this guys face....when and if he comes back to the peanut i will try to be the bigger man and try to ignore him. But my patience is wearing thin.
Overall i don't think this will hurt hh&hw...but it's going to go on the police record as a disturbance call and the liquor board will prolly add a tally to the list of offenses they have lodged against the Peanut. We are off to a bad start here in KC. Murder on NYE at Skybox and now this. What's next 2008? Does the Peanut need actual security? We've been sort of policing ourselves for all this time.
What changes does anyone forsee?
- Jan 14, 2008 03:59pm by nadia
That was truly upsetting. It had been such a fun night.
Every time that something like that goes on and the police arrive (like seventeen cars or however many, ten minutes after everyone was long gone, thanks guys), the bar is usually written up for a 'tavern disturbance' that goes to the regulated industries folks. And I guess we just have to hope that the management of the Peanut treats this like any other bar brawl on any other night and doesn't try to dismantle HH&HW. I'm crossing my fingers and toes.
I really hated seeing people I love caught up in the insanity of all that.
I tried to tell one of the officers who showed up that the guys in that fight had never come to the Peanut before (that's what one of them told me earlier in the night). That cop looked at me like I was some kind of roach.

Last night was so unfortunate.
On so many different levels.
It's disappointing that it had to come to that. Especially over a microphone.
It's disheartening to see something happen that could potentially jeopardize HH+HW for Peanut patrons.
I'm equally if not more upset to see my brothers acting out and having zero control over their aggression.
I saw it coming.
That sweltering circle full of anxious emcees looked like a powder keg from the outside. It's the very reason why I kept my seat. I wish I had brought this to someone's attention sooner. Perhaps this could've been avoided.
The way to break through all of this isn't to close the circuit and continue to perpetuate frustrations and angst. We gotta go the other way y'all.

crazy thing was, that was my very reason for being in the midde of the open mic, to mediate and make sure cats are not buggin over who's turn it is..I do it all the time when I do go just to make sure that everyone gets a turn to spit. I could have never in a thousand years painted that rediculous outcome that took place by simply passin the mic to someone on the left of me instead of the right.
- Jan 14, 2008 08:16pm by superfreshbutterfly
i am still in disbelief of what i saw on sunday night. i feel like someone came into our home and tore it up. i watched my brothers be disrespected. i saw grown men almost in tears, it was heartbreaking. i left the peanut feeling like i needed to throw up, that is how disgusted i was at the violence i witnessed, the lack of self-respect and the lack of humanity. i am still trying to understand how a brawl broke out over a microphone, i was right there when it happened and i still can't make sense of it. i haven't seen this type of shit since high school, since like ninth grade. i worked hard to get out of the type of environment that breeds this ignorance, this violence. Just when you think you have escaped it, it comes right to where you hang out. i truly hope this doesn't hurt hip-hop and hotwings, i mean it's going on its third year and it truly is a place for real hip-hop to grow and our community to come together... i just...sigh. peace to all of you.

there was no way to predict that was going to happen, i was watching from the back w/ Les and i didn't want any part of it at first. Cypher wise there just wasn't a good vibe to it. it was like:
wack rapper, wack rapper, wack rapper, Dutch kills it, wack rapper, wack rapper, Gunny does his thing, etc etc etc.
i thought it was gonna go bad, figured someone would get their feelings hurt and heads would have words which is typical, but not a melee. it got real stupid real fast.
the Peanut bouncer trying to be Patrick Swayze in Roadhouse didn't help the situation either, all he did was encite the fight even further.

if its about dudes wanting time on the mic....why dont they try and set up a show so they can say whatever they want? its a pointless question to ask seeing as how whoever they are, they probably dont read this...but it only makes sense to me...its like goin to a buffet and fightin a stranger over the last roll...open your own restaurant and you can eat what you want....

Necia used the term "powder keg" to describe hip hop culture once in a talk we had on the phone a while back. Hip hop is the voice of frustrated youth, and that can manifest itself in some ugly situations.
What's crazy is that an incident similar to this happened at the Point two fridays ago. The Point, for those who don't know, is like the house music version of the peanut. All the scenesters go there and it's a family reunion every friday. Well, last friday, one of the DJs got attacked WHILE he was playing records, and they punched one of his female friends. The hoodlums ran off immediately. The Point has been a loose cannon for a while. And guess what? They don't have security in there.
Which brings me to this...
Sike wrote:

There should be. One reason other cities live music scenes are better is because they're PREPARED for shit like this to happen. THEY HAVE SECURITY. Once upon a time, it was thought that if someone did try to start shit at the peanut that the peanut family would take care of the situation and keep it from escalating. Those days are gone.
To all club owners: if you're doing underground music in any sense, whether it be deep house or indie hip hop, GET SOME SECURITY. I don't know if it's greed that keeps people from hiring security or what. But if you don't, that shit will come back to haunt you sooner or later.
Thank god no one was seriously hurt.
p.s. patting people down at the door wouldn't hurt anyone either

Having security definitely wouldn't hurt.
I think the open mic should take on a more structure format as well.
Sign up... Get your 1:30 and run your verse. When your time's up... It's the next man's turn. No questions asked. No fighting about it. Just go and sit down.

that's the thing though, i don't think any of those cats were rappers for real. they saw a mic they were drunk they became rappers for the night. bc everyone is a rapper these days it seems. you could tell, they didn't even know how to project themselves into the microphone.
it definitely needs some structure, bc you cant just throw a mic out there and expect to be able to regulate who gets to spit when and who doesn't.
they need security probably for a number of reasons, not just bc of what happened last night. they also need their bouncers to understand that their role isn't to try to dive into the crowd and try to fight 6 on 1.

I feel like no one would try this shit at an Heet Mob open mic. They're organized, respectful, and intimidating.
Reach is right, add structure to the open mics. Turning a mic over to an ungoverned group of drunk emcees is like tossing a steak into a circle of rabid dogs.
I wasn't there, I'm not sure that's what happened, but I'm all about us making sure it doesn't happen again and keeping HH&HW going.

I'm all for real security.
But it costs money.
So people might have to get used to paying something more at the door or paying more for drinks for that to happen, right?

thank you for all your concerns, suggestions and support.
i'm sorry to all in attendance that the night went this direction.
i've never witnessed such negativity in the room until this.
it seems ridiculous that such a little slice of ignorance can have such
a profound effect, but i'm very depressed over the whole ordeal.
i hope this incident won't prevent too many of you from coming out again next week and the weeks ahead. we need you all to be strong and
supportive in light of this event to ensure that it won't drag the night down in general.
We can't let these fools ruin a good thing.
We will exlpore various security options in the mean time.
I just don't want people to feel intimidated by any on sight security presence.
any suggestions on how to approach the security aspect are welcome.
i just don't want to have gorillas harrassing patrons become another batch of problems....

building up until this went down.

agreed.
but here's the rub, the peanut is a public place, subject to public laws, public anger, public disgrace .
WE all know, the real about this "kc divide" and we know that with the closing of skybox, there is a void right now and folks are looking for a spot to call home.
I guess what I'm getting at is its not even about being babysat, its more about having fun, being together, having peace in community, while listening to what we love and growing ourselves as people and friends.
that to me is way more important and worth having security to uphold and maintain our peace.
by the same token, I think if the energy of the security provided is cruisin for a bruisin, that alone could attract menacing angry folk to "test it"
so finally, based on something I proposed a year ago, if we would present
any bar we partner with a "kc hiphop credo and standards" of our intention as a community, that would say "we care" and are generally committed to peaceful shows, professionalism, and shared prosperity for all involved, that might go over with clubs "WE" work with. (started a thread to collect comments , ideas, possible standards for this project
If you give some imput, I could draft such a document that would contain our collective ideas and post it here for downloading by any artist, promoter, club owner or fan/supporter and maybe just maybe over time it could take hold as a new trend locally.
BE PROACTIVE

I don't think there is a need for security at the peanut.
What happened on Sunday was very unfortunate and an isolated incident. Points I would like to make are:
-The violence that happened was a product of a group of low class, uncivilized, young drunk patrons.
-It had nothing to do with open mic....we had impromptu open mics almost every week on wednesdays for over a year with absolutely no problems. Tons of great battles went down, tons of wack mcs got put in their place, and lots of local cats grew in skill during that time. We were begged for about 2 hours from hungry mc's for a miThe fools on sunday who started everything by knocking a mic out of the other guys hand and then throwing punches didn't give a fuck about the peanut, hhhw's, hip hop, culture, respect, real mc's, dj's, or anyone who has been a supporter over the years.
-within about 2 1/2 punches, a bottle was already being broken over someone's head.....this was already in the works, they were looking for a spot to get stupid in that night...dirty fighters are low class uncivilized wannabes who don't have anything better to add to the world than negativity.
-as for the peanut staff who were involved, they were trying to break it up and kick them out....they weren't trying to get jumped
-non of the regular head were being stupid and adding fuel....i couldn't have been happier with the human wall of people who helped protect our thousands of dollars worth of shit setting out, catching falling speakers twice before they crashed, and just keeping it contained until it extinguished itself after about 3 rounds.
-i loved the irony of the guys who started it getting vomited on by their boys as they are rolling around on the ground in vomit and broken glass....such class.
-i don't feel anything has changed other than for the better. it's not like the hip hop community in kc is very big...pretty close family...and the peanut is like a house party every week and we all live there. it's like the same old scenario....some pieces of shit heard there was a house party going on so they go in with all there boys, get drunk, realize they aren't going to get laid, so they don't give a fuck and disrespect everyone there because it's not their place and they have nothing vested in it. every regular of the peanut was disrespected that night even if they weren't in attendance, and as a family we were all victimized from it, which is why we all take it so personal.
- Jan 16, 2008 03:59am by phism
security can cause fights, also.
i don't think security would have helped this not happen. security would have just been more physical with the people involved which, in general but not always, usually ends in people also fighting with security. i think average joes mediating... has about the same result when you're dealing with numerous people trying to fight.

the Cauldron, the KC Wizards supporters group, were discussing their problems with the security at Arrowhead a few months ago (which is moot now that the team will be playing elsewhere) and having pretty much this same discussion. They basically decided just to set up a slightly more formal self-policing to try to keep small problems from turning into big ones. In that they would have members of the group stationed around the place to tell people little things like don't stand on the seats, don't spray your beer around everywhere, etc... things that drew the attention of arrowhead security/police or just irritated people.
I don't know exactly what I'm trying to get across here, but maybe that idea will help something.

In an ideal world security wouldn't be necessary.
Unfortunately you and I live in the real world.
And while I understand the perception of HH+HW as a tight-knit family...
I also realize that it's not an exclusive country club. There will and should be new patrons who may or may not identify with the "scene". For that reason alone... Structure is necessary.
I'm not in the business of diffusing scuffles.
To expect that other people with similar limitations will be able to is to be disingenuous.
I hear what you're saying Necia, but what I didn't want to happen is for this to be seen as an "us and them" situation. The perceived divide wasn't the problem that night. I think that's unfair to people on the other side (if it can even be called that).
A more formal open mic structure is necessary to having control over situations like these. That's not to point the finger at anyone. That's just an observation. As a person who has run an open mic in the past... Having control pre-empts situations like that one.

reach, I wasn't there to see what happened on sunday, but I am so confused about this, was it an us and them situation? I can understand not wanting to encourage/speak this reality, but I dont' know, can any thing evolve without naming the elephant that's taking up all the space in the room. bottomline, my ass wasn't there.

When I was going there on a regular basis, I and a few others would willing take control of the open mike to make sure everyone got a turn and out of all the times I've done it a fight had never been even close to breaking out, it was nuthing but respect between myself and everyone who was in the cypher, wheter you were a regular or newcomer. Now if someone had not been up there all of those times to stand in the middle, would the outcome have been the same? prolly not..I felt like if myself or someone was not up there to mediate then Sundays behavior would be the norm... again its not something I was appointed to do, but out of respect for the establishment it was something I chose to do. Many times me and Duece would volenteer to help throw someone out who had too much to drink or help them move or organize tables and such, again this is when i was there EVERY Sunday & Wed without fail.
I agree if open mike is gonna be something that continues than it should be structured and the responsibility of a regular at the nut. Security would not be necessary if there was structure. There was so many people up there rappin Sunday that I begin to lose track of who had gone and who had not, primarily because i wasnt really payin attention, just trying to see that everyone had a turn.
Had it had been structured and perhaps even if I would have paid more attention to who was rhyming, then theres a really good chance that we wouldnt be talking about this. Not to say that I feel at fault for what happened cuz Im not the father of anyone in there, but to say that it could have perhaps been prevented if i was a lil more ontop of my game like usually, i just became disinterested in what i was hearing after awhile.

I'm glad some peeps don't want to have babysitters either.
I don't get it, some people like the big brother tip. Adults being babysat by other adults???? AFTER ONE THING HAPPENED?? Having hired security would make me feel less comfortable than the situation did during the incident.
DUBLow was right, it's like a house party, shit happens, then you try to make sure it doesn't happen again. Mainly, dont let the people who started the fight back in or whatever.[/quote:85fe297bbf]
Who's to say that what happened Sunday night won't happen again? This isn't a house party we're talking about here, the peanut is a public place. I'm not suggesting that the peanut has a fucking army of security guards like at some of the bigger hip hop clubs, just a few people. and i think the open mic should be organized. it's the most volatile part of the night anyways...
Why would having hired security make you feel less comfortable?

[quote:33e51d503f="dublow"]I don't think there is a need for security at the peanut.
-i don't feel anything has changed other than for the better. it's not like the hip hop community in kc is very big...pretty close family...and the peanut is like a house party every week and we all live there. it's like the same old scenario....some pieces of shit heard there was a house party going on so they go in with all there boys, get drunk, realize they aren't going to get laid, so they don't give a fuck and disrespect everyone there because it's not their place and they have nothing vested in it. every regular of the peanut was disrespected that night even if they weren't in attendance, and as a family we were all victimized from it, which is why we all take it so personal.[/quote:33e51d503f]
No matter what club you're at, you're not gonna be able to keep young, "uncivilized" people from coming into your bar. Unless you have a dress code, which I am NOT suggesting at the peanut. Or an age limit, like 25+ for guys and 21+ for girls...
I think other people doing hip hop open mics in KC will tell you that doing an open mic as unorganized as it has been at the jumpoff was bound to end up in a bad situation sooner or later. Heet Mob, for instance, takes pride in doing an organized open mic.

You did the best you could to make the cypher fair and balanced.
I sat and watched you pass the mic around. It's not on you.
And my suggestion isn't a judgment either. There's nothing wrong with running an open mic that way. It just presents a problem with the wrong type of cats invovled.
I just think with a list it would make it a less tense situation.
That way cats can come take the mic off of the stand, spit, put it back and take their seat. Alcohol, mixed in with egos, and a bunch of dudes packed into a tight space? Problem, problem, problem...

No shit. It's a fucking bar. And has no one ever seen a fight before? These things happen from time to time.
Do I look like Heet Mob? I'm not an emcee, nor should i be expected to play the beats, then run out and regulate turns. We were begged for 2 hours for a mic so all the regulars could spit. Shit was fine with dutch, les, gunny, lou, etc.....everyone was loving it and it had a good vibe like always, only after the wack wannabes got on there at the end did it get stupid.
if you were so knowledgeable that it was bad to have impromptu freestyle sessions, then why were you and so many other people praising us for giving so many people a chance to get on there on Wednesdays when they wouldn't do it on sunday's.
when some shit hits the fan everyone tries to point the finger, even though nobody is at fault, except for a small group of people who lack respect and discipline.
us and them? yes, us and them...a room of self disciplined adults vs a small group of people rolling around in their own vomit.
once again, the problem was not with a cypher, a microphone....it was a small number of people who got involved at the end who didn't care about anyone there.
if you had a ton of big brutalizing bouncers running around in the mix, you don't think that would've added to the violence?
if a drunk wannabe rapper got his feelings hurt in a cypher, or 10 seconds after he sat down in a chair after his turn was up, there wouldn't be a chance for him to go swinging a bottle over ol' boys head later.
what happened is over with....people should stop trying to blame somebody and become more unified.
and i'm not bring mics anymore since baby's can't handle it.
oh, and a dude chucked a glass a vertigone at the record bar a couple weeks ago.....someone should call the record bar and tell them to only use plastic cups from now on.

I feel like maybe I'm dangling a toe into pirhana-infested waters here, but...
as an audience member, open-mics are fucking BORING.
It's not that it's anyone's job to entertain ME, of course. Obviously if I were an MC I'd probably enjoy them more, and I do appreciate their place in hip-hop culture. I really do. I just like it better when they happen out in the parking lot. I'd rather listen when people are done practicing (and fucking up).
So if the end result of all this were that open mics happened very infrequently, I'd prefer that to the other option of us getting security guards to take our money and hang out like a big raincloud over our heads.

1) yea i know the pnut is a public place but we were refering to it AS a house party like situation.
2) Having hired security would make me feel less comfortable because of my personal beliefs.
- Jan 17, 2008 12:24am by _DEMENCHA_
Mike, I do appreciate everything you've done for the jumpoff including the open mic portion of the night. I said that the open mic part of the night is the most volatile part of the jumpoff. That volatility is something you have to accept as a hip hop head. It's expression, and expression is volatile by nature. And I do appreciate Lou Rip for mediating the open mics for so long.
This denial that...
A. Nothing bad has ever happend at the peanut or
B. Nothing bad can happen at the peanut or
C. Nothing bad will ever happen at the peanut ever again is ridiculous.
If one of those trouble makers at the peanut this past sunday would've brandished a weapon or even worse, hurt somebody seriously (shot, stabbed) would you guys still be so stubborn towards the idea of getting security in there? Is that what it's gonna take?
Let me explain where I'm sitting on this issue personally...
That was the first time I'd ever seen a fight on that kind of scale in a public place, honestly. And it did happen at one of my favorite places to go to. So yea, I am thinking twice about safety at the peanut including the open mic sessions (which I now think should be more organized). I have no authority over the peanut, I'm just making suggestions...
Everyone knows that the crowd at the peanut has changed. I think that the people who've been coming to the peanut on a somewhat regular basis for the past four years have noticed that "mean-mugging" and bad attitudes have become more commonplace.

Fuck Capitol!
I'm trying to make a point.
This is bigger than $$$. Maybe you have another spot you like to kick it at, but for me there is one spot that I'd like to think is my home for HipHop. Even if nuthin is jumpin.
I've went to the Pnut on a Sunday, when there was like five people in there. I had some wings and heard some dope music. I din't feel like I had to worry about anyone b
bothering me or giving me the.....Eye of the "Man".
Thats my spot.
Kansas City HipHop needs a lot of love and support right now. All Im saying is that when shit like this goes down. The HipHop scene as a whole takes a shot. When I was telling someone about the Peanut, they brought up Skybox. And was like, "Yeah eventually "they" are going to shut "ya'll" down. No more Hip Hop."
Even though the Buzzard has an average of three fights a week.
So a rumble is the last thing any HipHop venue needs. But it hurts worse when it happens around and in a group of non-violent per-say people.
I felt like the Pnut had one of those signs up somewhere that stated like "Over 236 Violent and Beef Free HipHop shows", and the record just got crushed.
It just hurts "us" more than it helps.
I know I'm stating the obvious. Just confused and frustrated about this whole situation. I got absolutely no sleep Sunday night.
I had the same feeling I had when I lost all my clothes in a fire, or the time when i got robbed.

Security is not a band thing. First off a good bouncer should blend in and try to keep the peace, but when that fails someone has to be liable.....who better than the hosting venue and guess who......security.
Guns are a bad idea. This isn't NYC and if the DJ carries a gun why shouldn't I.....I mean the DJ gets to.
Once again any place that serves alcohol will run into this type of thing from time to time....then throw in people glorifying being gangsta and movies like 8 mile.....it will happen.
Something important is to keep everything welcoming and inviting because the new people are also the ones that can help make the night and the culture in general grow

What happened on Sunday was horrible. Something like that wont happen again, at least for a really long time. Since it already happened once, the staff, dj's and others will watch out for sketchy things that might lead up to the same thing in the future.

first...
open mics will be (as always) few and far between on Sundays.
When we do have them, it will be (as always) unplanned and entirely at
the DJ's discretion. I can't agree with Nadia more in that open mics are mind numbingly boring for those not participating. (DJ's included.)
We WILL NOT however move for a more organized or structured open mic arrangement as the loose "basement" nature of them is the ONLY thing that keeps it even remotely fun or interesting.
second...
any security put in place will absolutely NOT be hired guns from a firm or any kind of official securty outfit. it should and will be 1 to 2 people whom you will not otherwise notice. Ideally someone who already attends and who most of you already know and respect. Basically someone who may have been there anyway, but in this case will be getting paid for their presence with the expectation that they will attempt to defuse any possible situations that may arrise.
This depends on whether or not the peanut will open the pocketbook to pay for it.
last...
this is not the first time shit has happened at HH&HW.
It is the first time on this scale, but we've had incidents more dangerous than this occur before. Some of you may not have ever known about them as they were quietly addressed and dealt with accordingly, but there has been gun play in the house before.
Mike is right in that this kind of thing can and will happen from time to time anywhere alcohol is served in a public environment.
(Security or not.) Oftentimes hired security worsens the situation. I've seen it many times.
This will not result in a closing of the night. Everyone who needs to be is still in the game and the police are being cool about the whole thing.
Being that nobody acutally filed a complaint, no strikes go against the establishment.
PLEASE CONTINUE TO COME OUT!!!
if you're just too uncomfortable then i'm sorry to lose you and i hope to regain your confidence again one day, but I'm going out on a limb here to say that THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN AGAIN.
IF IT DOES, ANY AND ALL IN ATTENDANCE ARE GRANTED THE RIGHTS TO PUNCH ME IN THE NUTS ONE AT A TIME.
thank you for the support and suggestions.
i love you guys.
paaace.

thanks for the update drew. I like it when the people directly involved in
and with the event communicate the final outcome.
somehow it reestablishes the trust within the community and set the tone for things to continue on . . . . . . ..
well said and I posted the cesphiles info in upcoming events for this coming sunday nite and whole heartedly plan on attending for the fun and to lend supportive energy.

[quote:52acae5eb1="dublow"]No shit. It's a fucking bar. And has no one ever seen a fight before? These things happen from time to time.[/quote:52acae5eb1]
First off... Calm down cowboy...
Check your attitude at the door.
[quote:52acae5eb1]Do I look like Heet Mob? I'm not an emcee, nor should i be expected to play the beats, then run out and regulate turns. We were begged for 2 hours for a mic so all the regulars could spit. Shit was fine with dutch, les, gunny, lou, etc.....everyone was loving it and it had a good vibe like always, only after the wack wannabes got on there at the end did it get stupid.[/quote:52acae5eb1]
I don't have an expectation that you do anything besides be the reactionary member of this forum you've always been. Again, it was merely a suggestion. It's not my place to make decisions for what HH+HW will become.
[quote:52acae5eb1]if you were so knowledgeable that it was bad to have impromptu freestyle sessions, then why were you and so many other people praising us for giving so many people a chance to get on there on Wednesdays when they wouldn't do it on sunday's.[/quote:52acae5eb1]
I praised Barbaric for being a Rap weekly that didn't involve politics. And that, sir, was relative to how well the two of you booked and ran live performances. I never said two words about the open mic sessions held there. But don't let the facts get in the way of your fingers.
[quote:52acae5eb1]when some shit hits the fan everyone tries to point the finger, even though nobody is at fault, except for a small group of people who lack respect and discipline.[/quote:52acae5eb1]
I missed the part where I pointed a finger at anyone.
[quote:52acae5eb1]us and them? yes, us and them...a room of self disciplined adults vs a small group of people rolling around in their own vomit.[/quote:52acae5eb1]
Way to miss the forest for the trees.
Perhaps if you read my posts you'd have a clearer understanding of what I was getting at.
[quote:52acae5eb1]if you had a ton of big brutalizing bouncers running around in the mix, you don't think that would've added to the violence?[/quote:52acae5eb1]
No, not necessarily. I think properly trained bouncers would've helped to diffuse the situation. That's just me though.
[quote:52acae5eb1]what happened is over with....people should stop trying to blame somebody and become more unified.[/quote:52acae5eb1]
And you think this angry ass response is a way to start that process?
[quote:52acae5eb1]and i'm not bring mics anymore since baby's can't handle it.[/quote:52acae5eb1]
You've spent this entire rant going in on me and now you're going to penalize the emcees who deserve and respect the open mic? But I'm tripping?
[quote:52acae5eb1]oh, and a dude chucked a glass a vertigone at the record bar a couple weeks ago.....someone should call the record bar and tell them to only use plastic cups from now on.[/quote:52acae5eb1]
Calling for structure and a couple dudes who know how to properly diffuse conflict is equivalent to the Record Bar using plastic cups...
Sure thing ace.

Open mics are like anything else. Most CDs suck. Most stage shows suck. Maybe it's just me, but I enjoy open mics for the rare chance that I'll see a really dope freestyler amidst a bunch of bullshit.

It's really simple:
1. Pay the cover! Regulars and heads have gotten lax in paying homage to the door. Which leads to point 2.
2. Hire a bouncer, that doesn't work the door. Doesn't have to be armed, but does have to be experienced.
3. Kill the open mic. If EVERYONE doesn't have equal access during an open mic, it's not "Open." Have a couple m.c.s rip it, then put it away.
4. WAKE UP![/color:472812dfa5] It's been nearly 4 years since we (KC Hip-Hop) began this journey with the Peanut, without incidents like last Sunday happening. It was bound to happen eventually. With or without security. Law of averages people.
5. Go back this Sunday.[/size:472812dfa5] Don't allow the few to ruin it for the many.
If all else fails:
Move it to a venue where alcohol consumption is not the main priority of the ownership or it's patrons. Hmmm. I believe the formula is
Liquor + Anger - Common Sense = TROUBLE[/color:472812dfa5]!

[b:661588ee3b]Fight at club breaks the mood but not the spirit[/b:661588ee3b]
There have to be at least seven guys punching and kicking one another right now. I can’t believe what I am seeing. I’m getting nauseated.
The days of neighborhood fights, school rivalries, drug dealers and guns — I figured they were long gone. I know these things still happen, but I never see it unless it’s on the news.
But here I am, just days before Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, at my favorite hangout: Hip-Hop & Hotwings at the Peanut. And I feel like I’m in ninth grade again.
Grown men are fighting over a microphone in an emcee battle. The music stops. The DJs are trying to protect their gear. My companions and I are stuck behind a table of T-shirts trying to help our friend pack up his merch.
And the more people try to break the fight up, the worse the fight gets. Someone is on the ground being kicked. Chairs are turned over. A bottle breaks. A woman screams and cries at the top of her lungs.
I’m having flashbacks of my teenage years. When it comes to violence, the worse year of high school was my freshman year. A kid was jumped and beaten by a dozen boys from a rival neighborhood. A gang of girls showed up to challenge another crew of girls, and a clash of neighborhoods at a football game resulted in a mass pepper-spraying of the student body.
Back then I didn’t know that wasn’t normal. I knew it was wrong, but it didn’t seem like there was much we could do about it. But as school officials locked it down, security tightened and things got a lot better. And once I left high school and all my neighborhood ties behind, I figured everything else would stay behind, too.
But it seems ignorance exists everywhere, and my favorite hangout is not exempt. For nearly three years I’ve been going to the Sunday night gathering of breakers, emcees, DJs and fans of real hip-hop.
It has been a safe haven for music nerds of all cultures, people who care about lyrics, the proper form of a six-step, graffiti art and turntablism. It’s sort of a hip-hop version of “Cheers.â€
I never thought I would see the day when it would fall victim to such barbaric behavior. It was disheartening.
The degenerates who started the fight were long gone by the time the police arrived. And they left proudly, screaming at us about how they kicked butt.
Left to deal with the aftermath were the regulars. Grown men looked outraged and some on the brink of tears. Women were distraught and disgusted. We felt invaded, like someone had come into our home and ransacked it.
Everyone was standing around, trying to make sense of what we had just seen, but there was none to be made.
There are people who are going to want to make sense of it by blaming the music.
Well, I’m sorry to break the news to those people, but this fighting isn’t incited by the music. Maybe it’s the code in gangster rap or gang lifestyle, but it’s not the norm at the Peanut and it’s not the lifestyle of most of the hip-hop lovers who go there on Sunday nights.
But as I look at all the problems at clubs that play rap and hip-hop, places like Kabal when it was open, Skybox when it played to the hip-hop crowd, the old days of VI, Club Chemical and Kandi, it’s clear there is a problem.
Martin Luther King Jr. said a riot is at bottom the language of the unheard. And a lot of these fight-prone people come from the forgotten neighborhoods, from the broken schools, from parents barely making the ends meet.
There’s a problem in the way kids are being raised, in the type of men young boys become, in the type of women young girls want to be.
There’s a a hole in the soul of an entire generation and it affects us all.
The hole is too easy to fill with ignorance, disdain for humanity and disregard for self.
The hole needs to be filled in healthier ways.
I don’t have all the answers, but I know the solution isn’t to shut down every club that plays hip-hop, to ban certain rap or alienate a group of people based on how they’re dressed. That’s hate trying to combat hate.
Days like this remind me just how far away we are from the dream King had. But we can still get there, if we use the wisdom he left behind.
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness,†King said. “Only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.â€

question, how do we begin to love what we deny exsist? I keep trying to have a conversation about "the divide" in the hiphop community that can lead to somewhere other than stalemate and sure enough it just keeps leading to another stalemate with no directions or thought of change.
frustrating at best really
is it time for a citywide detente within the larger hiphop community?
American Heritage Dictionary - Cite This Source - Share This dé·tente (dā-tänt', -täɴt') Pronunciation Key
n.
A relaxing or easing, as of tension between rivals.
A policy toward a rival nation or bloc characterized by increased diplomatic, commercial, and cultural contact and a desire to reduce tensions, as through negotiation or talks.

A bar fight at the Peanut probably means the end of Kansas City hip-hop (for hipsters)
Nadia "Not so fast, it hurts" Pflaum co-opts hip-hop language in order to report a bit of a scuffle at one of Kansas City's favorite hip-hop hangouts. Whereas Country Music bars have never been home to a scuffle, a fight at one of Kansas City's most popular hip-hop hangouts most likely spells doom OR a lot more people at the Record Bar.

I think the issue here is that Bear might have been using the upstairs when the owner didn't want the upstairs used. So maybe she felt a bit betrayed by old Bearski, and in turn decided to put her foot down as the owner.
The article does paint a vivid portrait of what happened and i a fragile lady who doesn't know the scene and what happens at HH+HW is prone to freak out on a number of things not just an article.
I think it's up to the staff to keep the owner keyed in to the good things that happen at HH+HW. Last Sunday was a brilliant example of how it goes down at it's best. It's fitting that such a great night should follow a night of chaos.
The Peanut has supported this night for this long i would hope they would fight to keep it. There is only so much we can do as patrons. Maybe pay for drinks for once...hahaha.
anyway....this will work itself out i think.
