I respect Wicked's opinion because it is true that djs who have never purchased a single piece of vynil can buy serato and copy someone's harddrive (which i don't advocate) and easily have all the classics without digging.
If we the veteran djs do not embrace technology, then we will be left behind and not advance our skills as djs. Innovation is good!

I dunno about u guys up top, but i completely understand and stand behind this dude 100%. I mean yea I'm on Serato, but I definately paid my dues. Collecting vinyl since 15 up to about 3 years ago.....
I totally agree and have said VERY VERY OFTEN on this forum, if you never touched vinyl, before you bought serato...you got no business standing behind the decks...

if you're in it for money, popularity, or to just be "the dj" move the fuck along to another hobby.

I'm sorry but I don't agree with trying to restrict an entire culture to just one medium. To me THAT'S not Hip Hop.
And I've been buying records since I was 7!

i'm not saying restrict an entire culture.
i'm saying do what you love doing as a dj. i mean people giving him shit, like, clowning him for using records, or saying, oh that track list is retarded and shouldnt be in a club, or how you gonna make money u broke ass.....
ignorant people who only see one side of djing. he's not saying noone should play top 40, he's saying its not his style.
also.....as far as the culture
if you're playing for soley money, popularity, and such....ur not apart of the culture. no at all[/quote:d0a9cbd9a6]

OK...while you at the job of protecting our planet, hip hop staples lke fat beats, beat street, sand box, etc are dying due to wack digital dj's, plus the average indy artist loses a significant portion of revenue, ultimately adding another death blow to the underground movement.
Real DJ's will never abandon the wax and these times more than ever have proven who was dedicated to the preservation of the art from day one and who was in it for other reasons.
Props to all the real dj's who still dig in the crates! [/quote:d0a9cbd9a6]

I've actually thought of this myself and see it from several angles.
anyone who regularly dj's clubs with turntables will save themselves many back problems by using a digital dj interface and also have more tracks on hand as a result
digital music is easier to catalog and takes up far less space
for production and not breaking copyright laws while still preserving the origins of sampling and scratching it is a good thing to be able to scratch someones voice that was just recorded or a guitar riff that was just recorded. that will do nothing but push the art forward.
dj's aren't the only people who buy vinyl, but they buy a lot
there's tons and tons of vinyl out there waiting to be discovered, but if people stop buying it, the vinyl will disappear

it's turning djing into pottery.
i'd expound on that, but i don't feel like it right now. i'll just say that sometimes practicality is bittersweet.

I really would like it if you did.
I can't tell if people really love it. Or really hate it.
I dont really scratch but I know what people like to hear. I've DJ'ed several parties and weddingings. But I obviously didn't have to scratch. I usually use my Mac and a turntable. So I use both. but I dont have Serato. Don't need it though.
Sometimes I do a lot of beat matching (like mixing, say, the Pogues with some DJ Qbert, it seems to be a crowd pleaser), but I usually just try to keep the vibe nice. I like to see people dancing.
Usually its just what sound good. But I hear things like.
**MPC is to Vinyl as is Ableton is too Serato.
Its all digital, not organic.***
I've also talked to other Producers and beat makers and they say its about what ever sounds good.
But whos digging in crates? I recently found this record store that sells funk and soul vinyl, slightly damaged for $1.00, Its been good for me. The lady who runs the joint said her sons friend is bringing in all his old vinyl, cause he switching to serato.
I've also had to transcribe about 30 records for this kid, going strictly to mp3s(serato).
I also am now the owner of almost every old school rap song you could think of.
I guess it boils down to what you do, and who you are trying to please.
- Dec 8, 2007 09:55pm by phism
well, it's like how pottery is just something for connoisseurs now, whereas people used to make it to uh... put things in.
like, i only use vinyl because i think it's honorable and i think digging is part of the culture and all that... especially now that there's less vinyl to be found. i like to play things that some people would wonder where i found them.
that being said, i'd also really, really like to be able to find some shit that is impossible or nearly impossible to get on vinyl, just by downloading. so it makes plenty of sense to use serato. especially since i'd probably save the amount of money it costs, just by not buying a bunch of records. (you guys don't actually purchase mp3s, do you?) also, furthermore, moreover, crates are heavy and i'm a feeble man-boy.
and i'd like to be able to play stupid shit that doesn't exist on vinyl, such as Dead Mike's perennial classic, "I'm Black, Y'all"
bottom line, i want something of that sort, but not yet. i mean, i need to get decent PA speakers first.

I used to be a vinyl only for clubs junkie and I hated on serato until i messed with it. I mean for carrying crates for almost 15 years, its a blessing on the back. I can walk in with my laptop and a backup crate just in case and have a large variety of music instead of having 3-5 crates a night. Plus it saves money, what records i didn't get from the record labels i would have to buy and before I was being services by the record labels, I would drop at least 200-400 a month on records to keep up with new releases(that not includes driving) Don't get it twisted,i still dig and shut down record stores at least 3 days a week in this city and when i hit the highway i smash private collections and stores(i've been comming up here lately the og copy of 1st draft by dilla unplayed in midtown, the jb's promo with james brown shouting out dj's in 1973, j live bragging writes remix with joc, classic latin soul). It also easier to deal with when you travel, you can carry your laptop with you, if you're flying you cant carry on records if it doesnt meet carry on requirements and I have heard plenty of horror stories including d.i.t.c,joc, and others of how airlines loose crates of classics so serato is the way to go. Many U.S. record labels love serato because it helps them save money because vinyl has been considered a loss for the pas 20 years. The label rep can e-mail a song at 4 and a dj can play it in the club that night. It also help out local cats because pressing up a 12" is costly and cd's are costly. You can walk to a dj, have your music on a jump drive and a dj can play it that night with serato or rip it from cd. Ace I do understand you and th spot your talking about, i try to go support her once a month every sunday because i still support record stores plus i always find something there be it records, toys or black americanna items. On serato, i have heard some great dj's and i have heard some suck ass ones who just got the software to be cool and don't know the first thing about beat matching and playing other peoples mashups and claiming that its theirs(that is prevalent in this city, if your gonna do it, make sure the mashup is in the same key).Lately it has been an overabundance of records because i heard the new york market is flooded because cats are ditching their collections left and right. I have heard about that happening in other markets causing the prices of classic wax to go down(records that used togo for 30-50 now can be found for 3-10 dollar range).Ace that night you heard me play at the peanut, i was on serato and it was my first night on it. I mean it's based on the dj, the mode, how he knows how to work a crowd is the basic, I can sound organic with serator or with 5 crates of record. its all about the vibe you create because in reality, some way or form we all play the same records, its about making the people move and making them forget about their issues of the day, problems of the week and having a good time.

yes! pretty much.
Thats why i posted the question. the dude i transcribed those records for, was doing some hardcore hating when they (cd mixer/turntables) first came out. He swore he would never leave the vinyl alone. (which he denies), he got several DJ gigs, saved some dollars. and bought Serato last week.
now Serato is all he swears on.
I think i seen him making out with it.
- Dec 9, 2007 07:41pm by DjShad
the thing with cd turntables is that you have to burn the cd and you have to haul books of cd's with you, I know guys who used to haul 5-10 books of cd's in a duffle bag(shouts to rocwell the original cd dufflebag man). Serato gives you the freedom to bring your laptop full of mp3's and rock a party. Cd's skips along with computer has malfunctions but for the better investment serato is the way to go plys you can use it with cd turntables. plus you can be in a club that has wi-fi someone can email you an exlusive right out of the studio and you can rock it that night without them leaving the studio and driving to the club.
- Dec 9, 2007 08:44pm by DR.T - nuts .. haha Location: KCMO
Hmm.....given all this info, I would say that Serato is definitely making DJs more lazier, but hey, if you can make good music with a rock and a stick of gum go for it, just because you can scratch mp3s from files doesn't make you hot. It could be handy but, if you get beat in a dj battle with a cat with a belt-turntable, what does that say...
but Better Super powers doesn't make you a better superhero (if that makes any sense).
Do what you have to do to make good hip-hop... (thats my verdict)

Here is DJ Premier's thoughts from scratch magazine
With Rane's Serato, there's a lot of microwave DJ's out there with MP3's. But Serato is, to me, something you have to earn. I'm like "have you dug in the crates? Do you have at least 2,000 records? Did you ever have to carry all your speakers and crates to a gig?" If you have, then you can graduate to Serato. Here's your medal. - DJ Premier
my thoughts....
Me and Jt had this conversation a while ago and he brought up the point of playing out and palying that rare funk 45" or rare hip hop 12" and having some bumping the table or trying to talk to you and arm causing the needle to drag across the record. I've had it happen at the peanut plenty of times, rocking the crowd and the floor is not that sturdy especially upstairs and when the breakers are feeling it and start grooving hard and rocking the floor making the record jump with the best needles and 2 quarters on it. I rater drop 10 dolars and buy another control record than pay 20-500 to track down another copy of a rare hip hop 12 or funk 45". I mean if you ask the person to pay to replace it, people get the duuh dumb look on their face. I have lost plenty classics that way, plus the time and effort to find them again has been countless. I had a situation where the sertato record was scratched, i charged the dude for messing it up 10 dollars and rock the b-side until i got a replacement the next day
- Dec 10, 2007 12:52am by _DEMENCHA_
You can rip all your vinyl into serato, rip all your cds, and play mp3s on a pretty much virtual vinyl interface. You're still using turntables, and the "feel of vinyl" is not lost.
Plus you can organize the shit out of all your music, and like Shad was telling me a while back, he "can go in any direction" when playing.
Quit fronting on serato.
Plus, I heard that a lot of the big record companies are cutting back the number of vinyls they press up, in essence forcing the DJs to get with the new technology.
PEACE

I can see where the old school heads are coming from, but I don't think Serato can make you a better DJ, if we're talking about technical skills (scratching, mixing, etc).
The cream will rise to the top, whether they're playing vinyl or digital. It's those fuckers making perfect mixes on ableton that you have to watch out for.

I've been doing the digital thing since 2003 when Final Scratch came out and pioneered everything. I couldn't even afford a laptop back then in college so I dismantled my desktop and put it in a suitcase and took it to the club every weekend to rock. Back then it was running on a linux partition and I never really had any problems, but I had another friend who wasn't so lucky. Serato came out a year or two after that I think. I passed it up again this year and got Traktor Scratch which I liked a little better. Pretty much every company has a system now and they're all getting pretty much the same.
I think it basically boils down into several DJ categories:
1) bad Dj's with records
2) good DJ's with records
3) bad Dj's with Serato
4) good Dj's with Serato
Serato won't make a bad Dj good.
A good dj on serato will be a good dj with records...b/c it's the same thing
Serato doesn't make scratching easier. If anything, harder, because there's a little lag in the record you'll notice if you've done a lot of scratching on analog records. note: i can't notice any lag on Traktor. Numark's I hear it tight too, and Serato is going to tighten up their time code I think to improve on this issue...if not already done so.
Dj'ing with 2 decks and a crate of records is easier than throwing a laptop in the mix. Technology will quickly fuck you....but can also breed new creativity into the art. Being able to play your own remixes?!?! Live looping on vinyl?! Effects and scratching instant vocals?!?! All this shit still blows my mind and after 4 years of using it, i still don't know how it works. and maybe one day i'll have enough creativity to utilize it all.
I think any dj who says that going digital is not "real" or whatever is probably a piss poor dj to begin with. If you rock a party on 2 decks and some vinyl, you'll def be able to rock a party with 2 decks and the equivalent of 10,000 records for any situation you might need to be in.
If you are trying to diss technology and be such a purist, then put away your fucking iphone or blackberry and stick to the Zach Morris phone. Didn't think so.....so get with the times, it's ok to watch cultures evolve, don't be scared.

[quote:37c92f7eab="DjShad"]the thing with cd turntables is that you have to burn the cd and you have to haul books of cd's with you, I know guys who used to haul 5-10 books of cd's in a duffle bag(shouts to rocwell the original cd dufflebag man). Serato gives you the freedom to bring your laptop full of mp3's and rock a party. Cd's skips along with computer has malfunctions but for the better investment serato is the way to go plys you can use it with cd turntables. plus you can be in a club that has wi-fi someone can email you an exlusive right out of the studio and you can rock it that night without them leaving the studio and driving to the club.[/quote:37c92f7eab]
yeah, really the only reason to ever have a cd player when djing is for when you're at a house party or something like that where somebody comes up and wants you to play some cd that sucks. so basically, you shouldn't have one, because you need that excuse.
you also should probably bring a few staple records/compilations anyway if you have serato, just because it's going to be a minute if the computer fucks up.
the main reason i plan to stick to vinyl, for the moment, isn't for actual djing, it's because i'm addicted to buying records.
however, my back hurts.

i rather serato than those ipod djs... i see some many people getting up on stage with their playlist and getting paid... please don't get mad but i think serato just might of kept 1000000 djs in a job

I used to be a Serato hater. I gave in about 6 months ago. I love not carrying 11 crates to the club.
What i hate now are these punk ass "dj's" that buy a laptop and get serato and "microwave" there whole sets!! These "dj's" are making it very hard for skilled dj's to make a living. I mean these "dj's" are getting gigs and getting paid $100 for 5 hours worth of music. ARE U FUCKING KIDDING ME?!!!!...$100??? Thats bullshit ass money!!! Now it seems like club owners are completely oblivious to the real dj's that can get any room poppin with one record when they ask for $300 a night.
We all know there are some TIGHT ass dj's in KC and some of them find it hard to find work in their chosen profession.
SO TO ALL YOU FAKE ASS WANNABE ASS "DJ'S", PLEASE GO BACK TO YOUR BASEMENT AND TAKE THE TIME TO LEARN MORE ABOUT MIXING, CUTTING, SCRATCHING, AND PARTY ROCKIN BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT TO CONVINCE US THAT YOUR A "REAL DJ".
YOU FUCKING FAGGOTS!!!!!
Serato both killed and birthed the evolution of dj culture.

sku i feel your pain, cats have no respect for the hustle. Man we can just have a sitdown just about that. I mean 100 bucks when then average bar pulls in 10,000-20,000 in one night. Its about knowing your worth. Ice T said it best, the entertainment industry is a pimp/hoe relationship. Either you can be a cheap whore/a high paid whore or a pimp. Most of the 100 buck guys are the ones who don't know to handle a crowd or try to impress the girls or their boys or try to prove ther "down" and dont understand that playing certain records can cause a uproard/riot/fight/brawl or all of the above. The cats I hate are ones who try to play other dj's mashups and act like its theres. I hate to see the p&l district so many cats are wanting gigs who can't even mix and i know the suburbs are full of them(thats why i left the market). The 100 dollar cats don't last they get board and when the groupies and noupies(male groupies) don't ride their jock they get board. The game is so twisted right now, ive heard of cats taking gigs for bar tabs you might as well get the vasaline and bend over..... SOme cats i can understand because the bar is small and your building a night, but others its no excuse. I've been there sku trust me, ive been thought many droughts, it will be over. The market is flooded with dj's right now but the ture artists will stand the test of time. SKu its funny sometimes when cats sit at the club and write down your whole set and you go out and see them try it and fail at it. Damn man 11 crates,s hoooot, man im good serato a hard drive and my uberstand and my 1 crate of emergency records. Man sku i got countless stories of when i tell clubs my rate and that business as to be discussed with my manager and when i actually sit down and talk i can't be bought with food or liquor it messes with their minds
peace and it was good seeing everyone last night and thanks to those who came out
