*Outkast, is another 1-2 solid projects from being the greatest Rap group of all-time.
*Snoop Dogg's last album was his best since his debut.
*Busta's last album was incredible.
*Keith Murray is wack now.
*The subject of women makes for better Rap songs than anything else I can think of.
*Tupac was the most passionate rapper of all-time, but he was never as gifted as his contemporaries.
*Scarface is the best storyteller Rap's ever known.
*It Was Written was a classic.

SR runs a close second or third for my money.
Scarface painted pictures so vivid.
"Never Seen A Man Cry" was brilliant.

** Mos Def is one more subpar album from being a has-been
** Kweli without Mos Def = just not the same
** Ras Kass' ability to impress has declined as the years have passed
** Had Blackstar remained a group, we wouldn't even mention Outkast in the same sentence with them
**Muddy Waters was Redman's best album and is VERY underappreciated
** Illmatic and It Was Written are EQUAL
Illmatic because it is possibly the greated hiphop debut album ever and It Was Written because it IS THE BEST sophomore alum EVER and ushered in a whole new style.

IWW was a more complete album than Illmatic.
- Nov 14, 2007 11:00pm by phism
we've had the illmatic vs. it was written debate so many times on here. i'm sticking with illmatic. his flow is so much more effortless. and it was written is a little overproduced for me, not as gritty. and illmatic is more humble and easier to identify with as an average person instead of so much money talk. i also like that it's only 10 songs. and only one guest spot.

Swag has replaced skills
Common is uninspired, and has been since EC dropped
Lupe Fiasco is great at rapping, but not making songs or albums for that matter.
Jay-Z IS the greatest rapper of all time
Wayne is not, better is very good.
Rakim will never drop another album, The Seventh Seal isnt real lol

*OutKast has been the greatest group for years....Best albums, Most Consistent, etc.
*Tupac had better content than most of his contemporaries... Damn I miss content from mainstream Hip Hop!!!
*Nas is the best storyteller, then probably Slick Rick or Biggie then Face.
*No emcee Dead or Alive is a better emcee than Pharohe Monch!!!
*Boots from "The Coup" is extremely underappreciated
*Ghostface is one of the most consistent emcees (album wise)of this era.
*Kool G Rap is the best emcee from that era whose skills are still holding weight. He'll easily murder all those old school cats now.
I still get chills from that verse off mobb deep's 'murda muzik'
***lionel richie.....LMAO!!!!!!!!!
*JEAN GRAE is one of the top 5 emcees right now!!!

Scarface will always be a classic mc i think hes better than nas, big, and hov, Even thought people hate he's from the south, dude is a true essence of a mc and knows his business side of the game and still owns the masters to all his releases. all i can say is listen to The Diary
Mc Breed-Where is he, I miss I gotta Get Mine(one of the few mc's pac ever collaborated with)
Crucial Conflict-Their new cd is amazing(got an advance from the group)
DA Smart-WHen when the truth be told he is one of the few who actually battled KRS-1 and ripped him a new one
JUICE-The coldest Mc of All Time
Juke Music-Quit hating it is going to be the next big thing so sip on the hateraide and repect that close friends and familes are about to eat..
Ras Kass-The unreleased tracks from 9th wonder are amazing( i got a few-keep checking the show me mixshow in a few weeks)
Redman and Yukmouth-??? I know they colab in 97 on the luniz joint but now
Jay Z-I know is one of the best tracks on the cd
Yuaaaah-Snap and Roll and ringtone rap is crap but its my guilty pleasure
TI-Drug Related One of the best Hip Hop tracks this year(get what you can and get the f out of here)
Freeway and Lil Wayne-Step Back-That Track goes so hard i can't front(respect to don cannon on the beat)
Local underground rappers-why do i have to beg you for music, i'm tired of asking and begging for music, i'm not asking you to sweat me, but damn my e-mail address is [email protected] if i can hit gold and platinum rappers(twista, murphy lee, chingy, willie d,phonte) and classic soul(fatback band, colonal abrams) and rappers in other markets and they send me music, shouldn't you be on your hustle and get the the tracks, im in the market and playing 2 clubs and mix every week on one station and sometimes on the other, how can i expose underground cats to the mainstream if i don't have your tracks or do you want to have that dope song sitting on your harddrive wondering why no one outside your circle know your tracks
Nas-Lets face it AMG originally killed that sample in 99 for his surving the times
Lionel Richie-Can't Hate man is still surving off publishing and even krs-1 has sampled him(booty call soundtrack)
Chicago-Can't wait to go there next week to rock a club, chill with fam and see alot of the rappers/dj's i'm cool with
Murs-His new track sampling the 4tops is great
Lupe Fiasco-Highly Overated but still dope
Common-I guess acting is his calling now
No ID-I'm happy to see he's eating by doing commerical joints
D. Baker and Lil Ronnie-Making the KC Sound wordwide without people in this market knowing
Stage shows-Have your shit prepared, watch james brown or rick james live and learn hand signals to go to next track without the crowd knowing to make your show flow better
Everybody and their mother doing a show with 3-5 dudes on the mic,(steve harvey said it best 5 temptations 1 mic still rocked the show)
Bo Hagon-One of my fav new school southern rappers who is quite entertaining
Erykah Badu-Honey One of her best tracks in a while
Can I Get Open, Hawaiian Sophie and Feelin It-WHy are people forgetting about those tracks
Sorry for the long rant
peace

Mac Dre is a genius-1st rapper to record from jail, get stupid, hyphy dance i can go on
Mr Fab-Lets face it royce is not a great rapper,he got lucky by riding enimem's jock, bom might have been his only good track. Lets show Fabby Davis Jr Some Respect royce is nice on the written but in a battle well
Bay Area- They got their business down pact from e40 and too show showing them toe way to do it indi, working with kids in the scools and working with community radio and mom and pop stores and smaller markets we can learn from this
People hating on Juke/Baltimore/House,etc- lets not forget every underground major rapper in the late 80's and early 90's had a hip house joint that some of you still dance to in the club today. I.e. Big Daddy Kanes Raw,Latifah-Come INto My House,Heavy D Now THat We Found Love,Craig G-Lets make this house into a home,Main Source-Lookin at the front door,Fast Eddie Hip House 89,Public Enemy-Can't Do Noting for ya man, EPMD Im Housing, A Tribe called quest-had a few house tracks and they used to always hang out in the house clubs in chicago back in the day.
Read A Book-I made that record a hit in the clubs here..HA

As the story goes didn't "Planet Rock" pretty much single handedly start house music?
Plus remember "Good Vibrations" by Marky Mark And The Funky Bunch? If that's not hip hop I don't know what is
- Nov 15, 2007 05:32pm by DjShad
nope, house was before planet rock, it started in 78-79 buy a guy named robert williams who oned a club in chicago called the warehouse and he had frankie knuckles who was spinning at it. People started asking record stores for the records that were being played at the venue or used the term house for short and that is a brief history of how house began. planet rock influenced alot of the miami/atlanta bass sound on the early 80's.

* - Jay-Z is dope, but overrated (to be honest, I compare him to Tila Tequila, in the fact that people believe he is the dopest there is...simply because he says so) YEAH I SAID IT! ......Nyugga! No regrets.
* - Lupe is a gonna be the new Jay-Z (only without the Ego, money, clothes and without the overatedness)
* - Kanye West is NOT the new Preemo.
* - Common needs to loosen up a bit and not be so serious all the time.....
* - 9th, Tay, and Pooh, need to do a reunion ep (or something)
* - Nas sounds like John Robinson (and also needs to loosen up)
* - Kansas City needs more exposure (just incase yall didn't know)
* - Lil Wayne needs to not do SO many street joints (and stop calling Baby his daddy)
* - Immortal Technique needs to eat more raisin brand.
* - More Rappers need to put out acapella versions of their albums
* - Dr. Dre needs to stop pumping iron, and get back on that beat hustle
* - Talib will NEVER go out of style! Talib will still be hot when Common, Nas, Jay Z...phizz out....(I bet money on that)

There are a lot of dope emcees that are walking the streets in Topeka, Lawrence and Kansas City looking for production and the ability to record but "the real hip hop heads" wouldn't think about recording someone for free or giving a beat out for free even if it means making a classic song

regardless of whether or not it sucks, i have no problem saying that neo-soul is fake.
also, don't date erykah badu, she'll turn you into a pastel bellboy.[/quote:69df5cda4b]
If you think Neo-Soul suck. then you don't have a soul. this means you have never shed a tear over the death of anyone you love. i have no problem admitting I cried a little when i heard about ODB.
You cannot relate to being made fun of all your life for having nappy hair.
(Miss India nailed it on the head, pun intended)
[u:69df5cda4b]I am not my hair[/u:69df5cda4b] is such a positive uplifting son, not the whack ass Akon version either.
Neo-Soul is Church Music for Hip-Hop, Say what you want but I've gotten mad play for switching from playing like 20 Rap songs and then Putting on some Badu's "Love of My Life".
If Neo-Soul Suck then So does Rock and Roll. R&B is for sissies and Shut up already.
If you don't feel Neo-Soul you can't possibly feel the "Black" struggle. Neo-Soul is the new old negro spiritual. Songs about life, love, and hope!
If you diss it, you might as well sing your raps in Black face.
Tell Dave Chappelle they suck. you have seen his block party right? Shit was hot and way on point!
As a matter of fact the next time you getting ready to get down with a [u:69df5cda4b]real[/u:69df5cda4b] Hip-Hop female, say that shit. see what happens.
Say that to the regular females at HHHWings.

Fuck What You Heard or Think: Trystyl's Local Addition
DayShift have made a Mid West style rap album meets 90's beats.
Les and Reach need to do Fame 2.0 for '08
Nocab Nivek will never be complete... I am stupid
Mac's album is hands down straight genious but takes a min for the lightbulb to finally pop in your head.
Vert is the best producer in the city but sits on beats
Swayz is the last person you would ever expect to see rip so viciously.
The young cats are hungry
Mac and Ces should do an album
Ces still murders live shows better than anyone
Lenny D makes the most hype and well structured beats ever.
Reach is the most well rounded mc in the city
I want a new Sounds Good album soooo bad
Toon is the most well known mc with no product, and he is an asshole.
Sco is a vet like noone else. And answers to no one. Mad respect.
Bro Mo murders symbol heavy tracks flawlessly.
Klue is one of my fav producers ever
BB needs to make more beats because I miss hearing them.
opus is the best place to go when you need somone to give you the best quality product available... and needs to make more beats and quit sitting on them... and needs to hurry up and marry jess.
I would die of happiness if there was ever a underground rr/hha/proles reunion album.
Approach is on the next level but i wish he would not have dipped.
SG has a horribly disgusting sense of humor but makes bangers
Luna is straight gangster and i am glad he is a homie and not an enemy
Panic writes ridiculous verses and should do a full solo album
Head Fella and DRT will end up being the next gen producers if they continues to grow
Les is a hustla and middle of the map is my joint
Info is hella sick live and with BBM will be off the chain
thats all i can think of now... and there is a good chance you hate me and i hate you.

i'm not saying there's not some gems out there. some of those songs i love. "on&on" at 4am is sublime. it's not that i won't give it a chance.
but as a genre, it's kind of bullshit. it's a lot of self-righteousness covering up self-consciousness. i'm not going to take somebody on the street seriously if they're walking around saying "I AM GOING TO BE AS BLACK AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE", so why should i bother to listen to it. that's not to say people shouldn't be involved with their culture, or afraid to discuss it, but a lot of it is just downright corny.
i agree with a good percentage of the things they say. it's just that i don't see that the way they say it is novel in any way, or difficult to say. embrace your culture, yeah, get a job, stop getting your hair straightened and did up to look like a plastic palm tree, don't shoot people, whoopdy-shit. it's all nice, and i can understand having one or two songs about it, but there are probably bigger problems in your life personally, or in the world at large. that's why i see much [i:bdefcd59e1]less[/i:bdefcd59e1] soul involved. those are easy topics. i think i'm done talking about this, because it could go on for a while.
in a lot of ways, every genre, or music in general is 99% crap, so it's not really worth saying one type or another sucks. i just think some of these artists put themselves in a position to be untouchable because if you don't like them, suddenly you're america's #1 racist. same thing with like overly-artsy musicians who, if you say they suck, you just don't "understand" them because you've never been to france or done acid or whatever.
the Coup and Dead Prez are better than any of your favorite "social consciousness" rappers and neo-soul attention seekers.

With all due respect, sir......Like I said. You can't relate. Its a Black thang, you can't [u:c6119be23e]ever[/u:c6119be23e] understand!
Neo-Soul [u:c6119be23e]has[/u:c6119be23e] added years to my life. All three of the ladies I mention are true humanitarians if anything. And would embrace, love, and support, the weakest and/or strongest Black man.
Living my life like its golden!
And "I am going to be as Black as humanly possible. Just because you may not have, don't like, or have rejected your culture, don't diss mine.
Your just in it for the ride. I've been called a nigger all my life. Neo-Soul helps me see beyond that and have compasion for people who will never understand. 😉
Hip-Hop didn't give me that attitude! Hope is all I have. Hope keeps me living for another day. Unless you've had to boil water to take a bath, or bathed by candle light, or borrow water from your neighbor for a month, you just won't get it.

I can't say that I've ever heard that tune.
Sure, there's a celebration of Black skin in Neo-Soul records.
That's a by-product of a society that makes us to feel uncomfortable about having it.
There's nothing contrived about that.
That's real life experience.

I'd imagine that living in a society that demonizes what you look like is a fairly substantial problem. That's not to say there aren't other issues one could be concerned with, but that's definitely a part of being Black in America.

Neo-Soul records aren't exactly "en vogue" so I can't see how anyone who identifies with the sub-genre would be 'seeking attention'.

I understand that, I'm not saying that it's not a valid topic. Again, it's just an easy one, and not one i'd base nearly my entire body of music on. It just seems like a person would be intentionally stifling their own personality by actively transforming it into something that is [i:72c0cbd120]outward[/i:72c0cbd120]... acting like you're trying to prove something to the world generally makes you seem like you're disproving whatever it is.
it's like that song that christina aguilera had about calling herself beautiful. 1) it's got a very specific target audience of either people who are insecure about their appearance and place in society, or extremely into showing it off; 2) if you have this song about how proud and confident and valuable you are, it's not a good sign that you had to write a whole song to let yourself know. at the very least, you've still got a few steps to go in the process of getting in touch with your own personality beyond other people's criticisms of you.

Who does that though?
India Arie probably does those types of records most often but they're still few and far in between and hardly define her catalog.

Women often need to affirm their own beauty in this society.
One whose standards of beauty are so stringent.
Again, she's just in tune with the American pulse.
It's difficult to cut against the grain and do songs like those.
Especially for an artist of her stature who has everything to lose.
