I agree with just about everything he said except for his thought on "Curtis". That album was boring as hell.... it was "Money, Gun, Bitches.....(rinse wash and repeat). But I agree with his thoughts on 'Graduation" ...that cd was nice but like KRS said.....I can't relate to all this fashion talk..... and by the way....I just heard Soulja Boy's album...... That album was the SHITTIEST[/size:3d5c0b9227] album I have ever heard in my life....

Haha I feel you on that.....but Im 16 and even though I ain't got a # 1 hit song....real recognize real....and I don't recognized this dude. Not saying im J-Dilla or nobody but damn, this album sounds like it was thrown together in 30 minutes...#1 hit or not...I think this kid gives all young musicians a bad name....Like KRS said....this ain't hip hop.....its commerce.....sounds like to me he just took the ignorance and silliness from other older artist (amplified it and made it "kid friendly")............ but "Booty Meat" is an instant classic.

i think krs goes too easy on a lot of people, and i can never predict which pop rapper he's going to be okay with. he needs to remember that he could eat just about all of them and start dissing niggas left and right the same way he did nelly.

If you think about soulja boy, you have to think about the early 90's and kriss kross all the crank dat is is the 2007 version of jump with more complex moves. BTW My fav is Snap and Roll..yuaaaaah, plus cha-che is right, for his age that is a 17 year old cd, its not like hes gonna break down the theory of aerodynamics in 16 bars. peace dj shad

He lost me after he started trying to delineate what is and isn't Hip Hop. As I've said many times before... If anything ISN'T Hip Hop... It's that. Please explain for me how Kanye's couture fetishes are any different from: [img:ef85d726b0]http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20070311/images/arts-hiphop.jpg[/img:ef85d726b0] Kanye's done more with 1 album than 50 can ever hope to accomplish. The idea that Rap can only be "street" is ridiculous. The idea that KRS One can be the arbiter of what is and isn't Hip Hop is more ridiculous.

like i said...that interview with KRS is entertaining. dude is and has always been fairly dillusional in my book. and i'm not trying to downplay youngins and what they are capable of...but dude is the best self promoter i've seen in years. created everything, including his buzz, all by himself. you got what you think is better music...cool, do your thing. but this kid had everybody talking about it even before the shit went to radio. regional and internet phenomenon months and months ago. all the fucking parodies and shit...are you kidding me? and when i first dropped it at fatso's in lawrence after when i thought it would finally start to get folks going here...i got like 3 folks that new it. 2 weeks later...everyone there wanted to hear the shit. and all the grown folks playing kanye's MTV Video Awards Party...and then Soulja Boy? c'mon now. i think you're downplaying what this kid has accomplished whether you like his music or not. and Shad...my track is YAHH TRICK YAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. first time i heard the chorus with the Timmy from South Park imitation...i pissed myself from the uncontrollable laughter.

"Hustle this, hustle that." I'm sick and tired of hearing that shit! it's not all about how much loot you can make off of an ART FORM! Oppurtunities and times aren't there for every dope emcee to come out and make a killing off of music, or tour or even sell cd's. Some incredible rappers never make it. When was the last time that you heard about Siah and Yeshua playing in KC? Never! That's why I respect people who do it for the elevation of the ART, or just for expression and respect more than I do any cornball trying to make a buck. It not about how good you are at selling yourself. For every shitty rapper on the radio, I can name 10 dudes doing what they do at a higher and more respectable level. Reach, Mac, Stik, CES and Miles may have all acheived some success but it has to have more substance than just getting "out there and make some paper" or people like me will not buy into it. KRS be damned, I grew up listening to him and I respect his OPINION. I don't have to agree with it. I personally thought Kanye's and 50's records could have been better. Neither one of them can hold a candle to Redman's Muddy Water. Soulja Boy can suck it easy. As DJ's, you guys must get tired of having requests for that track and watching motherfuckers stumble around trying to do that stupid dance. As far as hustle, hustle hustle. It would be awesome if everyone who posts here and calls themselves fans of local music would get behind someone and push them up to the point where they could actually make a difference in the local market. A ton of the rock bands in town support each other by going to all of the shows and buying, wearing and sharing all of the merch of other groups. What's more funny than watching people bitch about the current crappy state of Hip Hop, is watching rock bands in Kansas City do a LOT more than than their counter-parts in Hip Hop in Kansas City based on loyalty, respect, artistry and musicianship. Love ya' Cha-Che. This is not an attack on your opinion. My name is Dirge and this is my meltdown. Peas.

Seems to be less ego in rock too, but it's kind of like that when you gotta play with others on a regular basis.

HUSTLE EQUALS MIND OVER MUSCLE But,its not about sitting at home being broke because you do it for the art. You cant reach the people if you just do it for art, i learned that back in the day, i can sit at home, starve and keep my artistry, or i can reach people and inspire them and expose pople to a variety of music. I might drop soulja boy in the club, but i can get off dropping common, kanye, erykah and other joints in the same night. Its about being versatile, and to speak truth 15 years in the game, its about the hustle, you have to get out on your tail and work, show prove and get what you want. We can complain about the major labels, but respct this with soulja boy, he got a record deal off of myspace plays, many artists need to get their myspace hustle up. I respect those i see out there on the grind, those i see doing shows, people who in other city's call me to cosign for local artists, i mean love pays no bills i can use love to pay my light bill. I not asking for people to buy into me, im a normal peson, im no backpacker, im not gangsta or gutta, but i can give a message while playing commercial hip hop. Im gonna be honest, people don't go to the club to hear about problems in the world, that is the reason why there are clubs and bars, we can talk about the issues and have messages, its all about how you do it. Its like the negro spirituals from the 1800's how differend songs like wade in the water had subliminal messages. As a Dj and Tastemaker in the city i love soulja boy and i love most request because i mess with people's minds(i got plenty of stries to tell about messing with drunk people). I get behind plenty local artists but, honesty like the bible says,[b:3db47c5e42] god helps those who help themselves[/b:3db47c5e42]. I can only push a person so far, but ive had it make me look bad in plenty situations(almost getting a certain rapper a deal with no a or artists who ride certain dj's jocks because they feel like someonewont give them a push or ride their coattails. Some artists I have to beg for music and i'm not doing it, if a gold or platinum artists can hit me back for drops, exclusives, hard drives worth of music, you as a locar arists so be able to put music out there. Its alot of people and tastemakers supporting artists and helping them and inspiring them, like the old black poem says get your a.. in the water and swim like me(check that book out when you have time) Peace Dj Shad Urban Soul Marketing and Promotion Violator Juke Squad Dj's Cornerstone 1200's Squad Dj's Hittbreaker Dj's Lord Gang Dj's Mixer 90.1 Show Me Mixshow with Mz. I agree to disagree. Soulja Boy is WACK, dukes! Shit sucks. I understand the rules of the game. As a DJ, you have to play what people want to hear but it doesn't mean that garbage is fresh. I just don't get anyone defending that crap. You guys don't bump that shit at home. You guys don't ride around with that shit blaring out of your cars. You guys aren't putting that trash on when you clean your crib or cook grub for your lady. If you do, my bad! I'm just saying though. It's not just about Soulja Boy. All those gimmic rappers get an epic gas face from me. Actually, Soulja Boy and Hurricane Chris aren't even old enough to get into any club! Why would I want to hear that? I'm a grown ass man! Brother Ali does it for me. Little Brother does it for me. That's what I want to hear when I go out to have a few drinks at a bar that plays Hip Hop. Majority rules though so I'll drink at home and play what I want to hear. Shad, I (ehh) kinda agree with you about the hustle. I live south and mad fools roll up to me getting their hustle(!) on but 9 out 10 times, their shit is garbage. I can't tell you how many 3 dollar cd-r's I've bought from dudes on the corner or at the gas station. They hustle HARD but really most of them should put down the mic. Same old killer, drug dealing, pretty boy playa shit or rap songs about rapping that I've been hearing for years. They work hard. I bought a record off of a dude at 3 in the morning coming home from work. Looked like he'd been outside all night HUSTLING cd's outside of a club. Needless to say, it was crazy bad and I felt sorry that I encouraged him to keep on rapping by giving him my loot. Personally, the LOVE has gotten my beats placed on a bunch of local records. If I like the music, I'll do it FOR FREE! I have a job. I've been on tour and kicked mad raps with all kind of fools but that's not what matters to me. My passion for music doesn't mean that I need dough to feel like I've accomplished anything. Props are good enough sometime. When I started rapping, producing and recording for people that's all that you got. The LOVE has had me play shows in other cities and get PAID. But that was never the point. Talent, drive and results is what means the most to me. I can't stand talking to someone who only wants to have a convo so they can sell me something. Fuck dat! I'm old. 10 years in the game and getting older. Nobody knows me and I'm A-Okay with it! YAY! Love you guys anyway. -Dirge

We're getting a bunch of oversimplified answers people. You can't define another man's hustle. If stacking paper is your hustle, so be it. Making music that satisfies the musicmaker is a different type of hustle. And both of them have merit. Depending on what's important to you. Each person has to make that decision. I understand the importance of doing club records, but I disagree whole-heartedly that they have to be dumbed down to the point that any kid on the street could cut one. Eventually you're going to have records with no aestethic value at all. They're just going to fit the Corporate formula. At some point... We have to find ways to balance club records with some kind of substance. I'm sure some people would like to check their problems at the door when they hit the club; however, I'm sure others would like to check hedonism and materialism at the door. Each is his/her own.
