ET’s ‘Hip-Hop vs. America’ Airs This Week After coming under intense scrutiny for being nothing more than a showcase for music videos that some people consider demeaning, BET is in the midst of trying to alter its image. The network is still taking heat for the likes of “We Can Do Better” (formerly known as “Hot Ghetto Mess”), “Baldwin Hills,” which shows that black teen life can be as simultaneously idyllic and stupefying as the white teen life depicted on MTV’s “The Hills,” “Laguna Beach” and “Maui Fever,” and “S.O.B.: Socially Offensive Behavior,” which has a terrible title but turns out to be a pointed, “Punk’d”-style reality-TV take on race and racial assumptions. In that vein comes “Hip-Hop Vs. America,” a three-part panel discussion about hip-hop’s cultural reverberations through such issues as its treatment of women, crime and violence. Hosted by journalists Jeff Johnson and Toure, “Hip-Hop Vs. America” offers a wide spectrum of voices, including those of rappers, media commentators, reverends (Al Sharpton, A.R. Bernard), activists and at least one well-known academic (Michael Eric Dyson). As hip-hop deals with a decline in sales and a crisis of conscience, discussions like this about where the music and culture are going serve a purpose. But what is problematic is how BET is showing “Hip-Hop Vs. America”: The first two chapters air at 8 p.m. (I think its est)Tuesday and Wednesday respectively on BET, but the finale will be shown on its broadband channel, BET on Blast, following part two on Wednesday at 9 p.m. [img:ab8bd73cf8]http://www.hiphoplinguistics.com/news/2007/images/hiphopvsamerica.jpg[/img:ab8bd73cf8]

You know... I've been watching the entire discussion on BET.com ever since about 11:00PM (it's 12:30AM now), and I must say that it is a very well done discussion that they're having. The topics are relevant and it's nice to see those who would be dubbed intellectuals, thugs, fakers, entrepreneurs, prideful women, and what have you discuss it all in the same forum. If you have not seen any of this - I strongly urge you to check it out. This is not just a main stream hiphop issue. This is an issue I think faces all facets of hiphop music. Go to BET.com and hunt down the videos of this if you have to - you will not be disappointed with what you find. My two cents...

I need it! pm me so we can make arrangements I gots to have [u:67169951bd]hours later[/u:67169951bd] I saw it all on bet.com. thanks ace. I do still want copies of it for the library archive, so if you can tape it let me know how I can get them. well there was some new stuff there and dialogue was for the most part positive. The biggest question I have from it is where to now. we are reflecting upon the inpact hiphop has made so far which is important, because without that piece, we could go another 19 years or more, an never see what we as a culture have been able to achieve against incredible odds. that this has been achieved, its only begs "what will we do with our new found abundance, awareness, perspective and perceptions? if we get stuck here we will have missed the fruits and harvest of our labor if we choose however, to use our new knowledge of self and the workings of the world, we are positioned to make worldwide sweeping changes based on our next steps and actions. afterall, the world culture of hiphop begins its journey in the culture by imitating what happens in the US. if we determine that we will own ourselves, our talent, skills, minds, lifes and shape our lives into a life we WANT TO LIVE, well now that makes our journey to this point worth it all WHO ARE WE BECOMING HIPHOP?
