So a lot of folks got their panties all in a bunch over this video by poet Bomani Armah which is getting airtime as a PSA on BET:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rN2VqFPNS8w
The author, a creative writing teacher in DC, first wrote the song as part of a writing workshop and it was later picked up by BET. CNN gathered a focus group of mostly upper class and middle aged black folks that argued that it stereotypes blacks and that questionable language should never be included in a cartoon video. I find it hard to believe this could be more offensive than the music and the videos that it satirizes. I see this as a poignant critique of the state of commercial mainstream hip hop music and the ridiculous lengths one has to go to reach kids with messages they need to hear. Of course, there's hypocrisy in the fact that this BET-sponsored video is critiquing the very things perpetuated by that network but I don't have any problem with the video itself. Anyone disagree? Does anyone find this video racist, sexist or otherwise offensive?

My bad...looks like I'm several months late on this debate. It's been in the news lately though due to some recent protests.

Protests? Like people have been protesting the cartoon - or is this a run-off of the whole Jena situation?

I find this video very sexist, degrading, ignorant, and jigabooish.
