Topic: Source Mag's Unsigned Hype Tour Comes To KC

  1. Sep 5, 2007 09:00am by DEMENCHA
I was in Westport tonight and some guys were handing out flyers outside the hurricane. They gave me a flyer and said they were promoters for The Source and that The Source is having a contest at the Emerald House on Main on Friday night where they'll pick one singer/rapper from KC (who wants to pay $75 to enter the contest) to advance to another contest in New York where the winner will be the Source's next Unsigned Hype. Regular admission is a whopping twenty bucks!!! The auditions are today, Wednesday, at noon (for more information call 309-253-9281) Just thought I'd throw that out there. Regardless of how you feel about the Source, opportunities like this don't come along very often. PEACE

It's surprising that the Source has the revenue left to mount a tour/talent-finding expedition such as this one. Haven't they filed for bankruptcy multiple times in the last 4 years? [quote:e7c212964d]Regardless of how you feel about the Source, opportunities like this don't come along very often.[/quote:e7c212964d] Definitely true. And whatever utter loss of credibility/department store catalog-appearance/bottom of the barrel journalism problems they've had this decade, people have to remember that around the time I was a little dude REALLY getting into hip-hop (92-95), that mag was like the bible to me and my small circle of friends. First time we had ever heard of BIG, Jay-Z, Mobb Deep, ect... I don't know if they deserve a second (third? fourth?) chance from some of you artists (and fans) or not, but it could be at least an [i:e7c212964d]interesting[/i:e7c212964d] event.

I think there's opportunity to be found in all kinds of places, but The Source simply isn't what it used to be... I'm sure someone will think it's worth the $75 though. Good luck to anyone who auditions.

Sounds like a scam to me and why do artists need to pay $55 more than everyone else.....$20 is overpriced for what it is anyway, might as well toss in an extra $55 to become a superstar rapper....for $55 they betting include the bling and the bling biatchhhhhhhh

I cannot name any of the Source's Unsigned Hypes since Eminem was in it. In 1999. Or 98. Scam.

I agree with D.M. and Mac, and I also wanted to mention that I've been hearing about a lot of pay-to-play "opportunities" for rappers lately that all sound fishy to me. A guy was telling me proudly the other day about how he was chosen to be on this Snoop Dogg mixtape (it's like at www.snoopdoggdemo.com or something) but he had to pay $250 just to be considered. And I couldn't find his track on the site. Have you guys heard of any other of these so-called opportunities? Are they standard in the biz, or do you think lots of people are preying on ambitious young talent who want to be on a CD or onstage by any means necessary? I remember when I was in a journalism class in college, I made a comment to a professor about how I wanted to submit a piece to a magazine and I didn't even care if they paid me. She told me, very sternly, that if you take yourself seriously, you should never, ever give out your work for free. Seems that should apply to the music biz too?

PFP has become all the rage in Kansas City over the last 2 years. Artists are currently coming off ungodly numbers to open for national acts who blow into town. I've heard stories of artists putting up $1500 for 10-minute sets to open for nationals.

It depends on the show, ive talked to people who dropped anywhere from 3000-5000 to open for shows. This market is known for that. I sat though one thing where the the people were naming artists and reps who would be there, the thing was that i knew alot of their management and some of the artists personally and i made a call and they werent showing up to the event that they were prying on local talent on. Alot of local talen have hopes and dreams of getting a deal, but the truth of the matter is thats not happening anymore, its not 1997 where labels threw 30 million at cash money or 10 million to twista(all thanks to wendy day the true hip hop icon). One place i worked at was charging 500 for 15 minutes. Pay to play has always been aorund and to those who don't know they will get over on artists. I had a meeting with a few artists where i tell them why pay 3000-5000 to open, that is a whole cd and promo budget for 2 projects. Another scam has been where they say A&R from national labels would be judges, alot of time those are scams because the scam works like this you get 20 people paying $200-300 entry fee you made 6000 and you give them tickets to sell at 10x20 dollars and if the artists don't sell the tickets they have to pay for them (another 200 from the artists another 6000 and say in order to win sell tickets to get people to vote and get the bigest crowd) thats 12000 right there take out venue cost 1,000 and you have a net profit of 11,000 get a popular local dj(because face it alot of guys are hustlers, im not putting names out there but figure it out a few have been behind the "events") get the artists hopes up get some low level a&r who can't do nothing at the labels(prolly a low end promo rep( i love my promo reps so i'm not talking about you) and two peoples from other makets and pay their way here(lets be real a hotel room and some gates) and thats is how people get over on rappers in the city who don't know. Its sad, i went to 7th heaven a few days ago because i was bored and feeding a record addiction and i went to the local section and it took up the whole back wall so that is how people get over, thats not including the countless cd's i get every weekend with my residency(if you got a crappy attitude it goes to the garbage, i told a rapper in her face she sucked and why give me a cd if your lying and saying she was there last week on a saturday and a white guy was djing, damn i know im like the wayne brady of hip hop in kc but damn.....then lil mama got an attitude when i called her on it). I can discuss how artists are getting screwed on the mixtapes also thats a discussion gotta get back to the 9-5 peace dj shad violator juke squad djs

Artists really are being hosed by these A&R frauds and now recently by local cats. People who've come up around them and know them personally are in on it now. Take them for every penny with very little (if any) return possible.

God I wish I could name drop right now. I know so much shit about this. Shad's examples were wonderful. That's all this shit is anymore. $2500 to open at Club Kandi for T-Pain for 12 minutes. I know too much. Nadia, search and you shall receive. But not through me. It's a pretty dirty game, and I can't involve myself in it or even speaking about it. But yeah, it's all right there. Drug money, strong arming, and a nice 15 minute set opening for people at clubs in the bottoms.

i don't see how anyone is going to go to this to watch for $20. but they've probably got their venue paid for after two or three contestants pay the $75.

The trickle-down theory... It starts with inexperienced club owners and promoters being jobbed by the guest artists they bring to town (who often stick them for several thousand dollars more than their going rate). Most of the clubs, even with high ticket prices, can't so much as break even after bringing these acts. They have to recoup that dough somehow. Enter local artists.
  17. Sep 11, 2007 06:42pm by DjShad
THats is where the hustle come in, like reach stated, you have the local artists who made the finals sell tickets to get their people there to support 10 finalist @$20.00 a ticket and give them 20 tickets to sell, thats $4000 right there. alot of artists don't know the business in this city that is why it gets screwed over time and time again, people don't read contracts, people saying they did the beat and didn't get the paperwork right or lawyers involved, you got people who have a dream, hope, and protools(damn everyone in the hood has pro tools and don't know how to use it). Artists are notorious of getting over in this market but there is a reason for it, alot of artists have been screwed over by promoters, ive heard stories about how artists will be in town and people would use the lame ass escuse we did'nt sell enough tickets can we pay you later(the artists either will take a hit for the fans or be like forget you pay me and sit in the car or won't leave the hotel). P4P is notorious in this city, thats another story you have to research and it involves alot of powerful people and something that is not cold and not jelly(j/k)....don't quote me on this peace dj shad Quote of the day ..."I kinda want to be famous or rich but I don't want to be a star for 2 reason's, stars fall from the sky and what do you get when you spell star backwards.....rats and I dont want to be a rat.."" Wasn't very well attended from what I understand. I got a call at 11:45pm from a friend who said the promoter would allow artists to audition for free until they closed at 1am. That quickly changed though.
