Topic: The meaning of Ay Bay Bay
- Aug 16, 2007 03:33pm by DjShad
Hello everyone,
I've been reading various commentary and I feel its time to speak about the song by Hurricane Chris "Ay Bay Bay'. The reason I feel its time to speak on it because as an early support of the record and meeting the artist, the label and camp and discussing the records, its alot of false facts out there. The song Bay Bay is based of a Dj in Louisianna named DJ Bay Bay. He is one of the most popular radio and club dj's in the Louisianna Area. Every time he would drop a hot record or the crowd was feeling the music, they would chant his name "Bay Bay". He would ask the crowd to say his name and it caught on. It becamse so popular at the club they were chanting it when he wasn't there. CHris and his producer wanted to make a song saluting him and that is how the song came about. If you listen to the song there is a line stating "i'm taking pictures with the dj" out of resepct for the dj and how other artists bypass and don't think the dj is important. And we all know that the dj is the backbone of hip hop. So before we judge alot of the southern records, there are alot of meaning hiding behind the catchy hooks. Meeting with him and his people, there were more down to earth than some of the underground rappers in this scene here. I just wnated to put facts out there. hate if you want, i needed to get the truth out there....I feel the song is a respectful tribute to the dj, even thought its not scratching or cutting in the record, its the respect of having a dj name made into a catch phrase that alot of people are saying, its like the ultimate tribute

The point is, not all southern rap is mindless.
- Aug 17, 2007 03:07am by phism
i still think it's pretty mindless, and i still think it's a shitty song. that song was played out before the track was even over.
and no it's not a dj anthem.
i've heard dj anthems, that is not what they are like.

man I said late the hate begin and it has. Further into the roots into the song the guy who is handing te marketig and promotion is from the Show boys who had the hit drag rap aka trigger man aka the sample tech used for planet rock and they are from new york. The dj has been brought in their management team who the song is about so if a song is out there helping feed family and their kids what is wrong with that. it reminds me of a quote a person told me a long time ago... underground cats are the original haters. It will never be 1982, 1992 or 2002. And the video, i would rather have a low budge video that gives peole a chance to see their kids and family out there and help an area that is struggling that some blinged out million dollar rap video. I met with host of the number one video show in the south last night and we had the discussion about the south, the music, the culture and the rebuilding after katrina. and that song is helping alot of people in that area. So you can think its shitty and "the downfall of hip hop" but fuck it.

quote of the day...."do i want to sit still and bitch and wish about the good old days of hip hop or do i want to see hip hop go to another level. Expand beyond the box because the golden era is dead it will never be tribe again never be pete rock and cl and jay z will never rhyme like can I get open..."
man I hate to see when juke music come to the forefront in a few months....

i hate HARD and you should too.
not everything that's terrible is good, only some of it.
i'm still waiting for the south (particularly the areas affected) to actually start talking about katrina. they're fucking themselves by making it look like everybody still doing fine. rollin on dubs through saturated flesh pieces and home shrapnel. be honest and have a point.
nobody said anything about the good ol' days of hip-hop. some shit just sucks, is boring, and doesn't help anything.

Alot of good people with mouths to feed make bad music, just because they work hard and have children that they're grinding for doesn't mean I have to hype their stuff.
The underground tends to value creativity and innovation, in the end I think that'll be what lifts up hip hop. It's not that the shit doesn't sound like '93, it's that the song is borrrring.
The circumstances are cool, the respect they're giving is great, but that's all I'm going to get out of this song.

Let's talk about underground for a second...
Most cultural phenomenons or music genres, for example, simply start out as regional trends. A small group of people chanting "Aye Bay Bay" in a club in Louisiana, for example. Then people from all over the country start emulating that stuff. That's what underground is. The next time you shake your head in disgust when someone tells you they don't listen to Aesop Rock, just remember there's a guy in KC named Rich The Factor who's selling at least 10,000 copies every time he comes out and he gets NO LOVE from anybody except the people in his hood circle. That's underground. I'm just sick of people thinking they're listening to underground hip hop when the DJ plays the same 30 b-boy records every fuckin night.
Ten years after Three 6 Mafia's "Tear The Club Up" and Juvenile's "Ha" came out, people are STILL hating on the south. It's a never ending cycle that will keep going just like other vicious cycles like racism will do. It will not stop. It's genreitis at it's worst. It's like musical prejudice.
But it's up to us to be bigger than that.
We, as some of us are DJs, take ghetto music from all over the world and say this is the hot shit. But ghetto music in our own country is looked down on.
So if anyone's hating on a whole REGION'S style of music, in no way shape or form are they feeding evolution or creativity. Fuck all that noise.

Theres a difference between "Tear the club up" & " Ha" Compared to a song like A bay bay and Laffy Taffy. If you are dumb and can't see the difference you prolly should leave hip-hop alone. BTW That Common quote had a different meaning you got it fucked up.
- Aug 18, 2007 05:17am by phism
people love rich the factor. i have yet to be impressed. i'd say he's the most popular "underground" rapper we have.
- Aug 20, 2007 02:18am by maclethal
Just because it's a shitty song doesn't mean it's the downfall of hip-hop.
Fuck hip-hop.
- Aug 20, 2007 02:22am by maclethal
FYI, "A Bay Bay" could contain the answer to the Goldbach conjecture, and it would not make it anymore of a thought provoking song.
It could contain a weird recipe for a witch potion that I could burn in the woods to resurrect my dead mother, and it would still be a shitty song.
I got love for Rich.

I think it's interesting that even though the term "Ay Bay Bay" is shouting out a DJ, you still never hear much about the DJ... At least, not as much as Hurricane Chris and the others on the remix... If it were a DJ song, I'd think I would have known that from the jump. Seems as if Chris is promoting the term more for his own gain...
I dont like the song because the verses are ignorant... It would be different if he said somethin cool in the verse but the hook was ignorant.. but this dude dumbed down "dumbing down"... I think he has rapping ability because I heard him do his thing on the remix but... Ay Bay Bay is a no-go.. DJ or not.

From what I understand, "The Bitch In Yoo" is a diss from Common to Ice Cube in retalitation for Cube saying "I'm bombin on Common Sense/ Chicago is mine/ n---- hit the fence" on his westside connection album with mack 10 and wc.
Am I wrong? Or are you just trying to find a loophole for hating on the south?

you're right.
- Aug 20, 2007 03:23pm by maclethal
You are right.
Westside Slaughterhouse dissed Common, so he came back with "The Bitch In Yoo" and then performed it in LA and got all sorts of props for it.
I still can't figure out how thinking "A BAY BAY" sucks means people are hating on the South.
Yes, I think more idiotic music comes out of the South, than not. Because um... it's true. Crime Mob, man.
However, I personally listen to all sorts of South music. I love Dro, T.I., U.G.K., etc. I kinda like Trae, but he needs better beats. I like Z-Ro. I like Three-6.
I don't think Hurricane Chris counts as a Southern force, though. Where does he go from here? There is no identity to his music. He's like the "Party Like A Rockstar" guys. It's ALLL downhill from here.

It's funny how the southern rappers who are lyrical stick around... Scarface, TI, Outkast, ect. Yet the moronic ones with bubble gum bullshit have a career spand of 3 months (hurricane chris, d4l, ect.)
- Aug 21, 2007 05:59am by DEMENCHA
I think I just got off on a tangent. I'm not trying to push "Aye Bay Bay" as something greater than it is, but I'm just trying to defend southern hip hop.
When I see someone take a braod swipe at an entire genre of music, and no one objects, it makes me think that everyone is cool with it.
Mac, you said "Yes, I think more idiotic music comes out of the South, than not." Couldn't you say the same thing for any other genre of music? Or no?
