Topic: the Kansas City Chiefs thread.

  1. Aug 11, 2007 02:15pm by phism
i searched, but decided there needed to be a less-specific, all encompassing Chiefs thread. so, what are you looking to see today? what the hell is going on at fullback? how much playing time is Damon Huard going to see? why is Samie Parker listed to return punts? is Tank Tyler going to look too Christmas-y when his skin turns green? are Tamba Hali and Turk McBride's shifting styles going to be effective at disrupting offenses? speaking of which, i'd like to see more of whatever they call it when the two ends go behind the tackles and run up the middle... that worked pretty well a few times last year... but then again, we were lacking at DT last year and O-lines probably weren't expecting pressure from the middle. what's up with Kyle Turley and why do teams put up with the drama? i think Will Svitek is going to be pretty good. what's our cap situation, and why can't we give LJ some more money? weren't we well under last year? people i didn't already mention who i'm curious about (including the injured): Napoleon Harris, Alfonso Boone, Damion McIntosh, Chris Terry, Priest Holmes, William Kershaw... all the new CBs and Safeties esp. Tyron Brackenridge....

[quote:b642868038="phism"]what the hell is going on at fullback?[/quote:b642868038] The FB situation is a mess, but I think the simplest solution would be for Kris Wilson to retain the job. He's not a conventional FB, but he was productive for the first time in his career and he's probably the best option at that position. [quote:b642868038]why is Samie Parker listed to return punts?[/quote:b642868038] I think they're trying to find redeeming qualities in Parker because he could very well be out of a job in another month. Especially now that the Chiefs have signed AFL all-world Receiver Bobby Sippio (called the Terrell Owens of the AFL). [quote:b642868038]are Tamba Hali and Turk McBride's shifting styles going to be effective at disrupting offenses?[/quote:b642868038] I believe so. Tamba and Turk both have great first steps. They're smallish, but have the penetrating styles necessary to creating consistent pressure on the QB. Turk will move inside after the first 2 games (where Allen will be suspended). [quote:b642868038]what's up with Kyle Turley and why do teams put up with the drama?[/quote:b642868038] Quite simply because the Chiefs have all kinds of uncertainty staring them in the face at both Tackle spots. He's back up to 300 lbs. and before the injury bug bit him...He was a Pro Bowl Right Tackle. The Chiefs will take that chance to try and solidify one of the Tackle spots. [quote:b642868038]i think Will Svitek is going to be pretty good.[/quote:b642868038] Did you see him play on Saturday night? He was manhandled repeatedly... [quote:b642868038]what's our cap situation, and why can't we give LJ some more money? weren't we well under last year?[/quote:b642868038] We're currently 11 million under the cap. That isn't holding up the new contract for Johnson though. His demands are. I think you'll see him sign for close to 22 million dollars in guarantees. Look for that to happen before Week 1 and maybe as soon as next week.

I didn't see much of the first preseason game... how did huard look in comparison to croyle? i know croyle fumbled and threw a pick... ?
  7. Aug 16, 2007 07:23am by phism
i think they both didn't do much. i'm scared of our qb situation. i personally would prefer huard, but i was skeptical of the croyle pick since the draft. this season is just going to be weird. i have no real idea what to expect on either side of the ball... i think the defense will be good, i just don't know what it'll look like, and i think the offense will be bad, but again i just don't know how.
  8. Aug 17, 2007 04:52am by Whatsgood
Gotta love the pre-season folks panicing around town already. We've actually improved if you compare tonights game to last years second pre-season game. Once LJ comes back we'll be ok all we need to do is score 20 a game and we should be golden with our defense. The challenge will be scoring that 20.
  9. Aug 17, 2007 05:24am by phism
we lose all the time in preseason. the only reason i'd have a problem with it is if the chiefs were good enough to be looking at a potentially undefeated season, then it'd be nice to have the preseason match. as of now, uh, i'd almost rather give the rookies something to fight for maybe. printers looked good today. especially hooking up with harris (i think? #30? i just realized we have 4 Harrises) on a couple of those plays. and shrugging off defenders. croyle looked good too. but i'm still not going to take him out of the category of "unproven" until next year. none of our running backs impressed me. so we'll see how that goes when we get either of the other two back.
  10. Aug 18, 2007 01:29am by DEMENCHA
I caught a little bit of the first preseason game and the commentator said the Chief's might have the fastest linebackers in the league. That was good news to me.

An offense that productive will get us back into the playoffs. Don't hold your breath though. Herman Edwards wants a ball-control offense. He's not interested in scoring that often. Brodie Croyle looks like a bright young QB with a ton of talent at times and the second-coming of Ryan Leaf at others. He's going to make mistakes this year no matter how things turn out. I'm just hoping the Chiefs give him good playcalling and creative offensive ideas to help minimize the mistakes. He'll have weapons.

i'm always worried about the other rookie qb mistakes like clock management that people don't really think about until it loses a game.

Most of what Edwards says/does doesn't make sense. I'm just hoping he'll be open minded. Johnson is now signed which is great for his young QB. If he's smart... He won't stifle a group of offensive players who can really put points on the board.

I can understand Martyball with less offensive weapons. But you have the #2 Runningback and #2 Tight End in the NFL. You have a veteran Wide Receiver who can still stretch the field and produce on a regular basis. You have an underachieving #2 Wide Receiver who will make for a dangerous and excellent slot guy. You have a young Wide Receiver with loads of talent who will add a new wrinkle to your offense. And a TE turned FB who is finally putting numbers up. Screw Martyball. We don't exactly have to be the Don Coryell offense of a few years ago either, but I'd welcome the West Coast Offense.
  21. Aug 23, 2007 07:41am by phism
i think the most convincing part of an argument for a west coast offense to me is Kris Wilson. one of the keys to the west coast offense, at least with the niners, was to let your RBs and TEs catch more passes to strain coverage... take Wilson all over the place on some weird plays, if only to draw/block linebackers... plus LJ can catch passes. also, hopefully our kicker won't turn out to be a liability because we could stand to lose a lot of games by 1-3 points. p.s. no disrespect to Croyle or Huard, but if things get really crazy in the contract world, we could always go after JaMarcus Russell (or Michael Vick, ha)
  22. Aug 23, 2007 03:18pm by Whatsgood
Difference is though the Niners ran the WCO so well because Norv Turner is a brilliant OC. I'm not sold on Solari. And yea i'm affraid our kicker will suck.
  23. Aug 24, 2007 03:13am by Whatsgood
We'll be lucky to go 6-10 this year. Not only does this team continue to get owned on the offensive line we aren't getting any push and the effort is subpar.
  24. Aug 24, 2007 05:41am by phism
our O-line is awful. and i told you Croyle is too small. i was joking about the JaMarcus Russell thing but uh....

Croyle needs time to develop. I'm willing to give him a year to sink or swim. He's a Third Round draft pick so you can't exactly give him as much time as you would a Brady Quinn, but I'm willing to suffer through 16 games. This offensive line isn't very good. Once McIntosh returns we'll be a bit more stable. Turley will win the RT job (he's been the most efficient there). Thing is... Can he stay healthy? We've got a solid interior. It's Tackle play that stinks. With McIntosh and Turley on the ends we'll be respectable. The defense will be fine. I'm not worried about that unit at all. We have some young guys on the defensive line that need time to grow, but I'm confident in our Linebacking Corps. They might be the best in the league. I'm also confident in our secondary. QB play and Tackle play (Offensively/Defensively) will determine how far this football team can go this season.

He was basically the QB who threw to Receivers during WR drills. He threw to Holmes as well during his PUP activities. He got a check for a couple weeks. And had an outside shot to maybe stick as a 3rd QB. For him... That's better than not being around the NFL at all I'm sure.

looks like deuce mcallister is hurt. the saints can say goodbye to their season. let's see what griese can do for the bears. adrian peterson (min) is a beast. i had expected tony romo to fall off this year, but i was wrong. i still hope he does, though, because i've always hated the cowboys. and texas. jason witten is good, too. or at least looks especially good with terry glenn out. speaking of which, how bout them texans? mario williams over reggie bush doesn't seem like quite such a bad idea now. the rams and chiefs are both done for, as far as winning seasons go. and for the same reason, too. O-Line. oh, and not to mention that marc bulger and steven jackson are both injured. probably due to the line. actually, i'm curious to see if the chiefs passing game turns into something less hideous now that Bowe is making plays.
  33. Sep 27, 2007 07:31am by Whatsgood
How are the Chiefs done? They're 1-2 in what looks like to be a weak divison. If we win this weekend we'll be in first place (I'm counting on Denver losing in Indy.) We've got the 4th best defense ranking wise and LJ has yet to break out, if he ever does this team is a playoff team.
  34. Sep 27, 2007 08:15am by phism
i expect us to get 2-3 wins of eight division games. namely, the home games, with a good chance we'd lose to the chargers/broncos at home even. i don't see LJ breaking out with the offensive line in the shape it's in. he'll get injured before that happens. he already seems to have something keeping him out of practice every wednesday. i think denver is going to be a little better this year because of cutler, although their defense has fallen a bit... and i think oakland is much improved, we'll see how their QB situation pans out though... maybe you're right though, it depends on how bad the chargers continue to be and whether i'm wrong about denver and oakland being better... so far i like this season because it's been pretty unpredictable as far as teams rising and falling. i just don't think herm edwards understands his own offense. i'm completely fine with martyball. but in order for it to work, you need an offensive line and fullback that can support your running back... not necessarily to do anything flashy, but to eat up the clock so your defense can rest and so the opposing offense has fewer chances to score... plus fewer turnovers. oh, and you need a QB that doesn't turn it over and receivers that don't drop balls. so.... our personnel, on offense, doesn't really match the game plan. probably because it's largely a gradually dismantled shell of the west coast/"greatest show on turf" type of offense we had when we went 13-3 like four years ago...

I can see them winning 9 games. Especially now that they've opened up the offense. This defense we have is something special. 4th in Total Defense. 8th in Scoring Defense.

Of those 6 I expect the Chiefs to lose in Denver and likely in San Diego this Sunday, though that's a winnable game, but I think they'll sweep the home games. Our divisional opponents just aren't as strong as they typically are. This is a weak division this year. It's up for grabs. 9 wins could win the AFC West in 2007. If the offense plays like it did in the Second Half of the Vikings game we can very well wind up in the post-season. This defense is for real. [quote:bf25a2323f]i don't see LJ breaking out with the offensive line in the shape it's in. he'll get injured before that happens. he already seems to have something keeping him out of practice every wednesday.[/quote:bf25a2323f] It isn't Johnson or the offensive line. It's the fact that he's running smack into an 8-man front. Much like LaDainian Tomlinson. That's why they're both struggling. Predictable playcalling that allows defenses to cheat up in run support. [quote:bf25a2323f]i just don't think herm edwards understands his own offense. i'm completely fine with martyball. but in order for it to work, you need an offensive line and fullback that can support your running back... not necessarily to do anything flashy, but to eat up the clock so your defense can rest and so the opposing offense has fewer chances to score... plus fewer turnovers. oh, and you need a QB that doesn't turn it over and receivers that don't drop balls. so.... our personnel, on offense, doesn't really match the game plan.[/quote:bf25a2323f] You're right... We're much too talented to be playing such a conservative brand of offense. Dwayne Bowe is as good as advertised and Tony Gonzalez is still the best in the business. Surprisingly, Samie Parker's caught everything thrown to him thus far. We need to play a spread offense and go vertical. Once we start threatening to go downfield consistently you won't see 8 in the box and Larry Johnson will start cutting defenses down to size.
  37. Sep 27, 2007 05:57pm by phism
whoops, i meant six. forgot that we don't, you know, play ourselves. i think reggie bush is overrated. the thing about griese was supposed to be slightly sarcastic. unless he can actually do something for them. grossman sucks. we'll see about the chiefs i guess... i don't really see them playing as a team, i don't like the coaching, and until the end of the last game, i didn't see any hope for the offense. again, we'll see if the line holds up enough to make those kinds of passes and open up the offense. it was good to see huard realizing, as one of the commentators put it, that sometimes a receiver like Bowe is open when he's not open. p.s. maybe it's the same nostalgia everyone has, but i'd like to see them activate priest and run some two-back plays and screens and whatnot from there.
  38. Sep 27, 2007 06:44pm by Whatsgood
I think when ya got a guy like Damon Huard you have to have a conservative type of offense. The guy is very immobile, doesn't have the arm to throw down field, and at times doesn't even make his reads. I agree with Phism, Reggie Bush is like Eric Metcalf used to be. Bush can't run between the tackles, he doesn't really get the paids down and take on defenders, all he really is a receiver playing RB, Aaron Stecker will be there premire back.

[quote:629e142b70="phism"]i think reggie bush is overrated.[/quote:629e142b70] I think that's the first time I've ever heard anyone say that. [quote:629e142b70]we'll see about the chiefs i guess... i don't really see them playing as a team, i don't like the coaching, and until the end of the last game, i didn't see any hope for the offense.[/quote:629e142b70] Remember though, this is exactly how things started last year. We were woeful through the first 2 games and Solari found some offensive intelligence as the season went on. Now that they know what they have in Bowe... Look for this team to go downfield...and often. [quote:629e142b70]again, we'll see if the line holds up enough to make those kinds of passes and open up the offense.[/quote:629e142b70] This offensive line is probably better suited for pass protection. I have no worries there. My concerns are how they'll run block. Which I think should be fine too once they aren't facing 8-man fronts anymore.

I think he's proven how efficient he can be in a vertical offense. He proved that over the Second Half of Sunday's game against Minnesota. i'll agree that he's not mobile, but he can throw down the field. if they were the same age, and i were an owner, i would no doubt rather have deuce mcallister on my team than reggie bush. he's just too small, and all that dante hall dancing doesn't do much when all you need to do is pound the hole (no innuendo intended).... teams will be able to do more with big running backs than fast or agile ones. unless it's barry sanders. and i don't think reggie bush is a barry sanders.

You don't build an offense around Bush, but to have a luxury player like that only expands what you can do offensively. He keeps defenses honest. That's why that team was so explosive last season. Defenses have to play straight up.

I think the AFC West is stronger than it looks at the moment. The Chiefs put themselves in a great spot by winning a divisional game on the road that they'd normally lose. They really don't have to win another AFCW game on the road. They can just run the table at home and be a 4-2 division team. Though I think they can win in Oakland too... They've got a shot to win the division title if they can win in Oakland. I expect them to beat every divisional opponent in Arrowhead. In the event that they do... They'll be 5-1 in the division.

It's official... [quote:a36d2e6ca5]DENVER -- Fox 31 News has learned that Denver Broncos running back Travis Henry, the team's leading rusher, has tested positive for marijuana use and could be subject to a one-year suspension. Henry, 28, previously served a four-game suspension from the National Football League for violating the leagues substance abuse policy in September 2005 as a member of the Tennessee Titans. Henry can appeal the latest violation. However, if the appeal is denied, he will begin serving a one-year suspension immediately. Henry can file for reinstatement 60 days prior to the end of the suspension. The Denver Broncos had no official comment, instead, deferring to the NFL. The Broncos signed Travis Henry in the off-season to a five-year, $22.5 million contract with $12 million in guarantees.[/quote:a36d2e6ca5] They have Jack & Squat at RB now and should make a big push for Ricky Williams.

They'd be underutilizing him to put him on a blocking detail. This guy can still contribute. He's got a nose for paydirt. He's still quick and could provide a much needed boost offensively.
  66. Oct 24, 2007 06:39am by phism
well, i don't mean solely. what i was thinking is that... if they play him as fullback some of the time, then you've got priest holmes and LJ in the backfield, and the D has to watch out for both of them... then you've got more looks, and it'd probably be even more unpredictable when you've got priest in FB and kolby smith back there too. plus priest and lj can both catch, we saw that a few times in this last game. maybe this is obvious. and i'm sure they're being careful with him for now.

You can get both of them in the backfield with a Pro Set. Or a Weak or Strong I formation. I doubt they're going to use kid gloves in their handling of Priest. If they think he can contribute... They will use him. I think he proved last week, when he earned that first down by bouncing a run to the outside, that he can help this football team. He's the perfect change of pace back. He's still quick...

[/quote:c364561a3e] True, but there's really no way to determine who the right QB is until you give that QB time to develop. [quote:c364561a3e="phism"] I assume they will, too. However, not commenting on that question is better than if he had just said he'll be back.[/quote:c364561a3e] The dreaded vote of confidence. I still think that decision will come after the last 3 games. If they lose out... King Carl could be in trouble. Sunday's season finale at Arrowhead will be paramount. It's gonna be cold out as well and I just think people are tired of whats going on out there.

i hope the chiefs lose the rest of their games, because it'll be better for the team to 1) get those draft picks, 2) hopefully fire the right people. i'll be cheering on the vikings, packers, steelers, and browns.

I'm afraid to lose out man I kinda want to avoid a top 10 pick heres why.. Guys taken in the top 10 make hella money and they are unproven. We've drafted in the middle the last 3 seasons and we've gotten DJ,Hali,Bowe. All three are nice players who didn't cost a boat load of money.

Top 10 picks are golden. And this year's First Round presents maybe 5 franchise players. If nothing else we can trade down and acquire another late First Rounder or something in the early to mid Second Round. The Chiefs could draft a guy like Jake Long or Malcolm Jenkins with their #1. If they lose out they could wind up with a pick as high as 4th overall. I'm all for it. Besides... All I really want to see is young players get game experience and develop so they'll be further along when 2008 begins.

We need starters this year. At probably 5 different spots. RG, RT, C, WR, CB...
