Ok - does this really make you want to read? I get the point and all... but damn. I saw this video a few weeks ago and now BET has made it available for mass consumption -- what do you guys think? [b:b77d70a6ed]Watch this - (there's an ad first and then the video "Read a Book" ---> and then let's discuss): http://www.bet.com/onblast/?chan=2&id=4554 [/b:b77d70a6ed] I personally am not offended or anything like that - I just think it's a good message being sent the "wrong" way. Is this really the best way to speak to the youth these days? Reach - Atilla - Sixer - Mac - NRG - Dr.T - Er'body - I'm callin' names for reactions because I don't know whether to be laughin' or to feel saddened by this - (haha??)

yeah i've seen this, and the 'Bid Em In' video. i think the 'Read A Book' joint is tasteless. having it sound like a knock off of a Lil Jon track doesn't help either. the 'Bid Em In' video is pretty brutal, as far as showing the reality of slavery and human trafficking. it kinda takes your breath away for a few seconds.

yeah I saw the "Bid em' in" joint which I thought was clever, tasteful, and educational from an empathetic point of view you know? Kinda' poetic - like I could see someone dong that at a slam competition.

I think the problem may be that they delude serious issues: education and land-ownership (lasting wealth), with bullshit issues (drink water, brush ya teeth, use deodorant). I don't mind the cheesy crunk cartoon delivery, I think it can be more precise as an over the top cartoon, I just mind that they're throwing in bullshit along with it. Saying that poor should be educated and own land is great, we all agree. Saying that they all smell bad, have shit hygene, and only drink 40s on the stoup is fucking idiotic. Why would you include that if you want your message to be taken seriously?

The fact that some parents don't know if their kids are caring for these things is why in my opinion its being lumped in with the weightier content. Also from a demographic stand point we know that all ages are swimming in the hiphopsounds, so to me it makes sense to speak to issues on multiple levels. [quote:49b692a26c]I don't mind the cheesy crunk cartoon delivery, I think it can be more precise as an over the top cartoon, I just mind that they're throwing in bullshit along with it. [/quote:49b692a26c] I think the majority of the folk coming here, had guidance from parents, were somewhat if not more than most exposed to these messages somewhere in their environment throughout their childhood, the challenge here is to NOT make assumptions about how others might be living in AMERICA. what may seem shallow or bullshit to some may not be so in parts of kansas city, or any other core urban area where folks are squeeking by by the skin of their teeth. These issues are not about race, their more about CLASSISM IN AMERICA. I have seen just as many if not more unkept white youngsters from poor families with hygiene issues that made me want to say something encouraging and inspiring in the hopes that I might also add a hint about those issues too. still there are more white people hence poor white people in america tho disproportionate (add a dash of systemic racial discrimination into the mix now) I could write a book about the formative issues that create low self awareness and asteem but this is not the time ( yall are saved by the bell on that one) But I will say this about that, at the very heart of me, is the knowledge that because of these systemic racial and class issues, wash yo ass has to must be said by someone concerned to anyone suffering from these issues at some point if you care. all of us know that PEOPLE WITH THESE ISSUES ARE LESS LIKELY TO GET JOBS, FAIR TREATMENT NO MATTER WHAT AGE, OUTCASTED ON A REGULAR BASES, and on from there. WE don't like funk, ugly teeth, disorder and have little other than a shallow tolerance for ignorance. SO ITS GOT TO BE SAID KINDLY AND AS OFTEN AS IT TAKES FOR THE MESSAGE TO BE RECEIVED and we shouldn't assume their parents , loveones or friends are telling them. Some times when you care you have to get involved beyond thinking it and move into doin and being caring. [quote:49b692a26c]Saying that poor should be educated and own land is great, we all agree. Honestly i think the people that made this video are frustrated with (negative) Hip Hop. I think they really want the youth to listen to more positive hip hop but they know it's impossible nowadays to get kids who are used to watching a bunch of nonsense to turn on something with a positive message. So what they did is they made an overly exaggerated version of a wack video and replaced the bad aspects with good messages.... (ie. The part where chick is bouncing her booty up and down with the word "book" on it....that one little scene pretty much sums up the entire video) if that made any sense.... hey first time I seen it I almost died laughin'

I have been known to say ignorant off handed shit before, and hygenic living isn't exactly something that I ever consider. I'll own up to my own classist ignorance on this one. I know folks that struggle probably don't need me running my mouth about what is or isn't "talking down" to them. Note: I haven't showered since yesterday morning. Will I shower when I get home from work or just play records? We'll see...

I think this vid is funny. Considering the context of what they are making a parody of, I think it was done in good taste (edited version that is). If they can use the same delivery as the music that they are dissing, but be more "outrageous" than the original source material, they are proving their point. when the message is put forth like this...its "bull****" or "missing the point"...but when its presented more straightforwardly, its all of a sudden "preachy". There seems to be no middle ground for that sort of thing. Its strange, but there's less and less acceptable ways to present positive messages in mainstream American (especially black) society, when negative messages are not only more numerous, but condoned (for the most part.)

This shit is fucking hilarious. And word to Necia, bad hygiene isn't really a small issue these days. Man, some of my cousins have like 3 teeth left because they never developed the simple habit of BRUSHING THEIR GOD DAMNED TEETH. I'm not mad at this song. It's funny as hell though. "Your body needs water, so drink that shit."

It is funny, but probably a useless attempt at education. If they had an incentive behind the message this might actually make sense. I think this video is going to get about as much accomplished as walking up to someone on the street and yelling "dance". I didn't see these so called education advocates dropping any titles of real material to read during lets say... black history month.

jd, go to youtube, search for Read a Book and there will be several versions by the poet who created this rhyme. one of those they use a slide method to show books and portraits of black leaders I tried to embed them in this thread but to no avail. worth checking out. nrg
