good day to you all. i just want to take a moment and inform you all as to where we are at with sundays at the peanut... midnight closings are not looking as though they are going to change. in order to qualify for a 3:00 license we have to be able to provide a great deal more parking capacity and the city will not allow us to claim the private lot next to it even though it's legal to park there on weekends and evenings. this makes very little sense to me as it is in a downtown environment where parking is almost always an issue. people often times have to walk a good distance to get where they're headed in any city. but alas, i have no say in this matter. now, in light of the earlier closings they are now making MUCH less money at the bar than they are accustomed to and this is resulting in us (the dj's) experiencing a sizeable decrease in pay. (at least temporarily) i know this isn't your problem but ultimately we can't afford to sustain the event (or even consider bringing through the touring acts that we have been planninig on) with the pay reduction in effect. the lack of liqour revenue at the nut is also forcing them to close the upstairs. the upstairs is cashed out separetely and it is usually barely breaking even ever since midnight closings kicked in. they can't afford to staff it and cover overhead costs unless we can solve this. basically there are 3 possible solutions to this from my perspective. a.) we can raise the cover charge to 4 or 5 (i don't want to do this, especially considering that we are now closing earlier. it just wouldn't be fair to you) b.) people can start coming out earlier. as i've said several times before, we start around 8:00PM. i know it's a little early, but if we could start filling the room at closer to 8:30 or 9:00 instead of 10:30 or 11:00 it would not only allow those in attendance to have a longer more fullfillng night of debauchery, but it would also easily solve our $$ problems. I WOULD LOVE IT SOME OF YOU WOULD START COMING EARLIER. we normally play more chill soul and downtempo stuff earlier and at lower volumes. so please... come out and hang, eat, drink and be merry with us a little earlier. it'll be like summer cook-outs every sunday. and 8 isn't that early for a sunday is it? c.) we could start having after-parties that run until 3 or 4 AM. most likely at Buzzard Beach, as they've extended the offer. in this situation we would have one system being set up there at around 11:30 and would be set up and running by midnight so people can jet back to westport to finish off the night at everyonee's favorit shit-hole. while i would like to start doing after-parties, i'm skeptical about whether we can draw people to another spot after closing. especially in westport, so if anyone has any ideas or thoughts on this topic i'd be eager to hear from you. alternative venue suggestions are also welcome. anyway, as is said earlier, i know none of this is really your problem, but lots of people have been asking me what's going on with HH&HW, and this is what it is. if things don't change, it won't go away entirely, but it will be back to one floor, 2 dj's and very very rarely would there be guests. i don't want it to end up that way. please help us make this work. we can't do it alone! thank you all.

weigh in with your opinion people... this is very real and we need your input now. - mb

First off that parking lot deal is stupid. Second - I'd support the after party till 3 - but not on a Sunday, which is when hiphop and hot wings is. I don't drink - but I can bring people who do from now on. Also - I'll try and be there early. I'm not the most avid visitor, but when I do go I am guilty of showing up at 10/10:30. Lastly, since I don't go that much - the raise up to $5 wouldn't hit me hard. Plus I'd see that as supporting a premiere hiphop event in KC. I know you said it's not fair - but if you need that kind of support - I don't think a $3 price hike would damage anyone's livelihood. I think they'd understood if an announcement were made or sun'n - otherwise you got cats that are like "5 dollars!! They must think they doin' it big or sun'n!! I'm not comin' here anymore" - over 5 dollars?!?!? So yeah, thanks for puttin' it out there.

HH&HW is dope. And, while it sucks that it's maybe downsizing, is that entirely a bad thing? Special guests can be special and all, but really I just want to hear good hiphop spun and see some local cats get down every once in a while. Shit, sometimes the special guests will make me b-line for the door, but that's just me. I think starting earlier is good. A big reason I don't come more is work on Monday mornings. The early close doesn't affect me too negatively. It's the opposite I guess. I wish more events started earlier. You're right not to raise the cost to $5. It would backfire, I swear. I think the thing to do is make it the best that it can be as is, and promote earlier attendance, which will hopefully boost food sales and somehow balance out whatever losses. Really, though, local cats shouldn't be too picky about how much they get to appear. I'm not talking about the dj's. They're putting in hours. But for rappers that show up, some free beer and twenty to forty bucks should suffice. This isn't a "show", it's an underground night, perfect for trying out new material or rocking for local homies. Westport as an after-party is a bad idea. But I don't really care at all for Westport. To me it's sort of anti-whatever the fuck HH&HW might stand for in my mind. I don't know. These are my 2 cents I guess. In two weeks I'll be living a block away, so I'll be down more often.

Personally, I'm skeptical. An hour and a half of time has suddenly decreased their revenue that much? Really? Then how can they even stand to open their doors on, like, a Tuesday for their regular business? How can HH&HW not be the downtown Peanut's bread and butter regardless of an hour and a half difference? I feel like I see people spending all kinds of money there every week. But skepticism aside, I think the Peanut should continue to fuss with the city over getting a 3am license. Til then, I'm willing to show up earlier, because I would rather have a masectomy performed with rusty scissors than hang out at Buzzard Beeyatch. Then again...Buzzard wants to host HH&HW? What kind of deals can they offer us?

Ummmm... technically I thought KC's bar laws allowed all ages for bar & grill combos. Maybe all ages there then the grown folks move to the buzzard? Seems a lot more fair and lucrative at a light hour like midnight.

I know, I know... I'm no there so I don't know shit about KC right? Sorry for the 3 consistent replies. This night is a KC staple. It needs to remain weather it's passed onto someone else and the pioneers go elsewhere or not. Don't just forfeit the night due to a time restraint. The worse thing that could happen is for it to remain a place for hiphop in a city that doesn't have that much exposure to real hiphop. Here's my personal thoughts... Instead of investing in a home for hiphop why not take it to the next level and make the newly developed KC a home for hiphop? As of now I guarantee the developers in downtown aren't trying to fuck with hiphop concerning the way the crime rate is. Why not invest in a Businessman, a figurehead to translate your dope thoughts of oneness into a business plan that can be understood and excepted by these developers? Someone who can approach them with confidence and understanding of what they are trying to create and what we're (I will be back) trying to preserve. Just a realistic thought.

its a great idea JD. kc hiphop still needs a place to spread (HOME) out in tho got any suggestions for who we might approach to articulate our positions and business plan? and yes I know your butt is coming back someday. oh yeah, pretty much what Lucid said with an addendum. All ages at $5 21er's at 2. find an after party place anywhere but westport please. but hey if you must go there get paid to bring them money unbelievable what hiphop goes through in kc nrg

Well, what do you do when hiring anyone? Interview them. This may sound like an abstract idea but if you're going to employ someone interview them like any business would. Not just people in the hiphop scene. You could post a "want ad" at local colleges in business and marketing classrooms, etc. College kids always need an extra income and are attaining the knowledge that these developers speak.

i say people should come earlier.. close at midnight... that's cool with me.. i gotta be at work monday morning.. i don't buy it that they are "loosing" money on the sundays upstairs.. but oh well...who's really to say. i'd like to see HH&HW stay strong even if it goes back to just the downstairs and is way more chill

[/quote:b6c33805c9] JD, like i said in my earlier post, it will not go away entirely. and no one is going to forfeit a thing. we're going to work through it one way or another. it's not going to die on my watch. nadia, we would never take the whole night to buzzard. i can promise you that much. it would be strictly post peanut hours. i can honestly say i've had some great times there on the late late tip. i don't really want to do this but i'd like to extend our hours somehow. the upstairs at korruption is another alternative. any other late-night spots appeal to you? Believe it or not, on average, 70% of liquor revenue on sundays was pouring in between 12:00 and last call. Now, with midnight closings, percentage wise it is still about the same deal between 11:00 and 12:00 but the overall volume is down radically. essentially there are less people present for a shorter duration of time. the peanut is not losing it's shirt by any means, but i can see why they may not be able to be quite as generous with us under these circumstances. I also thank you for touching on it being "downtown's bread & butter." While i think that may be a mild overstatement, i do think the city recognizes that it's a successful night, and may be the very reason they are giving us such a hard time over closing earlier. aside from the city's undying bias against all things urban, i have good reason to believe that city planners and developers are intentionally trying to stifle activity in the downtown and westport areas in an effort to draw businesses and patrons to the fledgling "entertainment district" i am going to shoot for the all-ages approach (or at least 18+) and charge more for the youngin's since they won't be drinking. we shall see where this goes. thanks to lucid and necia for pushing me that direction. it's the most sensible possibility by far. i intend to be very open and forthcoming with all new info and developments as we proceed, and i welcome any and all feedback and suggestions. thank you all very much. i love you almost as much as i hate briefs.

Thank you for keeping us all in the loop, BB. I think Korruption is a perfect after-Peanut spot, actually. The main reason I poo-poo'ed Buzzard Beach (besides my personal feelings on the place) was that i don't like the idea of a bunch of us driving across town all tipsy down heavily-policed roads to meet up again. But Korruption is a straight shot down 12th to the Bottoms, which seems easy-breezy. JD, come on, tell me some more about Seattle or Portland or wherever it is you are. Superbowl? Bet on the Donks!
  14. Jun 22, 2007 08:51pm by Lucidialect
Korruption's upstairs is a dope little spot. I'm wondering how long that thing's going to keep going, but for now, why not? And the revenue thing makes sense. Getting drinks at the bar always got most difficult between 12 and 1:30. People's wallets definitely loosen up after a few drinks, and the night seems to always be just kickin off about midnight. Oh well. Thanks for keeping this going, Beat Broker. Let us know what happens.

what about moving hh&hw to the brick. I've brought this up a couple times before. They have a stage. The performers wouldn't be rapping to a sitting audience.

demencha, i've definitely thought about the brick. i like the spot alot. i don't think we'll be moving the event there though as it really is more of a performance venue and i don't want people to feel detached from the dj's and performers. i would really like to get another regular night popping off down there though. i'll explore that a little more this week. thank you mang.

Maybe what keeps people coming back to hh&hw is the laid back atmosphere, with all the tables and chairs and everything. As a side note, what makes buzzard beach any less creepy than korruption?
