See, I thought these images were combating creationism, until I looked at the link. Strange. I would be interested in visiting this museum, though.

i heard about it a while ago, but i was wondering what you could actually put in such a museum, since you're not going to have any ACTUAL artifacts.

yeah it was on NPR last month.
Do you know how many times I got in trouble at youth group for asking about dinosaurs and how adam and eves kid had kids.
Or why all the jesus graven images are white dudes.
not jewish.
why does jesus have blonde hair?
This is the first year in my life I am having a hard time, believing in this creationism crap. it took over 30 years
Noah got dinos on an ark? big teeth for veggies?
CARBON DATING.....this is where i always lost the arguement with my friends
Religion was created to control the mind of the masses.
its funny how a religion that was "created" for the poor, caters to the rich. All three of my "pastors" had Cadillacs.
and i really remember them taken my mommas food stamps for tithes.
I really hate the stares, looks, and rebuke that i get from so-called compasionate lovers of god.
especially when they see me with my mixed son.
Fred Phelps is in hell right now sucking off tinky winky.
i love the christ man, but cant stand them Christians.
they already have you.
Buddah Bless You!
every religion, except Christianity and Islam accept all other religions and beliefs. Mormon/ latter day saints. dont count..... not a religion. its a made up cult.
Im glad I have friends that steered me right.
If you believe in this museum you probably don't believe in global warming or the horrible horrible emissions that we are putting out in our country.
true? yes!
die!
not true? cool.
PEACE!
open your eyes.....I seen the light so should you. If you need sources of info....I gots em.
Trust me my step-dad...ex-pastor
my moms...still currently an Evangelist. Staying married to an abusive man because the "Church" says that she should. and god wont approve if they divorce.
fuck that
p.s. my opinions and expeirences.....................remember this I dont give a what!

i'm thinking about putting together a little booklet for the kids i work with full of general non-fiction... history of different music styles, black panthers, native americans, etc.... alternative education type shit... and one of the things on the to-do list for that is a timeline of various religious events alongside each other, as well as a historical/science timeline to compare them to.
[img:68bc6018c4]http://farm1.static.flickr.com/229/526992467_5344a63a40.jpg[/img:68bc6018c4]
^like that only deeper... by the way, is it just me or is that diagram itself kind of working against its own cause?
one of the most interesting things to me is that humans have been around for about 150,000 years... 500,000 if you count pre-human species, but the judeochristian god has only been thought of/created/believed in/mentioned for about 4000 (abram/abraham). i don't know how other religions compare, but there's going to be a long ass line before any of the modern ones even get on the board.

do you know how much imbreeding would have had to take place in order for adam and eve to have reproduced to become this entire billion person civilization?
the bible never once touches on the absolute rampant incest that would have had to go down in order for it to be true.
nor do they discuss technology, why slavery is for some reason justified in certain biblical books, the fact that the earth is round, etc.

No, they were ignorant, there is an immense difference.
And they were in positions of power, which corrupts the best of us.
And they had agendas, just like every single one of us have.
But don't simply degrade a book that has brought more joy and hope to humans than any other book on the face and history of earth simply because you believe the people that put the thing together had the same resources and knowledge that you possess and could not grasp the ideals which you share.
Then you start to sound Baptist, and of course, that's where it all falls down.

adam had a wife before eve. they met "evil" people in nod when they left eden. so, while there is an explanation for that in ancient text... i'm not sure it's one that anyone wants to hear or really makes much sense in itself.
look at that last picture from the first post in this thread... it's got a weird explanation of how incest isn't bad if you get married before you do it. but it fails to mention the more obvious explanation, that adam and eve and their children weren't the only people out there.
[quote:3adf2b7c3b]nor do they discuss technology, why slavery is for some reason justified in certain biblical books, the fact that the earth is round, etc.[/quote:3adf2b7c3b]
again, they were only human. real prophets would have had more specific advice.
[quote:3adf2b7c3b]And they were in positions of power, which corrupts the best of us.
And they had agendas, just like every single one of us have.[/quote:3adf2b7c3b]
i think more than that, you have to look at the fact that most of the books of the bible were written decades, perhaps centuries after the events actually took place (depending on which book) and chances are the stories got twisted... and even more likely, the stories weren't twisted from things that actually happened, but modified versions of the beliefs of previous (probably mesopotamian) religions. keep in mind that the hebrew god was just a little-known tribal god until they started getting really good at killing everyone around them and converting them. if that sounds familiar, it's because that's how almost every religion has spread its influence.
[quote:3adf2b7c3b]But don't simply degrade a book that has brought more joy and hope to humans than any other book on the face and history of earth simply because you believe the people that put the thing together had the same resources and knowledge that you possess and could not grasp the ideals which you share.

i think i just choose to degrade any book. i don't like filling my brain with other people's thoughts when i can have my own at a greater speed.

i guess. but if you don't see the sad hilarity of this museum thing, i don't know what to tell you. besides maybe move to kansas if you plan on raising your kids in the public school system.
i'm not gonna get all superduperhyphy and mad about it or anything. i don't get mad at little kids for believing in santa clause, or teenagers for believing they can all be famous billionnaires.
clashing worldviews can just be frustrating, and a strain on interacting with people. and i guess i see it as depressing that people waste so much thought, and choose who they vote for and whatnot based on something that, to a person who doesn't believe, can only view as delusional. if you had never heard of god, what would you think of people who thought there was an invisible man in the sky running shit? and that people don't actually die, they just get their new single played on this week's edition of pump it or dump it with DJ Saint Peter to find out if they will spend eternity in top 40 cloud rotation or the fires of the Gehenna dollar bin... you'd probably think you just stepped out of the wayback machine and that someone was about to sell you snake oil or try you as a witch. this isn't meant to be pejorative, i'm just explaining the way all of this looks from the perspective of a nonbeliever.

- Jun 11, 2007 02:18am by phism
there's a difference between knocking a religion and knocking nonsense. in fact, i think religion is completely different from race in more ways than i want to talk about. not to mention that religion has historically motivated plenty of racist activity, moreso than atheism as far as i can tell. but really, this isn't even a valid thing to argue about.
this whole topic doesn't even have to do with hating on christianity as much as it is trying to dispel the idea these creationists are trying to present: that science is more flawed than religion in its explanation of anything. it's simply not true.

Honestly, if God became human and died so that I could go to Heaven then I don't give a rat's ass if he was purple, burgundy, or freaking turquoise!
Ace if your not Christian why do you refer to something as a graven image? And finally Phism, why do you care if people believe in God, I fail to see how it's hurting you. And for Christs' sake (literally) people need to quit referring to Bush as a Christian, he's a false prophet "What you do unto the least of my brothers you do unto me" So Bush is screwing Jesus out of his money.

Yes, because this is the basic foundation for racism. Jesus is "Pure", therefore I am he, I am White so I am the Most Pure.
Plus its al little silly to be taught all of your life that Jesus looks this way, when he doesnt. Its the reason I began to question my youth Pastors.
"Arent most middle eastren people brown, and have dark hair?" I got in trouble for these questions as a child. they have you. watch jesus camp. i told you i lived it.
[quote:ef4fe08c2d]Ace if your not Christian why do you refer to something as a graven image?
I never said that, but.[/quote:ef4fe08c2d]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graven_Image
The word idolatry comes (by haplology) from the Greek word eidololatria, a compound of eidolon, "image" or "figure", and latreia, "worship". Although the Greek appears to be a loan translation of the Hebrew phrase avodat elilim, which is attested in rabbinic literature (e.g., bChul., 13b, Bar.), the Greek term itself is not found in the Septuagint, Philo, Josephus, or in other Hellenistic Jewish writings. It is also not found in Greek pagan literature. In the New Testament, the Greek word is found only in the letters of Paul, 1 Peter, 1 John, and Revelation, where it has a derogatory meaning. Hebrew terms for idolatory include avodah zarah (foreign worship) and avodat kochavim umazalot (worship of planets and constellations).[/color:ef4fe08c2d]
So looking at a picture of Jesus, when it is 1. an image and 2. it is a false image, is a sin, and contradicts the whole theory of worship, including who and how.
[quote:ef4fe08c2d]Phism, why do you care if people believe in God, I fail to see how it's hurting you. hey, i'm just spreading the bad news.
not to mention that there are plenty of ways in which specific people's faith, which is sometimes christian faith, can directly impose hardship, difficulty, social rejection, et cetera upon me and those i care about. the president, my boss, family, you, etc. i'm not saying "fuck you, christians," i'm just saying god's not real. you can take that or leave it, but that's your choice. i can still say it.
besides, this thread isn't about christians. it's about a damned "CREATIONIST MUSEUM".... whether you're christian or not, that's unfathomably moronic.
in fact, as a christian, i would think you'd be more opposed to it than i am. especially since plenty of the things they are displaying do not fit in with what the bible says. i know more about the bible than most christians, and that's not supposed to sound arrogant, but to let you know i'm not ignorant of the tenets of the faith and its larger denominations. religion is ultra-interesting to me. i'd also be concerned about the museum if i was religious, but not christian, because they should really call themselves a christian creationist museum anyway... since there's plenty of stories of creation that pre-date and post-date christianity's stories. but, i know there's an agenda there and it's probably run by a church.
[quote:90fa18e527="Whatsgood"]Let me guess Jesus wasn't real? Everyone from the Jews to the Muslims all acknowledge Jesus did in exist so I'm convinced there really is a Jesus.[/quote:90fa18e527]
uhhhh..... have you ever known anyone who wasn't white or black? anyone at all? well, in case you hadn't, i'll just tell you that jesus was one of those. there are people who are not black who could be described as having "skin of bronze and hair of wool"... like me, for example. or, you know, he could have been an actual bronzed sheep, perhaps... which might be similar to a golden calf, in a way. i don't know what i'm talking about now.

I don't wanna argue but I just gotta say a couple things, Ace I OWN Jesus Camp as well as Jesus Land (a book that is similar) and I love them both, they show me how people can take what I believe (actually know, but that word just starts more arguments so I try to refrain from using it) and twist it into something it was never meant to be. but like I said I don't care about what color he was, doesn't make me feel any more or less.
As for the topic of the thread phism, I know what it's about I was reffering to the things said afterward. I respect all of you guys opinions I just don't like how you refer to Christians as a total, that is the same as racism. Remember sometimes the difference between truth and racism is just the use of the word all instead of a more honest some or most.

lol, well dog, I'll never stop believing but I feel you.
If it makes you feel any better Me and my dad hated Bush before he even got voted in.
I AM conservative, but I am not a republican. I am a democrat, but I am not a liberal. I wish there was a conservative democrat but theres not, so I have to go with Democratic, cuz I mean I feel really strongly about all the faith-based stuff, but we're voting for a POLITICAL leader not a religious one. As for Carbon-Dating it's been proven that it is not anywhere near accurate, pieces of wood from boats in the 1800's were carbon dated and came back as thousands of years old.
And as for the racism thing, it has nothing to do with whether I can stop or not, if some ignorant fuck starts belitlling you because of your race would you change your race just because you could?! Fuck that, so it has nothing to do with whether I can stop being Christian or not. And also, I wasn't pointing out the similarity between it and racism because I was offended, it's because most of America is easily offended, honestly there's barely anything out there that offends me. My favorite comedian is George Carlin, and we know how he feels about Christianity.
edit: Oh and speaking of the whole conservative democrat thing, I hate Dick Cheney ... a fucking liberal republican, I remember hoping that if someone did finally shoot Bush they'd make sure to get him too. But I didn't say that ...
gotta go, FBI is knocking at the door -_-'

i'm not saying "fuck you, christians," i'm just saying god's not real. you can take that or leave it, but that's your choice. i can still say it.

Do you realize that you acknowledge something that DOESN'T EXIST far too much to well...not believe in it?
Honestly, if God truly doesn't exist why do you take such pleasure in screaming on folks who believe he does?
Why do you care?
I get the feeling that you're not an atheist in truth, but rather an antagonist to religiosity. Which is something altogether different.
Objections against ANYTHING that are rooted in stereotypes don't amount to much. That's hustle-knocking and it's unnecessary.
Don't believe in God? Fine...
But to poke fun at people who do is silly.
It really is.
You can't demonize all of Christianity because you saw "Jesus Camp".
For real ya'll... Ya'll need to cut that out...

alright, antitheist then. i don't plan to tell my kids about the tooth fairy, boogieman, santa claus, upward economic mobility, the easter bunny, satan, or other such myths... i'm a pretty straightforward dude.
and you won't likely find me screaming ever in life. i feel like i'm being pretty civil. i don't use caps or exclamation points... if the discussion is being opened, i'm gonna tell you my thoughts and what i think is real just as other people do the same. nobody says anything when people talk openly about god and the power of their faith, but for some reason it's automatically antagonizing to say you think it's all in people's heads. people also seem to have a problem with someone saying their opinion without supplementing it with "i think" or "in my opinion"... it's gonna be my opinion, everything anyone says is their opinion... why try to soften the blow...
i care because it's an interesting topic to me, firstly. if something is on the history or discovery channels about religion, i'll usually stop on it. no matter what religion or what it's talking about, it catches my attention and i enjoy learning about it. second, it's bizarre to me the idea of believing in things that are very likely to be completely fabricated by various cultures and modified over thousands of years. you could really say the same thing about most cultural practices, but religion is especially potent because of its ability to severely affect people's ideas of right and wrong beyond just influencing values, customs, and ideas like most aspects of culture do.
you can't tell me it's not an intriguing discussion. i'm not the type to get heated, so don't take it that way. if i start to try to be humorous or something, anyway.

i didn't see jesus camp... although i hear it took place in lee's summit or something which makes me want to see it. my objections are not rooted in stereotypes, though. they're rooted in history and science.... and a little bit in current events and political science but that gets into the grey area of associating faith to the actions of its constituents...
believe me, i'm not poking fun. i wouldn't diss somebody about that shit, but i'd talk about it. for example, the kids i work with are typically super christian... i don't tell them they're wrong, but i'll tell them i don't believe in god and why... and chances are when my superiors find out about it i'll still get in trouble, even though i wouldn't be reprimanded for the opposite (which by coincidence would be a more illegal action).
1Sh1Da: if you're going to be a conservative democrat you've got plenty of company in the democratic party. that's what they are... moderates.
p.s. personal history with christianity in particular.... i was a christian when i was in middle school.... i still think my catholic upbringing affected a lot of my development (especially that good old fashioned guilt complex)... the more i learned about the religion, and the more i read the actual bible, the more i started to dislike other christians for not following it, and not knowing what it actually said... and from reading it more than most people, i noticed the incongruencies, and the things in the bible that are actually kind of fucked up (about killing your own kids for being disobedient, about smashing the babies of your enemies on rocks when you invade their towns, about what you can and can't eat, about killing the first born boys in all of egypt for the actions of their pharaoh, about eating babies... stuff like this)... and then the more i realized that my scientific beliefs were stronger because of evidence, and that they didn't match the biblical stuff... and learning baout how the books of the bible were written... learning lots of things.. the jig was pretty much up. god didn't create any dinosaurs.

I take from this that God is every bit as mythological as the aforementioned entities... Point taken.
You're entitled and in fact obligated to instill whatever values, in your children, you hold dear to heart.
[quote:ed66d266ed]nobody says anything when people talk openly about god and the power of their faith[/quote:ed66d266ed]
Actually you have. In this very forum.
And the searchable archives can substantiate my claim.
[quote:ed66d266ed]for some reason it's automatically antagonizing to say you think it's all in people's heads.[/quote:ed66d266ed]
You don't think reconciling an application of faith as illogical is antagonistic?
Come on...
[quote:ed66d266ed]i care because it's an interesting topic to me, firstly.[/quote:ed66d266ed]
The investment of your time makes that plain to see.

Sure it is... So long as you extend the same amount of respect for spiritual views that differ from your own.
[quote:ed66d266ed]but that gets into the grey area of associating faith to the actions of its constituents...[/quote:ed66d266ed]
Exactly. That's where you'll lose me each time because that involves sweeping generalizations which are only informed by biases and prejudices. And that, sir, does neither of us any good.

i try to shy away from saying that [insert religion here], broadly-defined, have started however many wars, destroyed cultures, etc. until someone asks "how does someone else's faith affect you?"... which is an issue of power.
i don't think it's antagonistic or disrespectful to tell someone they're wrong or being irrational. especially if you've got considerable justification. they can just tell you you're wrong back. you can say "i disagree" and no one will get mad and you're saying the same thing. but i think i'm just not good with sensitivities and politeness.
