Basically I'm taking a month or longer hiatus from listening to hiphop...I'm gonna listen to some Jimi, Doors, Janis Joplin, Stones...classic rock joints for the next period of time.
The only hiphop I will be listening to is my own as I continue to record....I feel like the music out there has been influencing me negatively and cluttering my brain, I need some fresh perspective and I hope this does it for me. I've always felt rock's energy, but never got into the music so much, so most of this stuff will be experienced with fresh ears. I will, however, cop that new Pharoahe only cuz I've been waiting 7 years for it!
I wanna dig a little deeper within myself and elevate my skills to the maximum. Anyone else ever tried anything like this?

I feel you on that, some of my homies are into Jeezy and all that bullshit, and I swear after hanging with them for a while, I just can't spit the same. And msot def on that Desire album, just listening to the Awakening mixtape had me feeling rejuvinated.

My problem is that I only like 4 or 5 rap albums anymore.
It's not even being one of those elitist guys who hates all rap. I just feel a lot of other types of music speak to me better.
I don't find much outdoes my favorite 10 or so rap albums that I STILL have in rotation. Been listening to The Blueprint lately. Man.

I tend to seek out rock with a beat, it's an excellent influence, that combination of energy and rhythm sets me on my way. Nine Inch Nails is a good farm of electronic ideas and if you listen closely to Bjork, you can find good stuff.
I try to listen to as little hip-hop as possible anymore, helps me remain unique.

You should peep the new Linkin Park, they made Mr. Hahn a more noticable part of the music so the beats are really sick. And it's mainly rock nopw not so much rap-rock, it's more like rock over a pseudo-hip-hop beat. Amazing.

I've been listening to "Be" a lot lately.
And Oddisee's "Foot In The Door".
But I find myself listening to the same couple Rap albums over and over again too...

Good music is good music she said.
so I listen to lots of it from all genres. this way whether I listen to local or national or world, I am developing my ears so they hear stuff, innovation, continuity, continuation, artistry, skillful execution, course I was raised by a musician, and birthed a musician/artist/teacher so how else would I approach artistry.
love of music is a lifelong pursuit my opinion, its the history of the world in sound and words what could be grander.
check coltrane and johnny hartman or tuck and patty or traditional hawiaian chants or celtic music or african tribal music hell just throw the doors and windows of you mind open and receive all this magical input
oh and sit in the dark more and play it loud enough when you listen there's less distractions that way
sometimes my ritual to prepare to listen is to give my ears a good washing and qtiping. this way they know they are in for a real treat.
ahhhhhhh

yeah, it's real good to take breaks....I usually listen to some soul or rock. I've had The Decemberists Cutouts and Castaways on repeat for a while...and Kev Browns beat tape and Steve Spacek's "Dollar"...

For me, Im always making music. So I cant imagine only listening to Hip Hop. One thing I do almost every Sunday is listen to full albums that Im thinking about chopping. I write down the songs and the time when I want to sample the song.
I got Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, and Otis Redding in a rotation. I also like listening to Sade or Dinah Washinton. As well as some Rolling Stones, Tina and/or Ike Turner and Queens of the Stone Age (music for the deaf, only) It helps to own a lot of diverse music.
Get on the internet a try to find out your favorite artist's, favorite music. thats how I found out about Roots Manuva and Lady Soveriegn about Three years ago. From a Link from MF DOOM site.
Look up these:
