    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Joe Miller April 23, 2007 (816) 550-1782 Kansas Citians invited to celebrate “a city that works” with new mayor and city council Privately funded Inauguration Party May 4 at Union Station Following their official induction into office, Kansas City’s new Mayor and City Council will join their fellow citizens for an “unceremonious” evening of diverse music and dancing at Union Station from 7 to 11:30 p.m. on Friday, May 4. The 2007 Inauguration Celebration at the Station is free to the public, but commemorative wristbands will be required for admittance. The free wristbands will be available beginning April 28 at area community centers (see list below), and must be obtained in advance of the May 4 celebration. Due to space restrictions, wristbands will not be available at the door at Union Station the night of the event. The informal celebration will include live music, dancing, light appetizers and brief introductions of new Mayor Mark Funkhouser and members of the City Council: Deb Hermann, 1st District At-Large; Bill Skaggs, 1st District In-District; Ed Ford, 2nd District At-Large; Russ Johnson, 2nd District In-District; Melba Curls, 3rd District At-Large; Sharon Sanders Brooks, 3rd District In-District; Beth Gottstein, 4th District At-Large; Jan Marcason, 4th District In-District; Cindy Circo, 5th District At-Large; Terry Riley, 5th District In-District; Cathy Jolly, 6th District At-Large; and John Sharp, 6th District In-District. Introductions are scheduled to begin at 8:15 p.m. Attire options are open – formal or business casual. Entertainment will include: 4 Fried Chickens and a Coke; the dance troupe El Grupo; the Bobby Bryant Trio, featuring Everette Devan and Michael Warren; the H.K. Chinese Folk Dance Group; African Drums; Royal Priesthood; and the Slick Ballinger Band. Mayor-elect Funkhouser said he wanted a celebration that was “unstuffy and fun, just like the people of this wonderful, hard-working city.” Funkhouser has committed himself to using none of the public money normally allotted for inaugural celebrations for the May 4 celebration. Rather, civic and business groups have contributed to a newly formed “City That Works Committee” to cover the costs of the celebration. The commemorative wristbands that will serve as free tickets to the May 4 celebration will be available at the following community centers on a first come, first served basis beginning Saturday, April 28. Citizens must be 18 years or older to attend.
