Posted on Thu, Apr. 19, 2007 Justice Dept. seeks closure of Guantánamo cases By Associated Press WASHINGTON -- The Justice Department on Thursday asked the U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia to throw out all the cases filed by Guantánamo Bay detainees. The move follows a federal appeals court ruling two months ago that the detainees cannot use the U.S. court system to challenge their indefinite imprisonment. This month, the Supreme Court declined for now to consider the issue. Some of the roughly 385 prisoners have been held at the U.S. Navy base in Cuba for more than five years. None has yet had a hearing in a civilian court challenging his detention, although two earlier Supreme Court rulings extended legal protection to them. The same appeals court that ruled in February against the detainees will now review the work of military panels that have found each of the detainees to be an enemy combatant. The limited review in the appeals court will assess whether military panels followed proper procedures. In a statement, the Justice Department said the U.S. military will permit for an unspecified amount of time previously scheduled visits between lawyers and the detainees they are representing. From now on, priority will be given to lawyers for detainees who are pursuing the reviews of military panel procedures in the appeals court. http://www.miamiherald.com/416/story/80089.html
