Getting ready to go to HH&HW, I called one of my homies who told me he was thinking of moving to San Francisco. trying to hang out before he burns out.
He is feeling like 29 is old and wants to do something with his life.
I tell him to go for it and give him my blessings.
If San Fran dont work I dont know he says...........
Then he tells me that he has done everything but sign papers to join the ARMY. He was telling me all these scores he got, and how they were telling him that he could pick a job, and how he would be assigned.
All of his friends and family are trying to tell him not to go. We keep telling him horror stories that weve heard and nothing gets through. This is one of those good guys. You know the kind wehere everybodies like, "He was such a great guy, and so young." That is some sh*t I do not want to repeat.
Does anybody have any advice. I would like it if someone knew a someone already enlied to. I mean enlisted.

[size=18:166f438baf]Here's some advice. HELLO! There's a fucking unjust war going on that's taking lives daily! You will go to Iraq. You will kill innocent people. You will be given a very vague course on combat before they just throw your ass in! [/size:166f438baf] Hasn't he watched the CNN and 60 minutes stories about entire units of new recruits being untrained due to lack of funding in obviously needed areas? My brother-in-law is there and coming back in June once his year is served. That's IF they don't extend his mission. Dude, no, not the Army. My entire family is military besides me and they all told me if I wanted to join to stay away from the Army and Marines. The only way to get in where you want is to have at least two years (associates degree) of college in the field you're trying to enter. I almost joined the Air Force as a teenager and my sister demanded the college part. Here's a run down of how thier military life started.
Military: Yeah, choose three places and we'll station you at one of them.
Sister & Husband: Alaska, Albuquerque or Montana. (they're the outdoorsy type)
Military: How about Omaha Nebraska! 😀
Sister & Husband: 😥

Coming from a former Marine... I think your boy, or anyone else with a decent head on their shoulders, will be better suited in the Marines.
The "army of one" bullish basically means you are on your own after you sign the papers. I heard mad horror stories about army bases and the lack of respect received while serving. I met several army cats that they looked like they got barely anything from serving, but the GI Bill. A good friend of mine is a dependent to an army cat and she completely hates it right now because of the conditions they live in, IN THE STATES! The marines live completely different.
I was jammed up at 1st from the strict discipline from the Marines, but I have come to FULLY respect it because of what I was taught. Plus the respect, dope uniforms, dope resume, GI Bill, and other perks help too.
As far as Iraq, it's a b*tch. I couldn't see enlisting now, cause as JD said, it's a pretty wack situation right now. If he really has the itch to go pull a trigger and is between a rock and a hard place in his life.. hell sometimes the military is the only escape.

I was considering moving to San Fran when I hit the ground running... there or ATL...
but um what is dude into??? what has he failed at that makes him feel he has no more options but the forces?

This is my boy. this is truly "Good People". He was raised in Turner. His mom got divorced when he was still living at home. They are really close.
My boy used to drive 20min. to front me a nickel. knowallImean? Just caus. He was the 200 pounde teddy bear at the party, kicking out the guy calling females out of their name. Yeah that guy.
He has so much potential. And between all of the B.S. inside Kc and outside KC, I think hes beganing to snap.
Trust me, I have friends that work for KKFI, Political Campaigns, and
1/2 price books. He knows. He will Not listen.

No offense but tell your friend to get his head checked. Search for some videos online bout stuff going on in Iraq i'm sure that might change him alittle. Also tell him its possible congress might stop funding the war wich means the troops will be out there with very little and that'll be a disaster. Also remind him hes not fight for our freedom over there he just so happens to be stuck in the middle of a civil war.

Umm.. Why are ya'll trying to be political on this issue? That's why you're not going to get through to him. He said he wants to do something for his life. The military IS the answer to build yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually. The only problem is that there is a wack ass war going on.
You should support him in his choice of joining because it takes a lot of courage and determination. The only problem is his choice of the branch of the military he wants to go to.
There are also many jobs that are non-deployable were he won't even have to go to the Middle East. If he got the high ASFAB scores like you say, he can pick and choose and possibly get guaranteed non-deployment in his contract.
It's ALL up to him.

You dont understand. All of my friends have been to alot of protest on the Plaza. He is very aware of the situation. trust me he has heard every possible reason, why he should not go. He may have even lost a few friends.
I need someone who has seen it first hand. He is [i:daf79efca9]so[/i:daf79efca9] sure that they wont send him to Iraq. He does not have a college education. I kept telling him, "If you sign up today, you will be in Iraq in 3 months". I have heard too many stories on KKFI and NPR, that were from and about recruits that were lied too.
If you know someone. Hit me please. I feel helpless about the war. this is something I might beable to stop.
Thanks

I don't understand? Dog, what is there not to understand? I got a follow Kenyan cat I recruited in the Marines that just came home in Jan. He was there and he CHOSE.
Every situation is different though, so you can't tell him that he'll be there in 3 mos. Whether you hear it from me or my homie that just came back. It all depends on his contract. They have to abide by his contract. Congress doesn't allow the Military to F around with that.

You can't throw all vets in 1 pot though. That's like saying well, welfare is pointless because so many scam the system. The minority shouldn't speak for the majority.
I'm a vet, that wasn't in Iraq, but still a vet and I got and am still getting everything I was promised. Those that didn't probably relied on a recruiter to promise them things without a contract. If it's on paper 98% of the time it will happen.
If a man or woman wants to do something positive with their life, I don't see that there would ever be a bad time to do that.

to put my 2 cents in, since i'm as everyone knows a dependant to a military member....
joining the military as a whole is a good look, as far as being financially stable, the benefits, and your potential opportunities to get your education paid for.
as far as which branch is the best, it's probably all in perspective. although everybody i've heard that joined the Army said the way they were treated was terrible.
as far as deploying, it's all relative to your career field what your experience is over there. i know people that sat at a desk for 6 months pushing papers that never saw any action side for the sounds of mortars in the distance. i know it's pretty lucrative financially to get deployed. your base pay is tax free, you get hazard pay, cost of living expense, etc. my boy and his wife both were deployed at the same time for a year in Iraq and they came back with more than $30,000 in their savings account.
i know if i'm not or i feel like i'm not doing anything with myself when i'm 29 as is Ace's boys situation, you'll probably be getting letters from me in basic training.
just think if he makes a career out of it, puts in 20 years, he's retired by 49. how many people do you know that'll be retired w/ a full pension at 49. not me i'ma probably be working till i'm 70.

Discipline, respect, knowledge, and international consious is bullshit? Wow, you obviously have never served.
That's what is funny to me. People that have NEVER and will never serve always tend to minimize the worth of the military and what it does for people.

Minimize?
My cousin was the first Black female pilot in the Armed Forces (just saw her Saturday). I'd never minimize what a career or stint in the military can offer an individual.
Ace is just saying there are other, safer, options his boy can align himself with that will provide the same level of discipline, respect, knowledge and conscientiousness.

I guess if you need someone else to hold your hand while you learn about life then yeah the military's great. I have no idea what you were trying to get across with the whole "personal cause". There's no justice in involving yourself (personal) when the political backing of your venture is widely known as bullshit. I guess dying for a President you never elected is totally worth it.
Discipline, respect, knowledge, and international consious is bullshit? No, but claiming the only way to attain them lies within a single organization definitely is.

Damn... Pay attention!
Noone said that the ONLY way to better oneself is the military. Nor did I say that was the only way he could learn these things. What... I... said.. was..
The military creates the ideal environment for one to learn these traits and pays you for it. It's straight stupid to discourage this man unnecessarily if he is choosing THIS path to achieve a level in his life. Politics aside.
And I'd really doubt that you could run up to any member of the military and tell them that their hand was being held through their service term. What does that even mean? More HHKC quotables from someone with no knowledge of the topic at hand.

No, I understand you. I respect your opinion. Mine just happens to be different. I can't understand for the life of me joining the military at a time when a completely unjust war is going on. What are these soldiers dying for? We're fighting an endless war. Our presence overseas is just adding to the death that would already be happening if we weren't there. I'm glad you had a good experience with the military and came out healthy to enjoy what you learned. Not everyone has been as fortunate.

After a long talk, a few episodes of Democracy Now, and a trip to a Peace rally, a chat with a veteran who just got home from his second tour in Iraq. (after he singed up to work some office job on a base in Texas)
He has decided that the military isn't a place for anyone right now. He isn't going to sign nor join anything.
Peace

Ace, I would let him know that you understand what he's going through and if he is dead set on joining the military, he should join the Navy. He will most likely not have to go to Iraq and will get to see the world and enjoy some benefits. just my opinion...

there's a certain far right website, signed by people like Jeb Bush, Dick Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz, etc. that tells you which countries they are planning to invade, and a suggestion that there's even an order in which they plan to do it.. we were going to invade iraq, syria, then iran, but israel wanted us to go to iran first. the document i'm talking about was released in september 2000 and refers to what we would do in the case of a "new pearl harbor"
that's why there's a lot of shit that bush is trying to start in iran even though they aren't really doing much that would start any conflict. sound familiar?
actually, supposedly iran has been making a small amount of progress in the way of democracy in the past decade.

Have we invaded Iran yet? I know the war propaganda machine is heating up again by the Bush admin again though. I spoke to my congressmen the other day and made it clear if a war is to happen with Iran he won't be getting my vote. I guess it doesn't matter if Bush is president or not once Hilliary Clinton is elected it'll be same shit different name, Americans will continue to suffer.

I wish Obama would win but I've heard hes down by as many as 30% to Clinton. I like how people cry how our government sucks yet the sheep have continued to elect a Bush or Clinton the past 20 years.

Yeah its too bad. just to think she was on the board at wal-Mart ( you suck if you shop there) for seven years and she did nothing for the little people. I mean wal-mart is in every poor little city in the U.S. so how could you nit get the hool up, let alone benefits.
I mean if she couldn't do shit for a little shit like that, how is she going to do shit for me and my country?
She did nothing for women while she was on the board of the 25th most richest country in the nation (out of 400).
