ROONEY September 15, 2005 The college campus is an ideal place for musical innovation. The University of Kansas at Lawrence gave SoundsGood the chance to shine and Nick Hardt the opportunity to perform. SoundsGood and Hardt are just two of the performers taking the stage tonight at Knickerbockers. Dro of Thoughtless Poets and Equal Eyes are also featured. Joe Good and Miles Bonny of SoundsGood met at Lawrence, but came into their own in Kansas City. Good and Bonny have roots in jazz but found their vocations in hip-hop. Good’s grandmother was a Kansas City jazz pianist, and Bonny’s father was a jazz trumpeter on the East Coast. “We both had a lot of jazz in our upbringings, and it’s always been a part of our trying to get an emotional reaction from people,” Good said. SoundsGood’s catalog includes two studio albums: “Joe Good and Miles Bonny Present SoundsGood” and “Biscuits and Gravy.” The material is reminiscent of De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest with a twist. “This is musically-based hip-hop, not just rhymes and beats,” Good said. “We’re regular guys with a passion for music. We want hip-hop to be respected as music and not just a novelty.” Lincoln is the fifth stop on SoundsGood’s first national tour. The tour is in support of “Biscuits and Gravy,” but it is also an opportunity to move beyond territory the group already has won over. “We wanted to get out of Kansas City,” Bonny said. “We’ve got a good following there, but it’s kind of an adventure to be meeting new people in each place.” So far, the tour has stopped in Minneapolis, Minn., and Des Moines, Ames and Grinnell, Iowa. All of these towns have large college populations. SoundsGood is confident that their hip-hop mission finds welcoming ears near colleges. “We’re just out of college, so we still connect with the college mindset, but we also connect with the adults because we’re out there every day working hard,” Bonny said. Hardt also performs tonight. Hardt is a sophomore English major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Growing up just south of Lincoln, Hardt had an early introduction to hip-hop. “All my sisters’ boyfriends were hugely into hip-hop. They pounded out rap and I just started loving it,” Hardt said. Hardt, Bonny and Good share a common Midwestern background. Hardt believes the universal nature of the human experience gives his style of hip-hop and rap a wide range of appeal. “Non-interest in hip-hop comes from the inability to relate to it, like shooting people or something,” Hardt said. “I write about my life. I didn’t grow up in a ghetto. A lot of people who live in Nebraska go through the same things I do.” Tonight’s show was planned weeks ago, but Hurricane Katrina changed the focus of the concert. Hardt and the other performers felt the need to do something. “I contacted the Red Cross and asked how I could go about making the show benefit the Hurricane Relief Fund,” Hardt said. Good agrees that artists can participate in hurricane relief efforts. “We don’t just want to make a lot of money and make music. We want to change people’s lives,” Good said. “The least we can do is entertain some people and get some donations to help these people.” All proceeds from the $5 cover will go to the Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund. Lyrics And Beats So Green, It Makes My Genius Have Envy By da bookman on September 5, 2005 - 9:43pm. http://www.musicforamerica.org/node/84171 Welcome to the 71st edition The Run-Off Groove. I am John Book, and that’s something worth saving. Soundsgood may sound like a bold name, but if you’re looking for a way to get into the consciousness of your fans, why not be upfront and let them know how you really feel? By combining spirited lyrics and flows with well thought out beats, it seems to me that these guys (Joe Good and Miles Bonny) are in this to let people know that rap music can still be done without sacrificing creativity. Breaking the parameters of sound, breaking things down and building from the ground up are the words which can be heard during the introduction to “Worldwide”, and this is exactly what they do on this album, Biscuits & Gravy (Innatesounds). In a genre where mainstream album covers are as sugarcoated as porn DVD’s, Soundsgood’s cover has them going back in time, drinking tea, pinky up. But it’s the now, and hopefully new listeners will look at that, be interested, and want to know what’s beyond the cover. They will be wonderfully rewarded. The album begins with a set of headnodders, and where other groups will make the beat sound nice but offer words that are worthless, here the words and beats go hand in hand. Inbetween verses, the vocal harmonies in “Everything” might sound a bit like Jurassic 5. “Money” could appeal to fans of Dilated Peoples, although the vocal sample underneath the bridge displays the kind of emotional depth that many groups lack. There’s a bit more to grip on, and I found myself wanting to put certain songs on repeat before finishing the album. “Saturday” is one of Biscuits & Gravy’s highlights, with a beat that one might expect on an Outkast album. Yes, it is a party track that celebrates the greatness of looking for someone who can offer good smokes and their bra, but within the party vibe they are still keeping themselves in check. Rapper Gunn Jakc assists Joe Good in this track, and while he is willing to give himself up for the warmth of a woman, Gunn puts up the mission for himself and his hip-hop comrades: “all your punchlines ain’t fucking with my lyrical”. The pace and sequencing of this album is also well thought out, and what I liked the most about this is how each track sounds different from the previous track. It’s not a 15 song CD with the same musical template used over and over, nor is it something that sounds forced, as if they were uncomfortable in moving from a laid back sinister sounding song (“She Got Game”) or something very old school (“Fresh”). I would compare this to the first album by The Pharcyde album, where you might get a sense for what they’re about during the first few songs, but they keep on switching up and one is not sure what to expect next. Joe Good’s lyrics and raps can easily change from track to track, which might startle those who expect for a rapper to stay in one style, with one flow, throughout his entire discography. Joe is the exception to the non-existent rule. The thought process in the production arena is amazing, and Miles Bonny’s production on this album deserves to be recognized. Together, Soundsgood are a group that could easily set the trend for what needs to be heard in hip-hop. Yet I have a funny feeling these Kansas City guys would be happy with knowing their music is getting across to those who are, to paraphrase Queen Latifah, hungry for the good stuff. (You can order your copy of Soundsgood’s CD through CD Baby or through the Innatesounds website.)
