Stik, I respect where you are comming from. Sometimes I've even thought about walking away from hip hop all together because i felt that the soul is gone. It has really been hitting me lately walking away because of a passing of my best friend this week, one of the cats I first taught to dj(r.i.p travel hester). I know you feel like some people don't understand or appreciate the struggle and why bother trying to prove your point when its just going to be thrown to the side. Musically the track you sent me was one of the most refreshing songs i've heard in a long time, It reminded me of driving through topeka from the suburbs to the hoods. Between that and the new tracks i've heard from SQ and Joc, i was really like forget(cleaner term for the kidds) hip hop and focus on techno and soul. many times i've wonder why put myself in the struggle here, its not like you need kansas city, its just once city out of many and its easier to get on in chicago and stl than here(less drama, politics and bs more venues and radio support in other markets). I mean some of the most refreshing stuff has been on the street side and i feel like supporting them because they are the ones who are lost in the struggle and do what they have to do to survive(its not pretty or great what they do, but you do what you gotta do). The thing is stik, its a bigger picture out there more than this message board and this city, keep doing you dropping quality music and respect is the cornerstone of power, keep doing quality music and respect is there, real recoginze real, Stik i got your info and i will hit you later peace will aka dj shad The soul movement comming soon R.I.P TraVel Hester 1980-2007

Electronic music right now is about a billion times more creative than any hiphop I've heard recently...and a lot of the hiphop I have heard that I thought was cool is just pulling electronic music style synths and such into that realm ala "My Love" or a some the crazier hyphy shit I've been playing. Honestly though...for you guys thinking the hiphop scene is lame here, the electronic scene is just as bad with many times less money involved for the djs. Although I will say the energy and general party atmosphere of a bad electronic event still demolishes a good hiphop show. If you guys are interested in seeing a marriage of solid hiphop and electronic music come to the Shake & Pop sendoff..Dj Mel is incredible..voted best dj in Austin 3 years running.

I ain't mad at you Stik. I don't post on HHKC that often. F.Y.I. Everyday that I awake, I have to fall in love with Hip-Hop (more specifically Kansas City's Hip-Hop wasteland) all over again. Some days, I do and it's a beautiful thing. Some days I don't, and feel like a large piece of me is missing. I often ask myself "Why do I keep doing this to myself?" And the only answer I can come up with is "Hip-Hop chose me, and won't let me rest until I'm done doing..." I don't know what THAT is, but I've accepted that I'm here for it. Just have to "do you" in the process, to maintain sanity.

I'm not bitching i have made movements here, alot of us are tired of fighting for nothing. I talk to the icons on a daily about their fustrations and everything they have done to help. YOu can ask the true heads in the city my credentials. I don't have shit else to prove. I am being calm about the words I really want to say. Ive seen the way this city have done icons and legends, which is total bullshit and this is why i fight for those but it comes a time where its like you know what, its time to step back and put that negative energy to something postive and towards a new movement. Sku is right the energy you see when mac dre is played is crazy, its liek watching rufus thomas during wattstax or jessie jackson in save the children. I didn't do this for the money, if I did I would have sold my soul a long time ago and rock the lexus. I deal with venue owners talking bad about hip hop(and the crappy club owners who don't want to pay and you have to fight for money) and trying to prove points, i deal with politics with the radio, i deal with promo reps and label trying to get shows for promo to prove a point, i handle label calls asking who's hot and who to sign for someone(only to get stabbed in the back once I co-sign for someone), to say i'm bitching and not doing nothing.....man (insert favorite profanity here) please.....I lost many connections moving here(label reps turing the back), people telling me to leave my wifey and i could be even bigger(why to be a old dj at home with bustdowns(aka groupies) and no peace of mind to try to "help" the scene here and lost contact with alot of people who meant something in my life and it comes a time where i need to enjoy life. Im just from now on really say how i feel call me the Dick Gregory or Paul Mooney im tired of being the alvin brooks of the city peace dj shad aka will sku get at me i got some hot juke tracks for you

everything said feels like truth including hating this board and the ish that goes on here. somestimes in the wee hours of the morning as I am pondering kansas city, hiphop in kansas city, the key players in the scene here (i know is there really a scene here?) and the plans I am making for a summer of events, I think fu*k this, why am I doing this, fighting for these dreams like this board and what I hope it can do or the KC hiphop Foundation that is the larger vision behind this board. then I sleep, wake, move though my day, listen to local artists music and think this is why I have these dreams of our own center, our own agenda being put forth, to ease some of the struggle and tension. to support the local creativity and expression These projects are my creative expression and celebration of yours and my life. like PL and many others have said, hiphop chose me and then I chose it right back. nothing will solve everything, trust, but a common excepted direction of creativity, excellence, collaboration, and growth at the heart of us will go a long way in helping us all get about our lives as people living quality lives. so I say I feel you stik, leave if that makes your life and artistic focus better for you. I say this to anybody feelin they need a break from the desention frustration, and bickering that I witness here. be about that which "feeds your soul" the rest is just stuff. hiphop is alive in each of us, it is changing and growing, witness its growing pains, but never forget the energies that gave birth to it(the ORIGINAL INTENTION) " you can lock me away from the world, act like I ain't there, diss everything that is my life, AND STILL I RAISE MUTHAFU*KER". or as I like to say " they can't eat me" pure joy of life celebrated through individual expression will never die. go to the joy always peace do you and I'll do me nrg

I am speaking of the culture and the artforms, they are not static. things that stand still are dead. TRY EXPANDING YOUR BELIEFS/VIEWS, TAKE A DEEP BREATH WHILE REMEMBERING THE ORIGINAL INTENTION OF THOSE WHO GAVE BIRTH TO THIS CULTURE And SEE THAT THERE IS PLENTY OF SPACE INSIDE WHAT WE'RE CALLING "HIPHOP" WORLDWIDE FOR EVOLUTION THROUGH EXPLORATION and INNOVATION. this is where being you and me being me comes in. Express YOU to the fullest don't worry bout hiphop its fine.

So sad to hear and see on all of this bullsh*t on a day I've been looking forward to for a minute. No disrespect....but eff all those thoughts about Hip Hop being dead.... and being bored with Hip Hop? WTF? I was bored with Hip Hop when everybody was blastin DR. Dre and the Chronic. I was bored when everybody was bumpin DMX. I was bored with Hip Hop in between Snow, Vanilla Ice, and the whole Criss Cross and Hammer jump off. That's when I got into underground. I was getting mad made fun of for listining to "back pack rap". Tribe, L.O.N.S, X Clan. When the Wu came out I was always explaining who they were for like two years. "Non-believers" were singing "gin and Juice" and I was Llike "Raw, Ill give it to ya!" know what I mean. I was there for "the Fire Which You Burn Slow"----Company Flow , Dose One, ALias,Mr. Lif, and Roots Manuva from like 2002....The list is extreme get at me for schoolin. If you said you are bored with Hip Hop and you don't know who these people are....die now. I was there when Hip Hop wasnt getting play on VH1 nor MTV and BET whatever. If you want to hop in and hop out. Get out now. How am I supposed to be bored with what I live? Uninspired? Sometimes. Yes. Unmotivated..Yes. But bored. In my very lowly opinion, If you are bored with Hip Hop, you aint Hip Hop. You just fakin it. Tell nas to take a triop to Darfur or Sudan. Spend a day with Iraqi Citizens. Take a week and go help rebuild in N.O., and if he can't write about that ish. and move and motivate minds. Then he is dead to me too as an artist. it wasnt easy to come up with new sounds for Hip Hop in the past but the did and do. If you think Hip Hop is dead, make sure you tell that to those old crazy guys, hanging around 18th and Vine tomorrow!! 👿 👿 👿 👿 Try turning off that radio Peace AF wheres my $$ for my love of hiphop ...new cd title maybe? had to vent.......this is a great day for the future of Kansas City Hip Hop.

I like hearing the growth or lack of it. I like seeing live performances especially, because thats the make it or break it point for a lot of local cats. watching folks best themselves from show to show I can tell who is taking themselves to heart, asking harder questions about what they want to do with their creativity and talents. so yeah local except when someone says hey ma, you'll wanna take a listen to this or that.

What I find so funny about Stik saying he doesn't want to post at a message board, is: the 5 or 6 people in this thread that are trying to fucking resurrect hip-hop, or debate as to whether or not it's "dead." COME ON MAN. We bitch, fuss and grovel over WHY Kansas City, Topeka, and Lawrence is struggling as a hip-hop scene, and not even 1 click away in another thread are arguing over whether not hip-hop is "dead." Come on man. All you seasoned ass veterans who are debating with my boy SKU, and knowledgeable experts on the subject, whether or not you posted a reponse, need to truly wisen up. Ok. Drum roll. Brrrrrrum! HIP-HOP CAN'T DIE!!!! HIP-HOP ISN'T ALIVE! HIP-DOP ISN'T DEAD! Nas made a fucking cute record, with a cute title, during a semi-crucial time of "hip-hop", that was definitely CUTE, and everyone jumps, twitching, nervous, scared as all hell. Like, "OH MY GOD. The guy who has released like 7 albums, with only 2 of them being good, caught a revamped sense of fame because Jay-Z dissed him to get more respect from lyric fans, made a new album with the most controversial title ever. It's worse than aborted babies. It's worse than blue-eyed cracker Mac Lethal dissing Jesus on stage. It's. It's. It's... called HIP-HOP IS DEAD. Dude. Hip-Hop is just a word. It's kind of a form of music that will become a flash in the pan that is comparable to "hair-band rock" if you give it a few more years. Too much arguing over whether or not hip-hop is dead, or alive. What the fuck is hip-hop? People in rougher parts of my own city than me seem to be able to school me on the history of hip-hop. But I can recite every word from every South Central Cartel record. Wait. I can quote Company Flow's entire catalogue. Wait. I rapped with El-P. Wait. El-P was on the owner of my current label's flagship record. Wait. My label owner signed Brother Ali who features Whipper Whip on his new record. Wait. Whipper Whip was in the Fantastic Five with Grandmaster Theodore. Wait. Grandmaster Theodore invented scratching on accident, but still invented it. Wait. That's so fucking hip-hop. Infact, the more I think about it: I've done songs with Slug, who has done songs with Murs, who has done songs with Shock G, who did songs with 2Pac, who acted in a movie with James Belushi, who is brothers with Jim Belushi, who acted in a movie with Kevin Bacon. AM I 6 STEPS AWAY FROM KEVIN BACON?!?!?! OH MY GOD!!!!!!! IM SO HIP-HOP. HIP-HOP CANT BE DEAD! Wait. Me and DJ SKU toured together. He kills it live. We toured with people who know Whipper Whip, who knows Grandmaster Theodore, who invented scratching, which is done by DJs, whom are the BaCkBoNe Of HiP-HoP yO! It doesn't matter. DJ SKU is tired of hip-hop. How dare he be tired of such a lively culture. He spins records 26 times a week, for knucklehead ass thugs who claim hip-hop is being completely ruled by the South, which makes a lot of really shitty music, besides Little Wayne, and a few others with cool beats who say their car is the color of a Boise, Idaho potatoe, and HE is under fire all of the sudden? Nope. Get over it. Hip-hop can't die. It isn't alive. There are 4 trillion people on this earth who like GZA, and bounce to that one Atlanta rap song featuring Lil Boosie, who also get into a little Aesop Rock. There are 10 billion people who thinK Wu-Tang Clan is oldschool, but don't know a single word of Ice-T - Original Gangster. Furthermore, there are 2 million people who remember the day that young ass Chuck D entered the scene and started kinda giving hip-hop a *new* shape. If ANY of those people debate whether or not hip-hop is ALIVE or DEAD, then THEY should be the ones who die. Because honestly. THERE IS NO RIGHT OR WRONG ANSWER TO IT, and ARGUING about it, makes you RETARDED. SKU and Stik are completely just in their opinions. My great friend quit rapping because he didn't feel it anymore. His mother runs this site. He never even made a solo record, though he made amazing efforts with a producer who posts here. He left rap. It hurts me and other people. Does that mean hip-hop is DEAD? NO. It means fucking personal strife and personal revolutions are coming into play. It means what it means, which is: UH, WHATEVER THE FUCK YOU THINK IT MEANS. SKU is finding more musical comfort in other forms of music in live and personal listening environments. He LIKES, out of PERSONAL PREFERENCE, the SOUND of ELECTRONIC music more than he likes what he considers to be REDUNDANT, FAKE, BULLSHIT ASS RAP MUSIC. Or HIP-HOP, or whatever the fucking "hip-hop police" will allow us to call it. But um. You seen his record collection. You ever had SKU kill the tables for you in a live setting? You ever discussed rap music with him? If so, then you completely support his decision to NOT FUCKING ENJOY GARBAGE ASS RAP MUSIC. Because he knows GOOD music. GOOD HIP-HOP music. Don't EVER question that. He is a grown man who can state his opinion if he wants to without being held to the flames by kiddies. STIK doesn't wanna post here anymore. Cool. Good for him. Support that. He can rap his ass off, but has a personal vendetta with the personal results posting here gives him. I guess my point is... Why does every fucking thread on here always equate to HIP-HOP HOLOCAUST? None of us will ever unanimously agree on anything regarding hip-hop. Break the entire world down in the same light. THAT'S your answer. Someone always knows more about rap/hip-hop than you do. Someone always remember somethng a little more golden than you. Someone always witnessed something YOU DIDN'T WITNESS. Let THAT be special to you. The biggest problem with Kansas City's hip-hop scene is no one will just be fucking honest. Everyone is selfish. Everyone has their own personal project at self-interest, yet everyone claims to be "IN IT FOR THE SCENE." Dude, no one is going to be mad at you if you make your own world big without worrying about something that is as ambiguous as the "KANSAS CITY HIP-HOP SCENE." Get off your ass, quit channeling emotion through us, and BUILD YOU. YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU. YOU = US. BUT US, SURE AS FUCK DOES NOT = HIP-HOP. OR KANSAS CITY HIP-HOP. AND KANSAS CITY HIP-HOP WILL NEVER = TRUTH.

[quote:b28273cec6="maclethal"]What I find so funny about Stik saying he doesn't want to post at a message board, is: the 5 or 6 people in this thread that are trying to fucking resurrect hip-hop, or debate as to whether or not it's "dead." COME ON MAN. AND KANSAS CITY HIP-HOP WILL NEVER = TRUTH.[/quote:b28273cec6] Why do you read anything period? Oh that's right ❗ books were written so we could all ignore them and everyone elses opinion 💡 By the way the world doesn't revolve around you and when it does you'll be GOD and not Mac Lethal. Don't ever diss a fuckin Icon -NAS- John Brown sold more records than you muthafucka [color=yellow:b28273cec6]HALLELAJUAH HOLLA BACK!!![/color:b28273cec6]

Speaking of reality shows, the icon Nas just signed a deal for a reality show with him and Kelis. They will have cute little video cameras following them around alllll daaaaay lllloooong. Now he can be just like hip-hop figures such as Hulk Hogan, the Hotti Gotti Boyz, and Tom Sizemore. And Andrew Dice Clay. And Anna Nicole Smith. And Danny Bonaduce. I like Nas. But a metaphorical album title has left people dispossessed from the ability to shut the fuck up and enjoy the music. Here's a totally hip-hop, Blblical proverb way of putting it: YOU CAN'T MOVE FORWARD IN A CIRCULAR MAZE. Even with a lopsided ear, a receiting hairline, pasty white skin, and a beer filled tummy-- I haven't worked a job in 4 years. Thanks rap music!

While I think it's silly to say the culture is dead I also realize Nas is simply endorsing the sentiments of many, many people. That God awful phrase existed long before he cut that album. Take that with a grain of salt. Everyone is entitled to do and feel how they please... Stik, Mac, Reach, Sku and dude that works the closing shift at Big Lots.

Reality shows are the new 20. Word Reach. I remember the whole "Punk is dead." movement. I suppose my point is questioning the new surge of people discussing hip-hop being "dead" like it's a possibility.

HAHA I hope I was reading that wrong but did Mac diss Nas? Only 2 albums that were good? You sure you listen to hip-hop Mac? Don't complain about people giving there opinons after all THIS IS A MESSAGE BOARD. Another thing I can't stand these cats that are lower on the food chain trying to take shots at legends.

I like Nas. That's why I said "I like Nas." Not really sure if The Game's "take shots at legends" [sic] is very pertinent or not. Probably the most insignificant part of my post was saying Nas made 2 good records. It was a rather drawn-out point suggesting that arguing over whether or not "hip-hop is dead" is like arguing about whether or not there is a God. It's like an impassioned discussion in the backyard, smoked-out, drinking beer, that starts heated, sometimes over-the-top arguments that NEVER get resolved and suck the energy out of people forcing them to withdraw entirely, i.e. Sku, Stik.

Having a camera following you around doesn't equal selling out. It equals being an undeniably dope emcee with a camera following you around. Not deep... Simple. Every turn an artist of his stature takes is a good turn for puttin somethin real in the fore-front.

However there is no discussion, hiphop's very not dead. It's in your iPod and on your shelf, it's in mass marketing campaigns, it's in the mainstream and the underground and little kids whose parents dress them in timbs and hoodies, it's in blinged out ring pops on those same kids fingers lookin like they rockin some old school Run DMC ice, it's all around you and no one can stop it. Our culture has reached a level so broad that it's no longer an individual puppy for you to play with by yourself, each generation spurts out a litter bigger than the last and if you feel like you're litter's dying off maybe you should get out an find where the rest of them went because they're out there, the old dogs are teaching the puppies new tricks which is why we still hear dope artists hit the scene. Hmmm, I think I want a puppy now. Maybe a kitten, yeah my apartments too small for a dog, probably a cat would do. mmmmm... cats

yo i browse this forum here and there but dont really post... i used to post more when LHH.com was around, One thing i want to get through is how is any one post to know whats goin on locally in the area, Come here in Topeka and ask your average dude "Hey you heard of so and so? theyll laugh and be like "whos that bro?"" Without the internet i woulda never heard of much of the artist i listen to. I hate all these shows up in KC, nothin is ever really poppin up in the Top. Im not hateing but i hate Lawrence and KC, Whats with the Top, I know lawrence is vastly dif than Topeka, but it pisses me off, always have to check for lawrence or fuckin kc. Some than i have gotten tired of is lazy sampling, you know a sample thrown with drums and other touch ups, i want to hear some melody, some cinematic music, im tired of hearing 4 bars of boring loops. kick kick snare hi-hat kick kick snare hi-hat with there being some bass. i wanna hear harmonicas, guitars, synths, triangles, harps, saxophones, scratches, rhodes, piano,,,(Ha.) ive also got into the electronic, chill out type music, i wish there was a group or MC that had that flavor. but ive recently heard of "Boards of Canada" dope CD, but at the same time i was blastin "Best of Gangstarr". hopefully you can read what i wrote, im not comin off as "ERR Fuck U", Pretend Big bird is saying this cuz its hard to make people understand the tone of words, im just im my own world right now. oh and recent Hip Hop oriented albums that ive got is Count Base D, Cyne(check 4 these guys!) Miles Bonny Smell Smoke?

To some degree these discussions are an attempt to fill in the gaps of information we don't have. Stik never went on record as to why he's going to abstain so... Really all of this is speculative anyway. Frustration with the scene or the Rap music-at large may have nothing at all to do with why he's going to steer clear of this forum. At the end of the day dude don't wanna post here anymore and folk gotta shake hands with that. Regardless of what his reasons are. This has deviated quite a bit so... We probably should close the thread entirely.
