In what could be a landmark decision in favor of independent music, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is considering an internal proposal that would require commercial broadcasters to reserve a certain amount of airtime for “independently produced” music, the Hollywood Reporter revealed today. The proposal comes in the wake of recent payola scandals involving the nation’s major record labels and largest broadcasting conglomerates, which left some FCC commissioners concerned about the majors’ ability to dominate the airwaves. In exchange for guaranteeing airtime to independent artists, the FCC would not require radio broadcasters to admit to any wrongdoing.

yeah like not admitting it makes it go away. and what system would they use to track independent music plays soundscan seems to much like too little to late. they know they were wrong and they still just about money. now they gone tap into the indie scene and start milking it. hey I say indie's yall got them (the majors ) over a barrel, dont' give in to this rheteric yet. they ain't giving you enough for your efforts yet. stay yo course in fact yeah let em die a little bit more so they will come correct and make valuable deals you know humble as a gazillionaire can get, sorry, while this is a good sign, they ain't humble, they just caught. until they feel an even bigger pinch, they ain't negoiating in good faith, it will be same old ish with a different set of artists.

Honestly I can't see how this will truly benefit indie artists. It'll still be payola-driven. There will only be so much time allotted for independent artists so that time will come at a premium. And radio stations will want to profit from it.

I see it as a damn good thing, if for nothing else because it will make stations get out of their five song rotations.
