I was talkin to a promoter the other day about setting up a show & he expressed that he wanted it to start around 10. Now most of us on here know, artist or fan, that 10 really means 11:30. This is an issue that for real has bothered me for sometime.....
Why is it that a show can never start on time?
I think alot of it boils down to respect, or lack there of. I think the artist & promoter should take responsibility for getting the show off the ground @ the agreed time. Alot of times, the artist wont even show up until AFTER the agreed time to wait until more people arrive b/c no one wants to perform for an empty house, but @ the same time, what about those who were there @ the agreed time? Isnt that disrespectful not to mention slightly egotistical to say that i wont show up until I feel like it cuz no one is there anyway? In turn fans have this "get there when i get there" mentatilty cuz they know the artist aint goin on when they supposed to, but doesnt that show disrespect for the artist that do wanna start on time? As an artist & fan, Im most certainly guilty of all charges, but think of the potential # of fans we are missing simply because we cant stick to the alloted time. I've had many people tell me they would love to come out but they fear that they will be there till 12 or 1 in the morning, which sucks to hear as an artist, but as a working man I can most certainly understand.
As I've performed more, I've becomed less concerned with people that turn out & more concerened with the people that tune in, it is there that your true fanbase lies. If these are the people that are buying your music & merchandise, passing the word on to their peers about your music, always visting your website for new info, than arent these the people that the shows are really for? Lets face it, if you performed in alot of bars like me, anybody will think your music sounds good after a few too many, so why sit back & wait for the bar regualrs to show up,expecially when I know they not coming to see me anyway? I dont know where along the line this trend got started but it needs to be vanquished. Let them know that the doors will be open & such & such a time but the show will start @ this time PROMPTLY! Those who are your true fans will be there.
Maybe this is just the fan in me talking wanting to get a lil more than just good music to listen to, but i know as an artist, there is nuthin better to me when someone tells me I really dig your stuff & if I know that they are gonna be faithful to me, the least I can do is give the same respect.........
I dunno....Madden's callin me....gotta go...

yeah I have been having this thought for years now. I have discussed it with promoters, fans, artists, venue owners hell anybody who would talk back to me about it and its like that question which came first the chicken or the egg.
dont know bout anybody else but, I like to start things on time. having said that, I have put on events that last for hours. if its a four how thing, I can count on 1 finger the times it started on time. its more like 2 hours into it folks (fans) start coming and then they find the groove and wanna stay longer than the ending time. the artists I have worked with for the most part are fans and artists too so they come a little early if they are first up and generally stay if their not giggin that night.(I do mostly daytime outdoors events.
so I start and end on time. that is the conclusion I have come to after it all. with the artists I invite, I give a time frame they will perform within and we just go for it. when its time to stop we stop if you didn't get there that's ok cuz we free to make our own decisions about all that.
I am going to be working with contracts this year. I have done this off and on, but now thats what I am committing to totally.
I have also done production meetings where we map everything out together and hash out most of the details together. I like to designate each area of support needed and recruit folks for them, meet with them before we start the event and this year I am appointing hosts for each of my events, so I can be free to roam about, tend to supplies, performers, and volunteers without hosting. we'll see how that goes.
with that said, I think some of the confusion comes from no true leadership before during and after events. its sorta by team or default that a lot of decisions are being made. this is hard cuz the lack of direction gets conveyed to the audience adn then they get anxious too.
they show up nothing is happening sep they know something is gonna happen almost to the point of anticlimatic by the time things get underway.
it doesn't have to be that way whether you are one or thirty.
planning, agreement and leadership that's what I'm saying.

I'm in agreement with all that was said. Unless there are situations out of my control, I try to be at events before they start...whether performing or as a fan...I always think that maybe once (just once) there's the possibility of missing something if I show up 45 minutes or an hour late...but that never happens. I'm going to start showing up to shows with homework or a good book so I have something to do 😆
Necia, are you talking about organizing events like hip hop week etc?
- Feb 17, 2007 11:03pm by phism
usually because it hinges on multiple people all being on time and usually at least one person is running behind, if not all of them.
sometimes that irritates me too. start your shit at 7 (8) and you'll have a lot more overall time for everything... but again i'm not thinking in terms of bar time.

Hey Lou,
Don't trip, i say it like that either you get their early or you miss a show. I've seen people throw diva fits about trying to have prime time and its no point to it.I like to do my thing early and leave ebcause time waits for no one. I don't believe in being late or showing up when i feel like it. At the end of the day, people will talk about what they missed because they were late or not there. People got it easy in this market, i've seen it plenty times in other markets where if you were late the promoter cut you from the bill no money no questions asked because they broke the contract. i mean as an artist, you should be at the venue early to know whats going on. Your right about performing on time, why heck berry gordy used to fine his artists and james brown was a stickler and i grew up on that mentality. Study the history of berry gordy or james and see how they were strict on time.

I think artist here do take alot of things for granted, including our fans, which is unfortunate coming from such a small market where each fan is vital. I guess the solution is like Shad & Necia said (& thank you Necia for your extremley antimated solution 🙂 is to start the show on time and if you see it, you see it. If you dont, you dont. If it means that much to the fan, they will be there & if it means that much to the artist, he will give those who are there what they came to see, at the time they came to see it.
This topic arose from the frustration I had with the promoter, but in turn it made me really evaluate myself & my responsibilty as an artist.
Someone once to me you have to be the change you wanna see 😉

A wise person once told me, "You make your own sweet-spot. 😯 " Since then, I haven't worried about the amount of people in the crowd at performance time. I just worry about the performance going as well as possible because this is the show that's going on the road (where people actually show up on time).
I believe that "WE" as a Hip-Hop community are spoiled. We're surrounded by dope mc's, dj's, graf writers, b-boys/girls, and heads. All "local" and available essentially whenever we want. So we take some of the simpler things for granted, like starting on time. When DJ Premiere played the Record Bar, the parking lot was PACKED at 8 o'clock for a 10 o'clock show. So we know how to arrive when we need to. Maybe when the "local" talent is no longer so accessible to the "local" fan base, every moment spent between artist and fan will be perceived as more valuable. 8)

I remember having this very conversation with you earlier this year.
This thought has been in heavy rotation ever since.

I gotta say I was caught off guard when I moved down to Austin and shows actually started on time. I damn near missed several shows because of it. I literally missed almost an entire Damien Marley set and it's been the same story at most hip hop shows. Maybe it's a KC thing.
