Topic: 02.23.07 Ultra Music Contest (DJ Battle)
- Jan 25, 2007 11:17pm by DEMENCHA
From the music editor at The Pitch Weekly:
"Hey, DJs, the Winter Music Conference in Miami beckons. We can hear your Yeah, rights all the way downtown, but wait! For the third consecutive year, the Pitch is sending one talented local spinner to perform at the conference-closing Ultra Music Festival, a two-day event that takes place on March 23 and March 24 and features the legendary likes of Paul Van Dyk, Tiesto, Shiny Toy Guns and — get this — the Cure. If you think you have what it takes to make Robert Smith shake his 'fro, send us a mind-blowing mix of your own crafting (on CD), along with contact information, by Friday, February 9. Bring it by our office or mail it to: Ultra Music Contest, attn: Jason Harper, The Pitch, 1701 Main, Kansas City, MO 64108. From the submissions, we'll select five finalists (who will be announced in the February 15 and February 22 issues of the Pitch; check out their submissions at pitch.com) to compete in our official Pitch Ultra Music Contest on Friday, February 23, at a venue to be determined, where a panel of judges will select the winner of an all-star spinoff. The winner will be crowned at the event and announced in our March 1 issue. Individual entries only — there can be only one champ. Also, if you use equipment other than the usual two vinyl turntables, and a mixer, please indicate the specs when you submit your mix. Contact [email protected] with questions. "

February 23rd (next Friday) at Skybox starting at 7:30 p.m. these five DJs will battle for a chance to play at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami in March. Basically, they get a free trip to Miami.
Spinstyles
DJ SKU
DJ Soap
DJ Shad
J Fortune
So to all you who are probably fans of at least one of these DJs, you need to come out to Skybox on this night (and get there early, timeslots will be decided at the event) TO SUPPORT YOUR MANSANDEM. The judges will be most importantly, looking for which DJ gets the asses shaking the most. So come out, have a drink or 6, and make some sense of this thing.
see you there

I hate the Pitch and I don't see what good they do for the local seen IMO. F the Pitch.
- Feb 19, 2007 09:21pm by nadia
Really? Can you elaborate?
- Feb 19, 2007 10:30pm by Lucidialect
Damn. Aside from Nathan Dinsdale's cynical ass, the Pitch has been overall pretty supportive of the local hiphop scene. And that's throughout the eight years I've been here. I'm curious too why someone thinks they can't, or haven't, help/ed us out.

I recall a year or two ago they had some hip-hop artist of the year or whatever and listed abunch of dudes but left a few off who truley deserved to be mentioned. As far as the Pitch as a whole they wrote that article on LJ which alot seemed made up. I'll go watch Cartoon Network if I wanna hear some Ducktales. Sometimes it seems they try real hard for shock value or something I dunno cant put my finger on it. I only read The Pitch to see if there are any shows or events that are happening that I didn't hear about anywhere else.

There have probably been a few bad articles. I'm sure more than a few. But I can recall probably close to a dozen positive ones within just the last year. It's all about what you're looking for though.

Sometimes the Pitch is only as good as what you give them to write about....
if you come with some busted ish...they'll bust on you..hahaha..
if you come correct...they'll support.
This is esp. true in the post Dinsdale days....

So I heard that all the hip hop dj's in the finals submitted a mixtape of non hip hop stuff. I think that is great!! Bringing hip hop dj skills to a Electronic Dance Music battle is so DOPE!! I can't wait to see all the action this Friday!!

Shad had the crowd hype with the hip hop shit and Soap got bars of Soap thrown at him ha ha!!! Classic night!! Here is my rating of how things should of turned out:
1st place SKU
2nd place Spinstyles
3rd J Fortune
4th Shad
5th Soap
Just my opinion....

I commend Soap for calling out the other dj's. It made the competition personal, so everyone stepped their game up. I'm not sure what the judging criteria was, but you could've made a legitimate case for any of them to win. Hopefully, we can see more competing in this fledgling rivalry. Maybe even more dj's will jump in. Take it to the wheels of steel!
