i wonder what everyone's favorite movie is and why?
i like three- brick, chinatown, and waking life.
the first two, because i am a full fledged film noir fanatic, and the last one because it makes you think.
a lot. so i'm curious to know what you all have to say.

let see..
i was stunned by the "realness" of Munich..
i've seen reports on how the Mossad ( Israili CIA ) operates and they captured it dead on...and DEAD i do mean. Those dudes don't play..haha
The caputure the time period really well to..the scenes..the wardrobe...the whole nine...
Band of Brothers is one of my faves of all time..
WWII is the last time america fought a "just war" if you can even call any war just...there are always atrocites in war but WWII shaped the world we live in so much that is an important history lesson to understand todays world politics. Plus it's done extreemly well.
FRESH
this is an old school classic mid 90s hip hop film...
it's got some great qoutes and good kid actors that tell a great "hood" story without being too ghetto..if you know what i mean..
"I'll bust out those dope moves son!" hahaa
other films to see that are ill are
The Education of Sonny Carson (1974)
The Way of the Gun
Enemy at the Gates

Genre: Just damn good.
Pulp Fiction - That's my easy answer.
Genre: Just damn lame.
Pluto Nash - I actually love it, amazing visuals. Plus, I got a very quality soundbyte out of it.
Genre: Comedy
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - I truely believe they captured the zany nonsense that my favorite books were full of.
Genre: Classic
12 Angry Men - It's old, it's black and white, it is AMAZING.
Genre: Action
Die Hard with a Vengence - Jeremy Irons makes the film tick.
Genre: Romance
Notting Hill - There goes any chance of me ever having any street-cred.
Genre: Foreign
(tie) House of FLYING Daggers/Kung-Fu Hustle. FLYING Daggers is excellent, Hustle is supahexcellent.
I haven't seen many, what you could call, "indie films", so my answers are, for the most part, Hollywood-leaned.
Honestly, I can spend all day listing my favorite movies and I know there are many that I haven't seen in a while that I am completely forgetting, but these eight represent what I like right now while I sit here and respond to this thread.

i kind of hated casino royale. james bond should never be tamed by a woman. you know, no offense to women or anything but that's just not in character. he's not supposed to meet his match. and ESPECIALLY not that woman, she was detestable and irritating. and homely.
which one is godzilla: destroy all monsters? godzilla 2000 was also pretty terrible/terrific.
other awful movies i love:
snakes on a plane (duh)
dolemite
anything by jon moritsugu (i mentioned Terminal USA. that movie has pretty much become the initiation rite into my inner circle of friends.)
probably any zombie movie whether it's good or not. i.e. the evil dead trilogy
i hope some day somebody remakes the Star Wars prequels and the Matrix sequels. this will never happen. some of the biggest on-screen disappointments of my life. i think i like LOTR and the original Star Wars trilogy equally. star wars is just more... important to me.

Heck yeah fellas, Frank Miller is dope. This is going to be an excellent movie if he sticks with his formula. I'm a huge Clash of the Titans fan, and I'm afraid that this is going to blow the Kraken right out of the water. I guess it's obvious that studios have a little more to work with now than when Titans hit the screens, but I never get tired of watching Medusa get buckwild with that bow and arrow. Pride and prejudice: KC film critic celebrates what others have ignored.
By ROBERT W. BUTLER
The Kansas City Star
Edwards' Top 100 films
Shawn Edwards gets frustrated watching the annual “100 Best Films†broadcasts created by the American Film Institute.
“There are always one or two token black films, but none that really reflect my point of view or that of my family and friends,†he said. “I realized that certain films are considered classics in the black community, but they’re never going to bump ‘Casablanca’ or ‘Citizen Kane’ off those lists.â€
Edwards, a film reviewer for WDAF-TV and a founder of the African-American Film Critics Association, decided to compile his own list of the best black films of all time and turn it into a documentary that parodies those AFI programs.
His “The 100 Best Black Films (Ever)†has its world premiere at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Gem Theater at 18th and Vine. Admission is free for the screening, which kicks off “A Celebration of Black Film 2007†as part of Black History Month.
The titles on Edwards’ list are both old (1929’s “Hallelujah!â€) and new (the current “Dreamgirlsâ€). There are foreign films (“City of God,†“Tsotsiâ€) and documentaries (“Hoop Dreams,†“When We Were Kingsâ€). Naturally there are examples of the ’70s “blaxploitation†film (“Sweet Sweetback…,†“Black Caesar,†“Shaftâ€). There’s a mix of drama, comedy and musicals.
Seven films starring Sidney Poitier made the list, as did three each from directors Michael Schultz (whose “Cooley High†came in at No. 8) and John Singleton (“Boyz N the Hoodâ€).
Among directors Spike Lee leads the pack with six films on the list, including “Do the Right Thing,†which placed No. 1.
“My main goal has been to expose people to the long history of black cinema,†Edwards said. “And I wanted to shake up Black History Month, get some new names out there. Growing up black you hear the same names over and over: Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King, George Washington Carver. What’s wrong with celebrating Gordon Parks and Spike Lee, too?â€
The project has been germinating for about five years, Edwards said.
“It started out unscientifically. I’d talk to friends and family, and the discussion would always return to certain scenes and movies. People would talk about the first movie they saw at a drive-in.â€
On movie junkets around the country Edwards would ask African-American actors and directors he was interviewing to offer their own ideas about what films should be on the list. Their comments ended up in the documentary.
“Doing interviews with celebrities is like factory work because they’re saying the same thing over and over again to hundreds of journalists,†Edwards said. “But when I asked about their favorite black movies, they lit up. Their posture changed, they smiled, they got energized. They were really eager to discuss this.
“Surprisingly, there weren’t that many duplications. It was fun to see the generational response. The oldest person I talked to was Danny Glover, who has a totally different perspective from Jamie Foxx or Nick Cannon. But although you had these different ages, the reasons people like certain movies are the same. It has to do with seeing a person like yourself on the screen and sharing a magical experience.â€
The film mentioned most often was probably “Cooley High,†a 1975 film depicting high school life that preceded “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.†Lee was the director most often mentioned; Poitier the most-mentioned actor.
Compiling the actual list was difficult, Edwards said. He focused on films that deal primarily with the black experience.
“The definition gets tricky. You could argue that ‘Enter the Dragon’ or Pacino’s ‘Scarface’ have had immense influence on black culture. But they’re not really about the black experience.â€
The research opened his eyes to gaps in his film knowledge, Edwards said. “I’d never been aware of ‘Nothing But a Man,’ a terrific mid-’60s film with Ivan Dixon and Abbey Lincoln. Or ‘The Green Pastures,’ an all-black film that tells stories from the Bible.â€
Edwards knows his choices will trigger debates and says that’s part of the fun.
“I know there are some omissions that will make people angry. Like ‘The Wiz.’ Lots of people love it, but I don’t. I could never get over the fact that Diana Ross was 40 years old and playing Dorothy.â€
Working with Matthew Hensley, a colleague from WDAF, Edwards has been editing the documentary, weaving together interviews with celebrities — Lee, Denzel Washington, Eddie Murphy, Will Smith, Dwayne “The Rock†Johnson and many others — and film clips from the movies they’re talking about.
One of the sadder aspects of his research, Edwards said, was the realization that much black film history has been lost.
“Even films by Oscar Micheaux†— the prolific black director of the ’30s and ’40s — “are extremely hard to find. Lots of those early black films, especially from the silent era, were dumped after they finished their runs at theaters and now exist in title only. Sometimes there aren’t even any stills. You might find a poster, but finding a film itself can be impossible. Even stuff from the ’40s through the early ’60s is hard to find.â€

dime on the vine
To celebrate Black History Month the Gem Theater is offering the “Dime on the Vine†series of African-American movies. Admission is just 10 cents.
In programming the series, Shawn Edwards said he looked for films that “were important but hadn’t been seen a million times on TV. Part of what I wanted to do was introduce audiences to titles they’d never seen.â€
