Something I've been thinking about quite a bit lately.
I never bothered to play guitar much or keyboard, but recently started jamming with a group of experienced musicians. Left with the option of learning bass guitar parts or picking up a hand drum and give em a beat, I ended up choosing the drum.
Something I wasn't expecting to come from that was disipline to sit and play an instrument. My guitar and keyboard playing is better than ever, but the instrument I've found comfort with and have always heard in my head would have to be the drums. Recently got my first set and have been picking them up pretty quick (because of willingness to practice mostly).
Point being Necia always says be the change you want to see. I've always wanted to see more bands and have become willing to practice my ass off to see it happen.
Anyone else ever think about that....production vs productions

The drum's a dope instrument.
I've been playing for about 15 years now.
I think to be where I'd like to be as a producer it will incorporate a mixture of both sampling and composition.
Composition is much freer in form so I feel you...

I definitely feel you on playing the live instruments. I would love to play the drums, but there are several things preventing that. I'm teaching myself how to get down on the keys right now. I can see a serious shift in my production style (that I'm still in the middle of). It won't be heard for a little minute, because I haven't let any new music out in a minute...
Aside from learning the piano, I would love to play the drums. So maybe this summer I'll save up for an electric drum set instead of an MPC...That way I won't drive my fam crazy.

I was a little excited when I did that post. I've had my kit since friday and can't seem to play less than an hour at a time. The coordination is coming pretty quick and my timing is actually pretty good. I know I haven't been posting much new stuff lately, but have been more active than ever.
Do you still have a kit Reach?
Joker it's likely you would be able to jam, I have to ask since it's never at my house. It's mostly classic rock we play hence the drums for me, I saw the chords for one of the songs they were playing and it had 14 chords in it. I know it hasn't hurt me a bit hanging out with them.
You could come over sometime as long as it's not too late and it's a day my son isn't over which leaves tuesday and thursdays (also jam nights). As for showing someone something on drums I doubt I'm very qualified as of yet. I've gotten comfortable with a straight 4/4 beat and can do basic variations of that like 1/8th notes on the high hats and kick, but I'm still pretty far away from wipe out

I actually never had a set.
I did own a snare drum back when I was doing the drill team thing, but that's been ages...

I've been learning the shit out of the guitar lately.
Let's just say instruments are awesome.
After I am fluent in guitar, I will learn bass just because I will already be somewhat familiar with the structure of it.
Then piano. Then drums if piano doesn't take a good 12 years.
Word to being able to play music. It sheds a lot of new light on beat making, and song producing.

That was the only instrument I ever took in school, snare and xylaphone. It helps bigtime to be solid on a snare, but it was humbling the first day I had the drum set to find how much corrdination it takes. Luckily the less thought involved the better....probably why I'm learning pretty quick (at least it seems that way).

My guitar playing got sidetracked somewhere along the point of sliding chords. I thought some of the movements from chord to chord were too hard so just started playing the power chords and barre chords that slide the whole scale.
If you are playing guitar halfway decent bass will be a piece of cake. The main thing for bass is timing and somehow I think you probably have that. Slap bass is another story.
Something hanging out with experienced musicians has taught me is they got to the point they are at by playing and by getting solid on one instrument first. That's something I've always lost track of myself and have tried to play a little of everything rather than a lot of one thing. It makes a huge difference and helps with something I struggle with and that would be focus.
