Excuse Me Miss…
On November 7, 2006, four ladies stepped into the spotlight to showcase their skills on stage. No, there wasn’t any nose powdering, primping, or even eyelash batting involved. In fact, the only thing in their collective purses was a set of needles and a selection of their most treasured vinyl. That night—the second annual “She’s My DJ†all-female hip-hop scratch and mix battle—all that mattered was beat-juggling, scratching, style, and stage presence. Hosted by The Bridge’s Ralph McDaniels, the event gathered a diverse crowd of hip-hop heads at NYC’s performance space S.O.B.’s. The brainchild of femmixx.com’s Tachelle Wilkes and Mocha Works’ Dannielle Brantley, “She’s My DJ†pits female DJs against each other for an assortment of cash and equipment prizes, but most of all, for bragging rights. “I personally love the fact that I get the chance to put these ladies on stage,†says Brantley. “Tachelle's passion is bringing recognition to females in this industry that don't just perform, but contribute on the production end, making the music, not just dancing to it. She's My DJ! is a blessing to both of us.†The gang of girls faced off in front of a panel of judges that included the legendary Jazzy Joyce and duo, The Wonder Twins, among others. DJ Scratch blessed the audience in support of burgeoning turntablists as well.
1st Place
DJ Sparkles
2nd Place
DJ Chela
While some returned for another crack at the coveted title (third prize winner DJ Chela from North Carolina and first prize winner DJ Sparkle(s) from Philly), other new comers tossed their names in the hat for the first time (DJ Dapper Don and Mo Love, both from Queens). Both new competitors put their best foot forward, but, in the end, it was the two returning ladies that were the true contenders. DJ Chela took the stage with twice the power of last year’s performance, combining deft beat juggling and turntable gymnastics that included sliding the fader with her nose and chest and scratching blindfolded. Yet, DJ Sparkle(s) still rose to the top and brought the crown back to Illadelph with her fearless and bold scratches, near effortless juggling, and clever beat combos like Lil Jon and the “What’s Happenin’†theme song. Close call…looks like a rematch in the works for 2007.
