- Dec 13, 2006 05:02am by DR.T - nuts .. haha Location: KCMO
I'm relatively new to the hip hop scene and (I know some of you know this) but I produce music. And I'm kinda interested to know what some of you other artists think of my stuff. I know it's petty self promotion but hey, I don't have really any other means of getting the word out... So could y'all let me know... it's on my myspace...

I like your musical ideas.
My only suggestion would be to be careful with your sample-phrasing. I've noticed that the sounds themselves are often out in front of the drums time-wise.
Keep grinding...
You're on your way.

Yo I appreciate that. Thats one thing people have been telling me for a while, about my drums... I'm still working on it though.
The encouragement helps. Thanx

Mmmhhmmm.
yeah I think I'm starting to do that a little better now in my newer joints... A lot of my older beats are on the Unreal Sounds page. Those are most DEFINITELY rough. But the ones on My page are more current.
Yo any tips for clearing up those samples though?

I myself dont sample, so unfortunately i cant advise on that one.
Any one else???
oh and it's not that i dont want to sample, i just want to be comfy with things completely before i start that phase of making beats.

Ok....I finally got to listen, and where I do agree with the need for sample polishing, I AM diggin the oddness, or uniqueness I should say, But if you love hip hop like Im sure you do, your just getting started, so your only bound to get better, Hell, Im far from proficient at my craft, but I look at it like my personal being , Im constantly growing and learning as a person, and so should my art, just listen to advice and read up on the subject too, but most of all HAVE FUN !!!!
Hip Hop is fun.
Fun Hop.

ummmmm.........haha. Did I mention, Im retarded ?

I like what I heard and the drums in the mix a lot of time would really depend on the emcee. Sometimes it doesn't sound right to mix the drums way louder than everything and sometimes it does.
Filters work good to clean up the sound, but aren't always needed.
Balance is something I'm not good at, all or nothing and most of this stuff is a track by track basis.
Good stuff if you ask me, the one area I noticed on what I was able to check (myspace during the middle of the day sucks) was the verse parts might be a hair busy which is probably the samples being to upfront that everyone else mentioned.
- Dec 14, 2006 09:38pm by DR.T - nuts .. haha Location: KCMO
Yeah for a while there I did nothing but use compressors on my drums, making them have more a "bamf" quality to them. I think if I did that.... that might clear up the problems I've been having with my samples.
So I guess I should lower sample volume and not use the compressor so much. Ya think this'll help?

compression helps mixes from getting mushy when used right, when used wrong it can turn a mix into mush. if am i compressing a drum track with a threshold of -20 then everything over -20 is going to get compressed, that would typically mash things down way too much for a drum track.
also the ratio is the amount of compression to the original.
a lot of things usually do better with compression like drums, bass, guitars, hip hop vocals

One of my philosophies is to get the best sound by doing as little as possible to the mechanics. I know it sounds like a bum thing to do but...
A wise man once told me, "The best way to complicity is threw simplicity"
But that doesn't men I'm not willing to go crazy with the beats.

Whats cool about having never used any effects before is..... IM ABOUT TO.
I really wanna do something spacially(sp) large, something with room and depth, My goal is to eventually do the Hip Hop equivelent of Pink Floyds "Dark Side of The moon"
and..............
I also want to do an instrumental Hip Hop Collaboration with most of the Producers on here.
There I said it.

yeah, be real careful about compression, it can take away all of the depth on a track when used improperly. you can use it to put a real thwack on some drums though.
experiment with it.
I usually go crazy with the effects on my tracks, though it might not seem like it. Subtlety is my thing. I can't give up too much on the hammer on the intra-net haha

I wanna do a collaboration album, an instrumental album of epic proportions, including most of the producers on here, and yea I mean you too, we have to come up with a concept first though, vocal samples would be used also, IE movie samples , tv, and the likes.
We will re visit this idea, I am going to go have a brewskie and relax, I suggest everyone go do what ever thier equivalent of a Brewskie is.
you can NEVER go a day without relaxin, its a must.

these aren't bad at all T...I'm listening from an MC standpoint, I don't have the producer's ear 🙂

So far the only thing up we got as far as the project is concerned is "The Bounce Back". And thats up on my myspace page. That track (when it's finished) is supposed to have "Sav" on it too (The other half of Unreal Sounds).
