Mary J. Blige went nuts... 9 Billboard awards in one year?
  3. Dec 7, 2006 08:20am by sixer
Nickelback makes me hate Canada. Nelly Furtado redeems it.
  4. Dec 7, 2006 08:22am by sixer
And doesn't it seem a bit lazy of them to just award a few artists a gaggle of awards?

wow that's crazy. Mary J is the female version of KC from Jodeci to me. she's always a bit off key and she sounds like she's screaming rather than singing. but people love her for it.

[quote:7111236001="NRG"] reach sorry, I can't agree with your statement just on the musicality along[/quote:7111236001] Blige typifies exactly what was unique about Aretha Franklin. Franklin was a special musical talent, but Franklin's genius was always her ability to tap her listenership with the passion and conviction in her songs. She represented women in a way that still resonates today. Blige does this better than likely any R&B artist, not surnamed Vandross or Houston, has over the last 20 years. That's pretty elite company. Aretha, Chaka, Patti, Whitney, Mary (as female vocalists go)... On a good day I might add Janet's name into that list. I won't argue that she's a dynamic vocal performer. She isn't, but she more than makes up for that fact with an impeccable catalog. One that represents an entire generation of young Black women. No female vocalist, currently, speaks to their experiences relative to love and life more than Blige. [quote:7111236001]but come to think of it you probably right cuz technology has fu*ked it all up to the point where you don't have to be able to sing, if you look the part ( or hire a image consultant to create yourself anew)[/quote:7111236001] Technology cannot buy the ability to identify with your listenership. As for earning coin on one's image? That isn't unique to just today's music business. It's been that way since Franklin's day. Blige's career runs a close parallel with Franklin's. She's both commercially viable and critically lauded. Added in to the fact that she's a cultural icon and has been a constant in an ever-changing recording industry. That longevity is difficult to come by. [quote:7111236001]mary J / aretha not in the same strata phere please forgive my rant they just come over me and are out before I can stop them[/quote:7111236001] I respect your opinion. I would ask you though what female vocalist, not named Whitney Houston, has had a bigger impact on the genre as a whole over the last 20 years? She, very early in her career, became the standard for female vocalists in the R&B genre. While 9 Billboard Awards might seem a bit superfluous to some there was simply no bigger artist in the genre over the last year. Blige is simply...The Jay-Z of the R&B genre. Wait... I'm underselling her. She's established herself as one of the best artists to ever commit R&B/Soul vocals to tape.

she isn't 'dynamic' enough as a vocalist to sing in the shower as far as i'm concerned. that's what's most important to me. she's had dope songs written as far as being conceptual for her that have mass appeal among females worldwide yes. she still can't blow ina windstorm.

That can't be argued. Blige is an average vocalist at best. Her voice is distinctive though. Those smoky vocals are easily distinguished. The greats weren't always synonymous with the greatest talent. Contrary to popular belief there were stronger vocalists than Vandross, but there simply is no way to argue with his prowess as a balladeer and the impact of his love songs. Ketara Wyatt is one of the most gifted vocalists of the past 10 years, but that didn't stop her from dropping a stink nugget on her debut. I'm a student of the R&B vocal, but I need a bit more than a great voice.

yeah Keke Wyatt did murder Avant on that one track (can't think of the name of it), and then you never heard from her again. i'm simply arguing that Mary can't sing, can't argue w/ the fact that she's sold millions of copies. or that millions of pre-pubescent girls everywhere no every word to 'Be Without You'. that reminds me i went to a talent show on base and an 11 year old girl sang, well tried to sing, 'Cater to You'. might've been the funniest thing i've seen ever. i'ma huge r&b critic though, monstrous.

Her impact on Black women as a whole (which I think leans more in the direction of twenty and thirtysomethings) is very well stated. Her influence over newer artists is quite impressive as well. Keyshia Cole has Mary written all over her. Keys is obviously influenced by Blige as well. [quote:787a7b7abd]i'ma huge r&b critic though, monstrous.[/quote:787a7b7abd] As am I. The genre's going through a really bad phase right now. Musiq's back though so...I'm feeling a little better.

I'll have to respectfully disagree. Blige's label couldn't possibly have connected her with the real experiences of African-American women. Her life story and exposure of it did. You can't buy into that. They can commandeer the radio waves, they can balloon marketing budgets to 7-figures, but they cannot connect artists with real people and experiences. Labels buy into to trends and flighty audiences. This is why most aren't able to sustain long-term success. Representing an entire generation of women can't be bought. Especially not by mostly White execs who have no Earthly idea as to how to do so. I can see where you're coming from, but this simply doesn't apply to Blige. She's not the product of over-inflated marketing budgets. She's not the product of payola. Case in point? Christina Milian. Formerly signed to Island Def Jam. Alternately called a "super label". She failed to Gold-certify her album with some of the most highly-touted producers in the business, with an all-star group of collaborators and with Jay-Z executive producing her project. Let alone the fact that R&B-maven Antonio "LA" Reid was behind it all. He's had a hand in at least a half dozen multi-platinum artists over the years (Usher, TLC, Ciara). And she's easily one of the most physically alluring artists in all of R&B. Despite all of that "So Amazin'", her latest effort, was a stink nugget. The album tanked commercially. She's sold less than 200,000 copies of that album despite everything the MACHINE threw behind her. Blige is NOT a product of the MACHINE. You can't engineer 15-year success in the music business.

Musiq....word it's about time. i haven't checked for him since 'ijustwannalisten' i used to have all the girlies weak when i'd sing 'Love', that's my joint. Keyshia Coles is a screamer too. although her rolls are cleaner than Mary's most of the time. but her voice doesn't have half the mileage or abuse either. (i.e. drugs and alcohol.)
