you run into any cats with their speakers in the front grill? I thought that was kind of fresh when I first heard about it.

I understand what it is to be "hyphy". But how is this a movement? I thought it was just dudes drinking 40s and whylin out. I'm curious about what's changing culturally here. Is it the innovation in grills, jewelry and whips? Break it down for me.

Grills and jewelry are hardly innovative (not sure what a whip is and guessing that it's probably best....ignorance is bliss you know).

i'd say it's mostly an attitude, style of dance, and style in general... i think "movement" is an extreme word even though that seems to be the easiest thing to say.... it's not like all these hyphed out cats are actually changing the world or anything. but it's just being a little goofier than most of the shit out right now.

This thread just isn't the first place of heard of hyphy being referred to as a movement. So I was wondering if there was anything I was missing. You never know where cultural revolutions might occur, so I wanted to check with the experts before I made any judgements.

yeah i've heard it a bunch of times too. i mean, i guess it's a movement, just probably not a very important one.

As far as I can tell it's a culture into the whole underground movement. Only not the boring, no chics, intelligent rapper culture of the 90's. I've heard alot of the underground (or maybe just some, I don't know how much there is?), it's much simpler with more danceable beats. People are actually playin the joints in clubs and folks are dancin all around.

it appears that animated gifs are a big part of the culture, heh.

Actually it's simple...
Hyphy=Crunk
The whole movement thing is because currently it's regional, trying to go nation/worldwide.

now i aint from the bay so i cant speak on when hyphy started, but crunk has been apart of soutern culture before lil john, or any of them ATL folks. as a Memphian we called that buck music, back in 91,92. and made public by Three Six with Tear da CLub Up.
but i love the hyphy stuff but i wouldnt compare it to crunk/buck, its less agressive alot more fun.
