"Charm" is Kanye-esque, but it isn't the actual drum patterns (those are more Just Blaze-esque)... It's the kit itself. And the sample. Sounds a lot like "We Don't Care". "Cafe Surreal" is dope... Swain is nice with it. Thanks for the referral Lou.

NOTICE: I REALIZE THIS IS SOLELY MY OPINION AND NOT ABSOLUTE FACT i tried to hold back, but i have to say it, I dont get why people are interested in all these groups that sound like lesser versions of other groups. I'm sure he has great abilities and is capable of great things, but it seems to be the biggest reason why acts like this one get shine is because of a financially-backed, well organized marketing and promotion campaign. To their credit, yes they get on okayplayer "Now hear this" (payment?) and such, but it doesnt help the public to act like this is groundbreaking or the next big thing. I applaude and recognize that this is a business and i understand promotion ans such, but i also think we should examine what we are being fed as "amazing" whether it is on an indie-like website or a corporate commercial. BUt if people dig it, wonderful, keep digging it. I congratulate him on his success and hope he continues to stay focused and create waves of change. If you dont care at all about my opnion... stop reading here. A few Groups i think ARE worth heralding for innovation: [b:756f79cca7]Sa-Ra[/b:756f79cca7] The Roots Timbaland [b:756f79cca7]Reggie B[/b:756f79cca7] [b:756f79cca7]4 hero[/b:756f79cca7] Ty Bilal Salaam Andre 3000 honestly i feel like in a year, many of the groups or acts we like will not be able to hold a torch to some of the new music that will be coming out. Between "Everybody" by bentley F. (not including the F Bentley lyrics) and "Hollywood Divorce" by outkast.. the quality gaps already being ripped wider.

Maybe I'm with Miles on this. The beats are pretty tight. I don't really get anything from Danny's lyrics. Seems like another cocky rapper that doesn't really got shit to say if it's not about how much you should ride his dick.

wowzerz..... 😯 Thats cool, opinions are what have made this board what it is.... @ the same time I dont recall anyone blowing him up like he was the next big thing, I, in my opinion, like what I heard,I wanted to see if anyone was up on him...dont really see a need to overanaylze sumthing that simple..

i wasnt referring to you lou, just commenting on a trend i see that is kind of backwards. It goes like this... "these guys are real hiphop... they are like the golden era of hiphop.. dope!!" but that doesnt make it dope. it kind of makes it a reproduction. I just think there shoudl be more dicussion in general about artists regarding their music, not just position or stance. nothing against anyone, it's just an observation that seems taboo to discuss.

I feel where you coming from, & in some instances it feels like its hard for artist these days to balance both. You'll get ripped up & down for having too much subject matter & not enough quality music or vise versa. For me, (& think we all have artist we like who we give benefit of the doubt to) I've always checked for the sound 1st. Lyrically I dont really check for subject matter(anymore, cuz it seems everyone talks about the same thing these days) as opposed to being witty & clever in what your talking about. Theres a million different ways to say one thing, instead of finding the 1st or 2nd best way, choose the 45,905 way, you know? Perhaps critism & wanting to be accepted is not allowing emcee's/producers to elevate their music to a point it should be.... ??

[quote:e2e0223406]Perhaps critism & wanting to be accepted is not allowing emcee's/producers to elevate their music to a point it should be....[/quote:e2e0223406] Right the fuck on. I think most artists, in all genres and mediums, are scared to experiment, or be too genuinely themselves, specifically because of this reason. The gap between success and failure is too broad in these fields. Most people probably feel that it's hard enough to get on once, if you do get on in any way, and then drop something people aren't feeling, that's it. You're done. People feel they can't afford to lose, hence [quote:e2e0223406]everyone talks about the same thing these days[/quote:e2e0223406]. If there's a winning formula, 9 out of ten are going with that.

with that being said..perhaps theres alot of pressure sitting on KC shoulders, to either produce sumthing extremley ground-breaking or sumthin safe that the masses would be willing to gravitate to.I know 1st hand there is soooooo much creativity in the city but even those who escape "the box" have a cloud hovering over them. Im all about creating sumthin that will give you a..hmmm...."welcomed discomfort" but is there enough of us willing to put that foot out there?

well stated lou. I agree 100%, and honestly, I think thats why I'm really not impressed. There are 10 people in this city as good as that dude. Its really a matter of creating a crispy cd that is well-mixed and well-produced (not just beat-wise) to put the rep in place. That is something we should all be working on constantly. I'm doing what i can toward that means. I encourage everyone else to do the same. The respect and goodies wont come til we elevate as individuals much higher than all those artists who know people or have large budgets. BUT, as we are all underated, we have the opportunity to grow out of the spotlight, only to return changed and ready. and to respond to both of your previous comments... i can tell that both of you know the answer to whether you should be 100% yourself or not. That's your conscious speaking. I already see both of your unique abilities and personalities, I'd suggest being 100% that. Why wait til you're famous? (when its seen as acceptable)

[quote:979f3165cc="MILES"] I dont get why people are interested in all these groups that sound like lesser versions of other groups. To their credit, yes they get on okayplayer "Now hear this" (payment?) and such, but it doesnt help the public to act like this is groundbreaking or the next big thing.[/quote:979f3165cc] Swain has to be careful that he earns his keep on his own merit and not on the back of what another successful has done before him. That requires only a bit more of himself and less linkage to such artists. That's why I was amazed that he had an album called "The College Kicked-Out". You can't escape the Kanye comparisons when you title albums in such a way. He's making it hard for people to recognize his own artistic merit. Swain has plenty artistic merit of his own though. He might duplicate Kanye's formula (a tad), but it simply wouldn't work if he didn't have the talent to go with it. [quote:979f3165cc]A few Groups i think ARE worth heralding for innovation: [b:979f3165cc]Sa-Ra[/b:979f3165cc] The Roots Timbaland [b:979f3165cc]Reggie B[/b:979f3165cc] [b:979f3165cc]4 hero[/b:979f3165cc] Ty Bilal Salaam Andre 3000[/quote:979f3165cc] I think several other artists could be added to this list. Ultimately I think it's all subjective. I can say for certain that Sa-Ra's ideas aren't exactly groundbreaking. I think for the most part that they're re-exploring 80's R&B tinged with Jazz and perhaps a bit of Soul...packaged in a Rap context. I've had ideas of bringing the synthetic sounds of yesteryear back myself. And that was 3-4 years ago. Ideas alone don't make for good music. Cause while I've had those ideas I can't say that I've done anything remotely as dope as they have. Ultimately it's creative ideas and the execution of them that makes for good music. That's why I think Swain is drawing these comparisons. He might be repackaging Kanye's ideas, but if he wasn't good enough to pull them off no one would care. I say that to say this... He has artistic merit of his own. I can't discount him entirely. I've listened to his music enough to know that dude can spit. And that he writes great songs (part of what makes Kanye so valuable). I think everyone's a product of their influences to some degree. How much is a different story altogether. [quote:979f3165cc]honestly i feel like in a year, many of the groups or acts we like will not be able to hold a torch to some of the new music that will be coming out.[/quote:979f3165cc] I think it's quite a bit grayer than that... Take Kanye for instance... The sped-up sampling of Soul records had been done 10 years prior by another producer altogether, but that doesn't change the fact that he's considered to be one of the very best Rap producers of the last 2 decades. Should we ignore his own artistic merit because we've heard a version of it before? Rap is the reinterpretation of yesteryear's music with a slight twist. I think any artform that incorporates the interpolation of other genres of music should be a bit more relaxed about how influential artists of years past are on artists of today. If dude had no talent at all I could understand any criticism that he may encounter, but again I've heard enough from Swain to know that he can easily stand on his own merit.

I'm not sure how their musical process is so unique that it couldn't be replicated, but that's just me. Ultimately for me I like the context of their music. How they've compiled their musical influences and repackaged them. Again, I can't say that what they are doing is groundbreaking, but then again that doesn't much matter to me. I'm a fan all the same. And largely because of what I'd heard from you and from Skeme. Good looks on the referral by the way...

"There's just as much parody in the underground as there is in the mainstream " absolutely. But it always depends on what artist you are talking about.
