Topic: the non-hip-hop thread.

forgive me if one of these already exists, but what have you been listening to outside the realms of hip-hop, etc.? what do you like that's pretty much completely different from hip-hop?
i don't normally listen to irish music, but i've had the Pogues song "Fairytale of New York" in my head all week. it's a christmas song, and i've been listening to it in the middle of summer, i don't know why.
i've also been listening to the Heptones a lot. particularly the song "I Shall Be Released"
i've also been in the mood to listen to metal for the past few months, but i don't even really know where to start when it comes to metal because there's so many different kinds.... i don't like nu-metal, or slow sludge stoner metal... i prefer old metallica and things that are more brutal and fast and precise... and of course, evil.
i was on an oi! kick for a while too. i don't tend to like new oi!, but i was listening to quite a bit of cocksparrer, angelic upstarts, and cockney rejects for a while. there's a few too many republican skinheads for me to get too into that scene though.
oh, and Mazzy Star. if you don't listen to them, you probably need to.

I wholeheartedly concur on Mazzy star, the female is Hope Sandoval I believe, please feel free to correct me if I am wrong, her voice is heavenly !!!!! whatever her name.
Metalica, hands down the pinicle of talent as far as the metal genre goes, followed, IMHO by Pantera and Antrax.
I should totally post the long haired Axle Rose phase pic of me (circa 1990, Jesus.

Demencha, you are so fired.
haha I'm totally kidding. Here, I'll share something embarrasing:
Uh, for some reason really hot fucking weather makes me crave bluegrass. I heard this group called the Outlaw Family Band at the Record Bar, they're from Chicago and I picked up their album "Lyceum." It speaks to my Colorado roots.
Good thread idea, phism.

I've been feeling the fuck out of Tool's Aenima album. I didn't really catch it when it dropped, and am not really that into hard core, metal, industial, whatever. I'm blown away though, the lyrics are incredible, and the complexity of their music reminds me of classic Metallica.

Afrobeat, roots reggae and all the crazy electro coming out of Paris right now.
I like a lot of bluegrass to. Especially the really old accapella stuff that is in O' Brother Where Art Thou. Thats some deeeeep stuff.

aside from hip hop? ...
jazz, records to be sampled, mixes of what i did the night before, npr.
- Aug 3, 2006 04:40pm by Lucidialect
Miles, do you record any of your mix sessions? I remember my girl had asked you about getting a mix before she left for the Peace Corp. She's already in Costa Rica, but if you had a session or two that wouldn't be too much trouble to burn off, she would be absolutely ecstatic. She's isolated in the moutains and needs some good funk, soul, hiphop, whatever, she's always loved your mixes. Let me know, if it's a problem don't sweat it...

Yeah, I figured. You just writing 'mixes' made me remember. I'll go ahead and download those for her. I've never downloaded a podcast before, but it can't be very difficult. Thanks for the links Miles...
